Village Roadshow Television has acquired the rights to Lana Harper’s novel “Payback’s a Witch” with the intention of developing it onto a TV series, Variety has learned exclusively.
The book is the first installment in Harper’s “Witches of Thistle Grove” novel series, with the planned show set to take that name as well.
Per the official logline, “Witches of Thistle Grove” is “a show about Emmy Harlow, a young woman with big dreams who abandoned her charming but podunk hometown to prove herself in the big city. When she’s suddenly called home nine years later to fulfill a family obligation — which, okay, happens to be arbitrating a centuries-old gauntlet — she’s forced to confront family rifts, broken friendships, and Gareth Blackmoore — a detestable but Hot Af ex who broke her heart and, it turns out, also screwed her friends: Her childhood bestie Linden Thorn, and the sexy,...

At the 61st Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Jason Priestley looked back at the success of ’90s teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and explained why the 2019 reboot “BH90210” got canceled by Fox after one season.
“BH90210” was described by Variety as a “soapy parody” that gave “the actors behind our favorite characters the space to play versions of themselves while poking fun at the public personas, rabid fans and roles that made them famous.” It saw original series cast members Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. But it was a high stakes gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, said the North Vancouver native.

Exclusive: HBO Max has rounded out its cast of series regulars for comedy pilot Wild Life, which is fronted by Izabella Alvarez in the role of Ciara.
The cast includes Nadine Velazquez (Queens), Annie Funke (The Offer), Nabeel Muscatwalla (Good Trouble), Ava Lalezardeh (The Pursuit), Brielle Barbusca (Young Sheldon), Cyrus Arnold (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Jessi Case (Mother’s Day), Chrystal Campbell, and Beau Minnier.
From writers and executive producers Jason Ubaldi, Chris Peterson, and Bryan Moore, Wild Life follows a diverse group of high school teens who are struggling with personal and social issues who spend their school hours working at the local animal rescue as part of an alternative educational program.
While comedy comes from their quirky offbeat personalities and the unique setting of “high school at the animal rescue,” the series also will have heart as working with animals helps them deal with their personal issues with friends and at home.

BH90210's cancellation divided TV Fanatic readers when it was announced a few months ago.
Some liked the meta aspect of it all, and others just wanted to check back in with the characters they fell in love with in the first place.
Despite strong buzz, Fox decided against bringing it back for a second season, and now the network is opening up about the controversial decision.
Fox Entertainment Chief Michael Thorn chatted with Deadline about the scenario, admitting that the meta revival was a "ballsy" direction for the creative forces to take the series.
However, he went on to say that it was "brave for the actors" to pull off such a high-concept series and complimented them on a "terrific job."
Thorn followed that up by stating that the idea for the series was to do it as an event. In TV terms, events are one-and-done but have the...

Fox entertainment chief Michael Thorn lauded the BH90210 quasi-revival as “ballsy” but explained why the network decided against bringing back the series for a second run.
The show, which featured the majority of the original cast, minus Luke Perry, was originally billed as a six-episode run and Thorn, who is president of entertainment at Fox told Deadline that the network wanted to “let it be”.
“I thought it was really brave for the actors. It was really ballsy,” he said. “To pull something off like that is such a high degree of difficulty and I think they did a terrific job but even six [episodes] was really challenging. The idea was to do it as a big event and it did really well for us, it did well in the ratings and was very satisfying for the fans and then let it be what it was, not turning it into something...

There will be no more BH90210 on Fox as the network has opted not to order another installment.
BH90210 , featuring most of the original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210, had been billed as a six-episode comedy event series. Yet, in success, the expectation was that it would go to multiple seasons.
“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country,” Fox said in a statement. “Profound thanks to and respect for Brian, Gabrielle, Ian, Jason, Jennie, Shannen and Tori, who, along with the entire crew and everyone at Fox and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”
There was a lot of anticipation for BH90210, whose trailer amassed huge viewership in May. The premiere on Fox also drew strong ratings, but the numbers quickly...

“Beverly Hills, 90210” meta-revival series “BH90210” will not return for another season, Fox announced on Thursday.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the finale of “BH90210”)
Fox’s “BH90210,” ended Wednesday, revealing that the show’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot got picked up to series — meaning that in-universe fans of Donna (Tori Spelling), David (Brian Austin Green), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Brenda (Shannen Doherty), Brandon (Jason Priestley), Steve (Ian Ziering) and Andrea (Gabrielle Carteris) will find out what the characters have been up to since the drama ended almost 20 years ago.
But in real life, fans of the meta-revival itself will have to wait to see if Fox orders a second season of “BH90210,” so they can find out what happens next with the “heightened” versions of Spelling, Green, Garth, Doherty, Priestley, Ziering and Carteris and their “90210” characters, who would live on via the reboot inside the show.

Ahead of its premiere this evening, the BH90210 cast and executives were on hand during Fox’s presentation at the TCA summer press tour. On stage were executive producers Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler as well as stars and EPSs Gabrielle Carteris, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling, and Ian Ziering.
While the show — which premieres tonight on Fox — is being pegged as an event series, the possibility for future seasons has not been ruled out.
“We would love to continue to work together,” said Spelling. “It’s been such an amazing experience. “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum Shannen Doherty “definitely” wasn’t on board for “BH90210,” Fox’s meta-revival of the series — and then Luke Perry, who played her on-screen love interest on the original show, died.

Fox released the opening credits sequence for its upcoming “BH90210” series on Tuesday, showing the cast dusting off their head turns 20 years later.
The clip is a more-or-less faithful re-creation of the original opening credits sequence from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” only this time with the added twist that all of the actors will be playing versions of themselves in the new series.
The six-episode series centers on the original cast — Gabrielle Carteris, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley and Tori Spelling — playing fictionalized versions of themselves “with a healthy dose of irreverence” as they try to get a revival of their old show off the ground.

Maybe it was only a matter of time.
Nostalgic content is having its moment, as programmers chase ratings and attempt to create conversations around their fare in new and relevant ways. Given the sheer number of reboots and revivals proliferating schedules, reinventing “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which was still averaging eight million viewers an episode when it went off the air following a 10-season run in 2000, seemed inevitable.
But how do you reinvent a series that ran for a decade and spawned a five-season reboot in 2008, while reuniting the original cast and telling a fresh and relevant story nearly 30 years following the original premiere?
“So much of what happens in the show is inspired by what was happening in the cast’s real lives,” says co-showrunner Mike Chessler. “They had all reconnected at a convention and some of them hadn’t seen each other for a long time. And the experience...

Vanessa Lachey has joined the cast of Fox’s “BH90210” event series in a recurring role.
Lachey will not be playing herself in the meta-revival, but will instead play Camille, wife to the show’s “heightened” version of Jason Priestley.
“BH90210” will see the return of original cast members Priestley, Brian Austin Green, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Tori Spelling to the franchise that launched their careers nearly 30 years ago. In a meta twist, the six-episode series centers on the original cast playing fictionalized versions of themselves — “with a healthy dose of irreverence” — as they try to get a revival of their old show off the ground.

There’s a new kid in town. Vanessa Lachey is set to recur on Fox’s summer drama series BH90210. The Top Chef Junior host and Dads alum is the second non-90210 actor to join the new show, following La La Anthony’s casting on Thursday.
BH90210 is described as a serialized drama with a dose of irreverence inspired by the real lives and relationships of Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, the septet — who will play heightened versions of themselves — reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running.
Lachey will play Camille, the high-powered publicist wife of Jason Priestley who is balancing her demanding career with the hopes of starting a family.

Just days after showcasing the cast at its annual Upfronts presentation, Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210 “revival” is going through a backstage shake-up.
Sources confirm for TVLine that Patrick Sean Smith has stepped away as showrunner for BH90210, which is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, August 7. In his place, Paul Sciarrotta (90210) has taken the reins, working alongside series creators/co-showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler.

There’s been a change at the top of Fox’s summer reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210. Paul Sciarrotta has been named as the new showrunner for BH90210, replacing Patrick Sean Smith, the network confirms. Series creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler serve as co-showrunners.
No reason for the change was cited, but two writers also have departed the six-episode series.
Sciarrotta, whose credits include Jane the Virgin, The Fosters and 90210, has an overall deal with BH90210 producer CBS Television Studios. A spokesman said Sciarrotta, who already had been working on the series, “is bringing a strong focus and vision for the show.”
Sciarrotta already has brought in some scribes he worked with on the CW’s recently wrapped Jane the Virgin. One script and several outlines for BH90210 have been written.

Patrick Sean Smith, the showrunner on Fox’s upcoming “Beverly Hills, 90210” meta-revival, has exited the series, TheWrap has learned.
Paul Sciarrotta, whose previous credits include “Jane the Virgin” and The CW’s last “90210” reboot series, will take over as showrunner of “BH90210.” Series creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler will now also serve as co-showrunners . Sciarrotta, who has an overall deal with CBS Television Studios, was previously a member of the show’s writing staff.
A number of writers departed the show alongside Smith, though according to an individual familiar with the matter, the writers’ room has since been “beefed up” and is back on track in the wake of the departures.

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith and several senior writers have quit the six-episode series, which is titled “BH90210.” The exact reason for the exodus is unclear. There is good news for fans of Beverly Hills, 90210.
Original Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty is set to join her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling – for BH90210, Fox’s highly anticipated new series airing this summer.
The news is also bittersweet, as her participation will highlight the glaring absence of their friend and castmate, Luke Perry.
It's also possible that tragic circumstances led to Doherty changing her mind about participation, as it's not difficult to imagine the group of friends found solace in each other during their time of grief.
Regardless, with the addition of Doherty, my interest has been piqued to the point BH90210 has become must-see television!

Fox has officially ordered a revival of Beverly Hills, 90210. Most of the original class — Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling (Rip Scott) — are returning for an event series that will last six episodes and will air this summer (Looks like Brenda will be spending the summer alone in Paris while Dylan and Kelly hook up on the beach again). I jest, because this isn’t just a “Brandon has to move back into his parent’s old house with Brenda and Steve to reenact his entire childhood because he is a broke widow” kind of revival. Variety reports that things are going to get weird and wonderful:
The actors will not be playing their characters from the show, but rather heightened versions of themselves. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and...

The original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 will reunite for a hyper-meta miniseries titled 90210 that will center around the actors trying to pull together a reboot of the original show. The six-episode series is set to air this summer on Fox.
Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Brian Austin Green will all play heightened versions of themselves in 90210. Picking up 19 years after the original series ended, the story lines in the show will be inspired by the performers’ real lives and relationships as they try to plan the revival.

Beverly Hills, 90210 is reuniting with its first love: Fox.
TVLine has learned that the much-ballyhooed quasi-reboot/revival of 90210 has landed at Fox, with the network ordering a six-episode “event series” starring original cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Fellow Og Peach Pit-ers Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty are not attached in an official capacity, although Spelling recently expressed confidence that Perry would appear as a guest star.

It’s official — Fox has closed a deal for the new series reuniting original Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Titled 90210, the show, from CBS TV Studios, has received a six-episode order to air this summer (watch a teaser above.)
Fox, which aired the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series, had emerged as the frontrunner for the new 90210, which was taken out in December. The broadcast network was described as being “the most passionate” about the project, a serialized drama – with a dose of irreverence — inspired by the sextet’s real lives and relationships, in which Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves.
“Beverly Hills, 90210 left an indelible impact on pop culture and an entire generation,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “Its powerful legacy is an important part of our network’s...

“Beverly Hills, 90210” is coming home. A six-episode revival series starring many of the original “90210” cast will air on Fox this summer, with a twist.
The new version, called “90210” will feature original castmembers Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.
Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow...

Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier played it coy but could not hide his enthusiasm at the prospect of having a new Beverly Hills’ 90210 series on the network.
“If 90210 was coming to market, I would very much love to see that Fox would be a highly considered home for that,” he told Deadline during TCA.
There is a such a series, featuring most of the original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210, which was taken t market in December. As I previously reported, Fox, which aired the 1990s staple, has been described as being “most passionate” about the project from CBS TV Studios, with ABC and CBS TV Studios siblings CBS and CBS All Access also said to be among the outlets bidding on the series. A deal is expected soon.

The new series featuring most of the original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 is getting closer to reality as discussions with potential networks are heating up. I hear Fox, which aired the 1990s staple, has been particularly passionate about the project from CBS TV Studios, with ABC and CBS TV Studios siblings CBS and CBS All Access also said to be among the outlets bidding on the series. I hear a deal is expected soon.
In a slew of TV interviews following her elimination from Fox’s The Masked Singer, 90210 alumna Tori Spelling revealed a lot of details about the scripted series, in which she is set to star alongside her former castmates Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris.
“It’s not technically a reboot, because I feel like everyone has seen the reboot. We don’t want to be the last ones like doing the reboot thing,...

Tori Spelling confirmed Friday what has been talked about for months: a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot is coming with most of the original cast.
“It’s confirmed. We’re doing a new 90210,” the actress said on “Access Live,” which you can watch above. “It is the Og crew back together.”
She explained that the reboot will shift between the scripted show and behind-the-scenes versions of the actors. “We’re playing heightened versions of ourselves,” she continued. “The fans will be pleasantly surprised, though, because we will intercut that with scenes from the show. It will be the whole ensemble cast playing a heightened version of themselves. Almost everybody.”
A reboot of the teen drama was first reported by TheWrap in December. Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris are presently attached.

Well, the gang will almost all be there. In a new interview, Beverly Hills, 90210 vet-turned-Masked Singer warbler Tori Spelling confirms that the “whole ensemble cast” is attached to the in-the-works quasi-reboot — with the notable exception of Shannen Doherty.
Speaking with Access Live, Spelling — who played Donna Martin in both the original Fox series and the subsequent CW revival — says of Doherty’s involvement: “There is no status right now but… we would love to have her.”
Spelling also noted that fellow vet Luke Perry, while not officially signed on due to his current commitment to The CW’s Riverdale, will...

It looks like our early Christmas present might not be exactly what we were expecting. On Dec. 20, news dropped that a "reboot" of the iconic Beverly Hills, 90210 was being pitched around to various networks. The project, which is reportedly in early development, was described as an "untraditional reboot," in the sense that the actors "are not reprising their original characters." Initially we wondered how the reboot would work with characters not being played by their original actors - but now we have an answer to all of that! According to TVLine, while the new series does feature some of the original cast, it isn't a reboot or a revival at all.
Before you decide you're not interested in anything but the return of the Peach Pit Posse, hear us out. TVLine reports that the scripted series is actually an "hour-long mockumentary-style dramedy" that's inspired by the '90s teen drama.

Contrary to previous reports, the Og cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 isn't working on a revival at all. The gang, along with writers Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, is actually shopping around an hour-long mockumentary-style dramedy loosely based on their lives, according to TV Line.

Recent rumors that a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot/revival is in-the-works have not only been greatly exaggerated — they’re flat-out wrong. While it’s true that a new series inspired by the seminal ’90s teen drama is currently being shopped around, it would not feature the return of Donna Martin, Kelly Taylor & Co.
According to sources, the untitled project is an hour-long mockumentary-style dramedy that would find former 90210 cast members Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris playing themselves — albeit in a somewhat heightened state. The potential series — which was first rumored last March...
