Popular animated series Rugrats is heading back to the big screen, this time in a film which will include a hybrid of live action and animation.

Rugrats was one of the most popular children’s shows of the 1990s. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, the series followed the midadventures of five infants – Tommy, Phil and Lil, Chuckie and Anjelica. It ran for nine seasons between 1991 and 2004.

The show became popular enough that in 1998 feature film The Rugrats Movie arrived in cinemas. This was followed in 2000 by Rugrats In Paris. In 2003, Rugrats Go Wild, which was a crossover with Klasky and Csupó’s other hit show The Wild Thornberrys, was released.

Spin-off series All Grown Up! ran for five seasons between 2003 and 2008. series of a CGI reboot of Rugrats was made for Paramount+ between 2021 and 2023, but it was removed from the streaming service in March this year.

A Rugrats live-action movie is officially in development. Rugrats was a Nickelodeon animated series that originally ran for nearly 2000 episodes across 1991 to 2003. The series featured a leading voice cast including Elizabeth Daily, Christine Cavanaugh, Nancy Cartwright, Kath Soucie, Melanie Chartoff, and Cheryl Chase. Rugrats was more recently rebooted into a 2021 computer animated series of the same name. Rugrats has also gotten feature-film treatment before, include the 1998 film The Rugrats Movie and the 2000 film Rugrats in Paris.

As per Deadline, a Rugrats live-action film is now in development.

Paramount+ has removed 10 kid-friendly series from its library, including a pair of streaming originals: The CG-animated Rugrats reboot and Big Nate — neither of which has been formally cancelled as of press time.

The revival of “Rugrats” has been renewed for Season 2 at Paramount Plus.

The second season will consist of 13 episodes. News of the renewal comes as eight new episodes of Season 1 are scheduled to drop on the streamer on Oct. 7. The new episodes also includes a half-hour Halloween special where Tommy needs his friends’ help to save Angelica after she turns into a werewolf at a scary Halloween party as their parents seem to disappear one by one.

“Kids series are a key driver of engagement for Paramount Plus,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer for Paramount Plus. “With the renewal of ‘Rugrats’ for a second season, we look forward to bringing even more adventures with Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica and the rest of the Rugrats for kids and families to enjoy.”

The opening credits of Paramount+’s reboot of beloved Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats are mighty familiar.

Composer Mark Mothersbaugh’s synthesizer chimes away as the action follows the titular infants having a particularly lively play day in a suburban living room. Tommy Pickles does a handstand. Phil and Lil DeVille chase each other around. Angelica gets covered in dust from a vacuum.

While at first glance the new intro seems identical to the iconic original, there are some key updates. Grandpa Lou is not asleep on a LA-z-Boy, but up and alert, practicing yoga. Chuckie Finster is riding around on a Roomba-style wireless cleaner rather than a traditional vacuum. And of course, the whole thing is animated in a much more modern CGI-style.

Actress Natalie Morales said her voice character Betty in the rebooted Paramount+ Rugrats series will be an openly gay woman.

Morales made the revelation in a statement to the A.V. Club. The character is mother to two children, Phil and Lil, and has been married to Howard in prior versions.

Morales said in her statement that she thinks “Anyone who watched the original show may have had an inkling Betty was a member of the alphabet mafia.”

She added, “Betty is a single mom with her own business who has twins and still has time to hang out with her friends and her community, and I think it’s just so great because examples of living your life happily and healthily as an out queer person is just such a beacon for young queer people who may not have examples of that.”

Paramount+ has set a Thursday, May 27 premiere date for the Nicktoon’s CG-animated revival. The date was confirmed in a sizzle reel for the recently rebranded streaming service (fka CBS All Access), which features new footage of Tommy Pickles and his menacing cousin Angelica.

They may be young, but the young animated characters who make up the Rugrats are not to be dismissed.

Nickelodeon stopped making original episodes of the iconic series in 2004, but will re-launch the program in 2021, reuniting many of the actors who gave the toddlers at the center of the series voice and adding a wide array of new actors to many of their parents. “It’s an enormous responsibility. It’s such a beloved franchise,” says Brian Robbins, president of ViacomCBS’ Nickelodeon, in an interview. “We have a lot of the original creative team back including the voice cast of all the babies. That’s exciting and that’s a giant stamp of approval.”

Nickelodeon cartoons “Dora the Explorer” and “The Fairly OddParents” are getting live-action series on Paramount+.

“Dora” will target kids aged 6-11 and their families, Nick said. The original “Dora the Explorer” cartoon launched in 2000 and wrapped in 2019, the same year the live-action “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” was released theatrically. That film, which starred Isabela Merced in the titular role, made about $120 million worldwide on a budget of $49 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

“The Fairly OddParents,” meanwhile, is one of Nick’s longest-running and most successful animated series.

The announcement was among the deluge of news shared on Wednesday during ViacomCBS’ streaming investor day. Brian Robbins, the president of kids and family entertainment at ViacomCBS, had the honor of sharing this one.
