She is the mother of presenter Mark Durden-Smith.

She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1994 Queen's Birthday Honors List for her services to broadcasting and the Holiday Care Service.

When she and son Mark Durden-Smith were teamed together on Family Special (2008), and had to opt for lifeline "Phone a Friend", host Chris Tarrant called author Frederick Forsyth. Forsyth instantly provided the correct answer and won the couple £20,000.

She is the elder sister radio producer/presenter Sandra Chalmers.

She started as child actress on BBC Radio.
