The first live-action film adapted from the comic book “Teddy Boy” and written by Man Kai Ming, “Young and Dangerous” was a huge success and incredibly, within a few short months, its sequel hit the big screens. Again it became a massive hit which continued to generate more sequels and spin-offs.

By intercutting a series of flashbacks into the opening credits, director Lau is able to make his storyline flow smoothly and thus keeping his audiences up to date. Also by morphing the film's freeze frame image into the original comic, he ties in the storyline smoothly. What follows next also works as a prequel detailing Hung Hing society's “Chicken” Chiu's exile in Taiwan and how he becomes a branch triad leader of the local San Luen society.

To be a fan of Hong Kong cinema is to experience déjà vu on a regular basis. If there is one hit movie in the region, then inevitably there will be numerous follow ups, some done with good intent, others simply to cash in. “Infernal Affairs” was onε such hit and so followed a procession of cop thrillers in quick succession. Never one to miss out on a trend, Wong Jing teamed up with Marko Mak to create what was one of the better examples of the genre with “Colour of the Truth”

Johnnie To’s project, of having three directors emerging from his Fresh Wave program directing three different segments, each dedicated to one of the actual, most notorious kingpins of the 90’s (Kwai Ping-hung Yip Kai Foon and Cheung Tze-keung) and then welding the three together, was one of his greatest success of the latest years, with “Trivisa” earning a number of awards from festivals in the Sinophone world.

“Ip Man : The Final Fight” is a kung fu melodrama following Ip Man’s move to Hong Kong in 1949. The story is told in a series of vignettes, sketching out incidents and dramas of Ip Man’s time in Hong Kong, entwined with the stories of his students. The film is spiced up with dashes of kung fu fighting, with three action set pieces fulfilling and satirising kung fu genre expectations. The big adrenalized finale is excellent. In between the bigger set pieces, there are smaller slices of sparring that focus in on the specific technique of Wing Chun and other schools of Chinese Martial Arts.
Ip Man arrives in Hong Kong in 1949, without in his family, in somewhat vague circumstances. He is given an address to go to, which turns out to be the office of a local labour union. Once he demonstrates a few...

No big revelations this year at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. The Sunday night ceremony has unveiled all the winners for this years Awards and they are all quite an easy guess. Felix Chong’s thriller “Project Gutenberg” was the star of the evening as, predictably – considering its 17 nominations – won Best Film along with other 6 Awards.
But despite the histrionic performances of Chow Yun-fat and Aaron Kwock, the acting Awards are not in the “Project Gutenberg”‘s pile. Anthony Wong took home the Best Actor award for his role as a middle-aged paralysed man in “Still Human“, and newcomer Chloe Maayan won Best Actress for Fruit Chan’s “Three Husbands”, while Kara Hui and Ben Yuen Foo-Wa scored Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor both for “Tracey“.

There will be spoilers within, so if you haven’t seen Young and Dangerous 3 yet, I would advise watching it before reading this. Chicken (Jordan Chan) is also re-instated into the Hung Hing after his exploits with the Taiwanese Triads Sun Luen in the previous film. Coming only two months after the release of the first film in the series, Young and Dangerous 2 actually improves on its predecessor. Young and Dangerous 2 focus more on the complexities of gang life, and is decidedly less comic in tone than the first entry in the series. Initially the main focus of the film is Chicken (Jordan Chan), and his adventures in Taiwan. Viewers will remember that in the first movie, Chicken had to flee Hong Kong and ended up in Taiwan. By the climax of the film he had returned as a gang boss in his own right, and backed up his friend Chan Ho Nam (Ekin Cheng) in the films finale. The first 40 minutes or so of Young and Dangerous...

Directed by Herman Yau (The Legend Is Born: Ip Man), IP Man: The Final Fight stars Anthony Wong (White Vengeance, Infernal Affairs), Eric Tsang (Infernal Affairs), Jordan Chan (White Vengeance), Gillian Chung (The Midas Touch), newcomer Marvel Chow, Anita Yuen (Thunderbolt), Xiong Xin-xin (Shaolin, Tai Chi Zero) and...

The Triads are back in “Young and Dangerous: Reloaded”, which sees producers Wong Jing and Manfred Wong returning to the hugely popular series following the fortunes of good looking gang upstarts. Though their quality might have been variable, the original films really were for many one of the standouts of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema, the first instalment back in 1996 having been directed by Andrew Lau (“Infernal Affairs”) and having helped skyrocket the career of Ekin Cheng, along with co-stars Jordan Chan, Francis Ng, Gigi Lai and Simon Yam. And so, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that more than 15 years and some 10 (at last count) sequels and spin-offs later, a reboot now arrives, directed by Daniel Chan, who recently also dabbled with gang action in “Triad”, attempting to revisit the formula for a new generation. Taking on the all-important lead role is Him Law (“Hong Kong...

Fresh off making what was essentially a Young and Dangerous style gangster flick with Triad, director Daniel Chan Yee Heng does it for real with the Wong Jing-produced Young And Dangerous: Reloaded. Penned by original scriptwriter Manfred Wong, this reboot of the hugely popular series of 1990s movies - based on the comics of Cowman and Dickey Yau - sees Chan Ho Nam, Chicken and the rest of the boys take to the streets of Hong Kong to avenge the death of their boss, Brother Bee. Him Law and Leung Lit Wai embody the iconic roles made famous by Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan, along with a host of young faces including Philip Ng, Ho Wan Sze, Paul Wong, Jazz Lam and Man Chi Leung. Ip Man: Final Fight is the latest movie in production, but this is not part of the Donnie yen series, yet another spin off from the success of the movies like Ip Man – Legend Is Born.
The three leading actors in the movie are Anthony Wong, Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan, all which have studied Wing Chun before the filming of the movie. Anthony Wong will play an older version of Ip Man whilst Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan will play Yip’s students. The cast also includes Anita Yuen, Eric Tsang and Timmy Hung.
Also out this year is the movie Grand Masters, another movie based on the legend of Ip Man, which will star Tony Leung and of course Ip Man 3 – 3D, as Donnie Yen steps back in to play probably the biggest part in his career.
The movie will probably be released sometime in 2013.

White Vengeance is a movie brought to us by director Daniel Lee, who brought us recent movies such as “14 Blades and Three Kingdoms”. He must love making historical movies because this is another one, but once again i have to say it looks like it could be another hit.
The movie stars Leon Lai, Anthony Wong, Liu Yi-Fei, Jordan Chan and Zhang Han-Yu about the Banquet of Hongnam, a major event in the Chu-Han Contention, a major battle between the Han and Chu kingdoms in post Qin Dynasty.
Release Date: 24th November – Hong Kong

Daniel Lee has made quite the career for himself directing historical epics. His previous efforts, “14 Blades” and “Three Kingdoms”, are pretty good movies, though you must possess an appreciation for action-packed period pieces loaded with large-scale battles to truly enjoy them. Continuing in this tradition is Lee’s “White Vengeance”, which stars Leon Lai, Anthony Wong, Liu Yi-Fei, Jordan Chan, and Zhang Han-Yu. That’s a hell of a cast. I must say that the damned thing looks pretty good, and this is coming from someone who feels this sort of motion picture has been done to death. Leave it to Lee to make me eat my words. Here’s hoping this one tastes good. Here’s an epic synopsis for this epic actioner: In the late Qin Dynasty, rebels rose and the nation fell into chaos. Liu Bang (Leon Lai) and Xiang Yu (Shaofeng Feng), serving under King Huai,...

“Mysterious Island” from director Chung Kai Cheung (who worked on “A-1 Headline” with Gordon Chan) is probably best described as a supernaturally themed thriller, though this may be pushing things a bit due to some of the film’s more bewildering elements. Headlined by Hong Kong star Jordan Chan and rising Chinese idol Mini Yang, the film has a supporting cast that includes Hayama Hiro (recently in the awesome “Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy”), Shaun Tam, and Wong Yau Nam and Tsui Tin Yau of Shine fame, with impressive eye candy in the form of Janel Tsai, Maggie Lee, Jessica Xu, and Anya. Perhaps due to films of its type being increasingly rare in Chinese cinema, the film was a huge hit at the Mainland box office, managing to stand proudly alongside high profile summer blockbuster releases like “Wu Xia” and other big budget epics. The flimsy plot follows a...

Once A Gangster stars two actors who are famous for their roles in the hugely popular Young And Dangerous films - Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan. Considering that the last Young And Dangerous film was made back in 2000, it is perhaps not surprising that Cheng and Chan are no longer looking very young or dangerous. And this is something that the filmmakers have cleverly made use of in this gangster satire. It's triad election time, but how times have changed! Gangsters Sparrow (Ekin Cheng) and Roast Pork (Jordan Chan) are the next in line to compete to become Head of the Wo Yee Sing Society, but they are now older and wiser, and no longer keen for the position. Sparrow prefers to study...

I have no idea what in the hell is going on in this clip, but truth be told, that’s exactly why I want to see Kai Cheung Chung’s “Mysterious Island”. If nothing else, at least the marketing campaign stays true to the picture’s title. I’m sure we’ll see a full trailer before long, as the film, which stars Jordan Chan, Mi Yang, Tien You Tsui, Hayama Go, Janel Tsai, and Anya, opens on July 8th, 2011. You can feast your eyes on the strangeness below. To prevent further confusion, here’s a synopsis: A group of young people from different countries head to a deserted island for a survivor competition. The winner who lives through the hardships will be awarded with a big cash prize. However this journey turns out to be much harder than they could stand. First, their maps are gone. Then the competitors are being murdered,...

A number of new Chinese films have unveiled their movie posters at the Cannes Film Festival over the past few days, and here is a selection of them for your viewing pleasure. White Vengeance This one is a historical epic starring Leon Lai (Bodyguards And Assassins, Fire Of Conscience). Directed by Daniel Lee (Dragon Squad, Three Kingdoms, 14 Blades), the film tells the story of a famous Chinese banquet that involved the two key characters in the overturning of the Qin Dynasty. Zhang Hanyu, Liu Yifei, Feng Shaofeng, Anthony Wong, Jordan Chan and Andy On co-star. I have always found director Daniel Lee's movies to be mostly entertaining despite the (very) often messy narrative. So this one should be a fun, if forgettable, historical...

It’s not every day you see a poster for a Hong Kong horror movie featuring a graphic parade of severed body parts, but according to Chinese site Sina the reasons simple. Director Kai Cheung Chung has gone “contemporary” on us, taking inspiration for his latest scare flick Mysterious Island from the likes of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and “Evil Dead,” rather than the traditional Chinese supernatural themes we’ve all seen many times before. ‘Island’ stars Chinese actor and musician Jordan Chan, who will take the lead in a story of a group stranded on a deserted island, inhabited by an evil demonic presence. Granted that’s (so far) perhaps not sounding the most original of storylines, but with slash ’n’ gore style horror still a rarity in Hong Kong, the prospect of some fresh splatter coming our way from this emerging modern horror wave, means we’ll be keeping...

With High School Musical 3 (Aka Will Those Darn Kids Ever Graduate?) ready to hit theaters on Friday, it's clear that American teens love to watch American teens singing, dancing, and romancing. Why shouldn't Chinese teenagers have the same opportunity to admire their peers putting on a show?
Unfortunately, Kung Fu Hip Hop, which opened recently, appears to be a very poor answer. The English-language title and Variety's brief description of it as "China's first musical youth movie" conjured up images of a youthful, breezy entertainment. Would new stars be born? A closer look at the review, however, reveals the better comparison is to Breakin'. You remember Breakin', don't you? That's the 1984 movie Joe Bob Briggs said "shoulda been called 'How To Teach Stupid Honkies How To Rip Up Their Danskins and Thrive on Jive.'" Oh, my.

Film review: 'Kitchen'
"Kitchen" is a dramatically indecisive but ultimately beautiful love story about two weird Hong Kong kids who see themselves as soulmates but can't decide whether to be lovers or just friends.
As part of the new Asian wave, and on the heels of such films as "Chungking Express", this warm and sympathetic picture could have theatrical chances internationally in specialty houses.
The film is an adaptation of the first novel by hot young Japanese writer Banana Yoshimoto. The action has been transferred from Tokyo to Hong Kong, and the actors are Chinese except for main actress Yasuko Tomita.
The story is about two despondent youths: Aggie's family has perished, and Louie (Jordan Chan) only has his mother -- whom he also loses later in the story. Aggie (Tomita) and Louie are soulmates from the beginning, but they don't take the step to becoming lovers until the end of the movie.
As a result, the film suffers from a lack of dramatic ups and downs. This is not a "boy-gets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-gets-girl" movie; it's a "boy-doesn't-tell-girl-he-loves-her, months-go-by, girl-finds-out-that-boy-loves-her" movie.
What hurts the film is that you can't tell whether the characters are rejecting love or just not in it. Yet, even while the audience is trying to figure out Louie and Aggie's feelings, the two main actors are busy burning their helpless, searching personalities into our hearts.
Director Yim Ho delivers an extremely colorful and warm portrait of intimate Hong Kong.
