Songwriter ("I'm Always Chasing Rainbows", "By the Beautiful Sea"),
pianist and composer, he was a pianist in film theatres and in cafes
and vaudeville, and later an arranger for music publishers. He was a
contract writer for Winter Garden productions, and wrote the Broadway
stage scores for "The Passing Show of 1914", "Dancing Around", "Maid in
America", "Oh, Look!", and "The Little Blue Devil". He wrote songs for
the "Ziegfeld Follies" (1920 and 1921), and the "Greenwich Village
Follies". He was a charter member of ASCAP in 1914, and served as a
director from 1914 to 1917. His chief musical collaborators include
Joseph McCarthy, Ballard Macdonald, Harold Atteridge, and Al Bryan. His
other popular-song compositions include "Trail of the Lonesome Pine",
"I Take a Little Rain With the Sunshine", "There's a Girl in the Heart
of Maryland", "The Land of My Best Girl", "Tip Top Tipperary Mary",
"Smother Me With Kisses and Kill Me With Love", "Down in Bom-Bom Bay",
"She Is the Sunshine of Virginia", "On the Mississippi", "Our Home
Town", "Wherever There's Music and Beautiful Girls", "A Kiss for
Cinderella" and "Roll on River Missouri".
