Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.

The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.

Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).

This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).

Best Actor looks set to be one of the most intriguing Oscar races this year with Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) currently battling it out at the top of our odds chart in this category.

Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) are also predicted to reap nominations but it is Bradley Cooper in third spot that makes things really interesting. Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro,” which he also produces, directs and co-writes. The Netflix feature, which opens on November 22, explores the complex marriage between the renowned composer and his wife Felicia Montealegre, who is played by Carey Mulligan. Mulligan is, as always, excellent, but Cooper has the transformative role here.

Makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turns him into Bernstein with astounding makeup and prosthetics. Cooper’s mannerisms, gestures, and vocal work prove add to his performance.

Friends of Oscar-winning makeup artist Greg Cannom have set up a GoFundMe page after major health issues and setbacks have led to soaring medical bills.

Cannom, whose career spans over four decades and is a mastermind in prosthetics, has been nominated for 14 Oscars. He has won four Oscars in best hair and makeup for his work on “Dracula,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Vice.”

So far, over $21,000 has been raised as Cannom suffers from poor health and is no longer able to work and care for himself. According to the GoFundMe, Cannom’s health issues began with shingles, which resulted in permanent nerve damage to his lower legs, making walking difficult and painful. A Staph infection on his ankle never healed properly and spread to his foot, leading to a partial amputation.Late last year, Cannom’s health deteriorated and he remains in the hospital.

But it might surprise you to learn the original comic book on which the film is based was a hell of a lot more violent. The "Mask" comic featured a homicidal central character who would don the eponymous artifact only to unleash hell on those who'd wronged him by the most violent means possible. March is a busy month for makeup designer Mike Marino. First, “The Batman” has just opened in theaters, featuring Marino’s acclaimed work on the face and body of the Penguin, played by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell. And on March 27, Marino will be attending the Oscars as a first-time nominee (alongside colleagues Stacey Morris and Carla Farmer) for his work on “Coming 2 America.”

With this year marking the 40th anniversary of the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars, TheWrap reached out to Marino to commemorate the milestone by listing his five favorite makeup accomplishments of all time.

“I’m not against computer work and CGI and all that,” the New Jersey-based Marino said, “but there are certain things psychologically that makeup does, which is so vital to the inner workings of both the character and the actor. It’s a mistake to replace real practical makeup, even if it can be replaced.

The films up for the 2021 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Emma,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show that “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) is favored to win, followed in order by “Hillbilly Elegy” (4/1), “Pinocchio” (4/1), “Mank” (9/2), and “Emma” (9/2).

Mark Coulier (“Pinocchio”) has already won this award twice for his work in “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2015). “The best step you can take as an actor or actress is not worrying about what you look like, and going into the character instead,” says Matthew Mungle, who created prosthetic makeup design and prosthetics for Glenn Close’s transformation into the nearly unrecognizable Mamaw Vance for “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Mungle, who worked with Close on “Albert Nobbs,” got a call from her in March 2019 telling him that she had secured her next role and required his help. Close sent him a photo of the real Mamaw Vance, a fierce hillbilly who plays a central role in raising her grandson. Mamaw’s life has been marked by poverty and family dysfunction, without time or money for skin care or hair products, so her look is rough around the edges.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild has set Jan. 11 as the date for its seventh annual awards show, four weeks and a day ahead of the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 2020 awards season will have more shows in a tighter time period than usual since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is moving its show forward two weeks.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Julie Socash, president of the guild, which operates as Local 706 of the International Alliance of the Theatrical Stage Employees. The guild also said nominations voting would take place between Oct. 28 and Nov. 8 with nominations announced on Nov. 11. Nominations for Lifetime Achievement Awards nominees will be announced July 9 with voting to open between Aug.

The Big Sick Oscar nominee Kumail Nanjiani has boarded the spy action comedy No Glory which Sam Bain is adapting from a yet to be published manuscript.

The Big Short Oscar winner and recent three-time Vice Oscar nominee Adam McKay will oversee Bain’s script with Nanjiani.

Valparaiso Picture’s David Carrico and Adam Paulsen are producing the project alongside Gary Sanchez Productions’ McKay, Chris Henchy and Will Ferrell. Valparaiso’s head of development Bobby Hoppey will serve as Ep. 30West is co-repping the project with UTA. No director is attached as of yet to No Glory.

No Glory is based on the manuscript which was written by a National Security Operative and author Scott Shephard about the operative’s time in service to the country, a unique account described as “The Rambunctious Patriotism and World-Wide Shenanigans of a First Generation American in the Clandestine Service of a Grateful and Mostly Unwitting Nation.

A host-less Oscars was still riveting TV, though not necessarily for reasons producers or broadcast network ABC might have hoped. And, if you thought losing host Kevin Hart over homophobic tweets from his past would be Oscars biggest controversy this year, you thought wrong.

It was a crafts celebration at the 91st Academy Awards Sunday night, marked by the wonders of “Black Panther’s” Wakanda and “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” nostalgic rock trip.

“Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” shared the night with three craft Oscars apiece. The McU struck Oscar gold for the first time with its superhero phenomenon, taking production design (designer Hannah Beachler and art director Jay Hart ), costume design (designer Ruth Carter), and score (composer Ludwig Göransson).

And the popular Freddie Mercury biopic (starring Oscar winner Rami Malek) offered a powerful, arena-like cinematic experience, snagging awards for editor John Ottman (going without a director in post-production) in tandem with the sound editing and mixing teams.

But for Beachler and Carter (previously nominated for “Amistad” and “Malcolm X”), it was a significant diversity breakthrough, as they became the first blacks to win in their respective crafts. They helped director Ryan Coogler achieve his...

Universal’s Green Book won Best Picture tonight at the 91st annual Academy Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The film’s Mahershala Ali also won Best Supporting Actor, and Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie and Peter Farrelly took the Original Screenplay trophy.

Fox’s Freddie Mercury/Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody ended its awards-season tour with a leading four Academy Awards tonight, led by Best Actor for Rami Malek. It also scored the hardware for Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Sound Design.

Along with Green Book, two other films also went home with three statuettes: Netflix’s Roma and Disney’s Black Panther.

In the end, Oscar watchers and industry members all seemed relieved that all the categories were handed out on air, reversing the Academy’s original plan to present some categories during commercials.

Recipients of the Academy Awards for cinematography, editing, make-up and hairstyling, and live-action shorts all got their time in the spotlight on Sunday night’s Oscar broadcast.

Alfonso Cuaron won for cinematography for “Roma”; John Ottman won editing for “Bohemian Rhapsody”; “Skin,” directed by Guy Nattiv, won for live action short and Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney took the make-up and hairstyling trophy for “Vice,” only to be played off the stage when their speech went on too long.

Women roared at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, picking up a record 15 trophies — the most in Oscar history. With 39 male winners this year, that means women earned nearly 27.8 percent of the statuettes handed out.

The previous record came in both 2007 and 2015, when women earned a total of 12 statuettes, including for the two actress categories.

And it comes after just six women earned Oscars at last year’s ceremony, compared with 33 male winners. That’s little more than 15 percent. It was the lowest number of female winners since 2012’s show (the 85th annual Academy Awards), when only four women brought home statuettes.

Turns out, preparation is not always key — at least not when it comes to Oscars speeches.

Twitter immediately reacted after the winners of the Best Hair and Makeup category stumbled through their acceptance speech at the 2019 Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.

When Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe, Patricia Dehaney-Le May took the stage to accept the award for their work on the film Vice, they attempted to share speech duties by taking turns reading off a sheet of paper.

“Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects.Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. “Vice,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Crazy Rich Asians” were the top makeup and hairstyling winners Saturday at the 6th annual Muahs Guild Awards (at L.A. “Vice” won in the period and/or character make-up category and in the special make-up effects category, which together should make it the frontrunner in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The film won for best period and/or character makeup as well as special makeup effects. “Mary Queen of Scots” received the prize for period and/or character hairstyling. The two films are Oscar-nominated for best makeup and hairstyling along with Swedish import “Border.”

For three-time Oscar winner Greg Cannom—the makeup designer behind Dracula, Mrs. Doubtfire and Titanic—nothing about Vice was simple. For this radically unconventional film, his first with Adam McKay, he was asked to transform Christian Bale into Dick Cheney, and was honest about the fact that he wasn’t sure he could pull it off.

During six weeks of makeup trials with Bale, Cannom was put through the ringer, designing not for one Cheney, but many. Ultimately, George W. Bush’s infamous VP would be seen on screen in many iterations, encompassing over 50 years of history, both personal and political.

Awards season has moved across the pond with this year’s BAFTA Awards in London.

Legendary British actress Joanna Lumley is returning to host Sunday’s awards show in London’s Royal Albert Hall, which is set to honor a wide swath of popular films, including frontrunner “The Favourite.”

With 12 nominations, the Yorgo Lanthimos film has greatly outpaced the rest of this year’s pack, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “First Man,” “Roma,” and “A Star Is Born,” which only garnered seven BAFTA nominations apiece. Also nominated are “Vice,” which scored six nominations, “BlacKkKlansman” with five, and “Cold War” and “Green Book” with four each.

Thanks to makeup guru Greg Cannom, Christian Bale became totally unrecognizable as political lightning rod and VP Dick Cheney in “Vice.” It was a dramatic transformation (from age 21 to 75) that has Cannom poised for his fourth Oscar win.

And nobody was more stunned than Cannom (he collaborated with Kate Biscoe and Patricia Dehaney). “When I first heard that they wanted Christian Bale to be Cheney, I thought they must be kidding,” he said. But there was no other choice for writer-director Adam McKay. Not after he was blown away by Bale’s scene-stealing performance as the eccentric hedge fund genius in “The Big Short.”

“It was amazing how well the old Cheney worked,” Cannom said. “I never thought it would ever get that good. But when the trailer came out, people said, ‘Who is that?'”

And the experience was a revelation for the chameleon-like Bale, who had never worn prosthetics before.

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.

But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.
