- At the age of 20 he made his stage debut at the Landestheater zu Schwerin. This was followed by engagements in Bonn, Vienna, Darmstadt, Bremen and Berlin, where he appeared on stage from 1931.

- During his studies in art history and philosophy, Hansjoachim Büttner already took his first acting lessons with the well-known theater actor Ferdinand Gregori.
- After the Second World War he appeared in East German films.
