The 2024 movie musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" restores a missing puzzle piece in the original film. Penned by Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters, the original "Mean Girls" is a cautionary tale about the corrosive effects of cliques. Having grown up homeschooled, Cady (Lindsay Lohan) is figuring out how to survive in the jungle of a Chicago public high school. She befriends two outcasts, Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese), who recruit her to infiltrate the Plastics, a pink-clad clique of popular girls ruled by Queen Bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Cady finds herself allured by Regina's seemingly titanic confidence -- that is, until Regina steals Cady's crush, locking the two teens in a vicious cycle of revenge.
Eventually, these incidents come to a boil when Regina is accidentally hit by a bus. When a recuperating Regina attends the Spring Fling,...

“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.
Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”
While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

After a fan-led revival, Beetlejuice will end its Broadway run Jan. 8, 2023.
The Broadway musical, based on the 1988 Tim Burton film, originally opened at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on April 25, 2019, and later announced a June 2020 closing (which was moved up due to the industrywide shutdown in March 2020). The closing notice, prompted by the theater owner, was notable because it came as the grosses for the musical were on an uptick, which the production credited to growing fan engagement. However, The Music Man was slated to take that theater.
The musical reopened at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway in April 2022, with most of its original cast.
Since returning to Broadway, the musical has experienced more of a struggle at the box office. In recent weeks, the production has grossed less than 1 million and has been playing to capacities of 60 to 70 percent.

Performances at the Marquis Theatre are scheduled to resume Friday, July 22.
Beetlejuice stars Alex Brightman, Elizabeth Teeter, Kerry Butler, David Josefsberg, Adam Dannheisser and Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer in the musical adaptation of the 1988 film.

In the new Broadway adaptation of Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic film “Beetlejuice,” teenager Lydia takes center stage alongside the titular gut-busting demon (Alex Brightman) to reflect the famed goth girl’s journey through Beetlejuice’s funhouse of death and disaster.
“I think so many people connect to ‘Beetlejuice’ because it’s a story of outsiders, Lydia being the center of that,” said Alex Timbers, director of the new musical comedy. “You want to make the musical as emotional as possible and Lydia felt like she had that heft and that ability.”
At “Beetlejuice’s” opening-night red carpet on Thursday night at the Winter Garden Theatre, Sophia Anne Caruso, who plays Lydia on Broadway, wished longtime fans of the movie might again be uplifted by Lydia’s emotional journey.

Maybe if they’d said it a fourth time. Three times – “Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!” – summons to life the stripe-coated, fright-wigged demon that made a superstar of Michael Keaton way back when. Could a fourth have magically conjured that extra something needed to transform Broadway’s Beetlejuice into something beyond the realm of good enough?
Directed by the busy and talented Alex Timbers, a long-in-the-making musical comedy Beetlejuice, based, faithfully if not enough, on Tim Burton’s 1988 film opens tonight at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre. There’s plenty worth a haunt here, from David Korins’ off-kilter spook house set to Alex Brightman’s raspy-voiced title performance and, most of all, the deliriously gorgeous singing of young Sophia Anne Caruso, and it all comes within reasonable reach of exorcising the bad vibes that attached themselves to the production during its pre-Broadway run in Washington D.

The official trailer for director Ondi Timoner’s Mapplethorpe biopic is out, portraying the controversial artist as he ascends from nowhere to become one of the most talked-about media creators of the 20th Century.
Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith is Robert Mapplethorpe, with Marianne Rendon as punk poet/rocker Patti Smith, Mapplethorpe’s muse.
Mapplethorpe discovered himself both sexually and artistically in New York City throughout the 70’s and 80’s. The film depicts Mapplethorpe’s life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea Hotel, home to a world of bohemian chic. There, he began photographing its inhabitants and his new circle of friends, including artists and musicians, socialites, film stars, and members of the Bds&M underground.
That work displayed eroticism in a way that had never been examined nor displayed before to the public. Much of it was derided or outright banned in certain locales during his lifetime,...

In “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” gay Montana teens are forced into conversion therapy. And it’s likely that arthouse audiences inclined to seek out a Sundance-approved indie about Red State religious dogma will find some of its more brimstoney bits outdated or exaggerated.
But then — and perhaps you’ve also seen “The Handmaid’s Tale”? — reminders of reality will intrude.
Director Desiree Akhavan’s source material (the Ya novel by Emily Danforth) was inspired by the very true story of Zach Stark, who was sent to a Love in Action camp much like the one we see in the movie. Akhavan understands that there’s no need to amplify authenticity, and grounds her story with an admirable, if ultimately frustrating, subtlety.

Back at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, one of the most buzzed about titles, in addition to being a prize winner, was The Miseducation of Cameron Post. This movie seemed poised to be a potential breakout. Then, it was more or less radio silence for the flick. It played at the Tribeca Film Festival, but it wasn’t turning into the quintessential Sundance success story. Well, the time to make it happen is now. This week, the film hits theaters, hoping to attract a diverse audience. It does happen to be a terrific little independent title. So, it’s worth praise and worth seeking out. The film is a coming of age period piece, set in the 1990’s. Here is the plot synopsis: “In 1993 after teenage Cameron is caught in the backseat of a car with the prom queen, she is sent away to a treatment center in a remote area called God’s Promise.

"I'm tired of feeling disgusted with myself." FilmRise has finally released the first official Us trailer for The Miseducation of Cameron Post, the latest from talented filmmaker Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior), adapted from Emily M. Danforth's celebrated novel. This film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the top Grand Jury Prize, even though it received mostly mediocre reviews. Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this as Cameron Post, a girl who is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after she is found kissing another girl. There she befriends the other kids and figures out how to live her own life, even though they're trying hard to help her "pray away the gay". The cast includes Jennifer Ehle, Quinn Shephard, Sasha Lane, Marin Ireland, John Gallagher Jr., Owen Campbell, Kerry Butler, Forrest Goodluck, and Steven Hauck.
