- He married Barbara Kelly in 1942. They had a son and two daughters.

- Successfully auditioned as a singer with the Metropolitan Opera, but his career was cut short by tuberculosis. He subsequently joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a radio engineer, later graduating to work as an announcer, singer and actor.
