He volunteered for the Netherlands India oil battalion in 1943, subsequently trained in the USA, then Australia. Attached to the Australian Army, he participated in the invasion of Borneo. After VJ day, he went to Java and Sumatra and then returned to the Netherlands.

Former member of the Motion Picture Academy's Foreign Language Nominating Committee.
