When it comes to found footage horror, films that manage to successfully deliver scares while also following characters that feel sincere within the “true-to-life” conceit of the subgenre are an infrequent breath of fresh air. It’s even rarer to find a series of films that delivers on these fronts so consistently. Yet, for many die-hard found footage fans, writer, director, and producer Dutch Marich’s Horror in the High Desert series has served up just that over the last 3 years. Now, with the long-anticipated release of Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch, Marich continues to masterfully build out his mysterious universe in which unexplained disappearances and deaths, encounters with otherworldly phenomena, and voyeuristic accounts of terror are the norm.
The film follows Oscar Mendoza (Marco Antonio Parra), a man determined to uncover the truth behind the incidents that befell Gary Hinge (Eric Mencis), Minerva Sound (Solveig Helene), and...

In case you missed it, director Dutch Marich‘s 2021 found footage chiller Horror in the High Desert is a little-known gem that has recently been generating some well-deserved word of mouth among fans of the subgenre. Though found footage remains a subgenre maligned by many, now and then, a filmmaker manages to bring out the best in the format–exploring effective scares, unsettling imagery, and intriguing stories in new and inventive ways. Horror in the High Desert is a prime example of this ingenuity. While the story initially unfolds how a run-of-the-mill spooky docuseries might, the final 10 minutes of the film deliver an equally curious and bone-chilling turn that solidifies Marich’s world firmly in the realm of high strangeness.
If Marich’s microbudget film resonated with you as much as it did me, you have likely already rushed to check out Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva, which...

Chicago – The irony of Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath’s immensely unsettling little shocker, “Entrance,” is that it has caused many viewers to exit before the end credits have rolled. A surprising number of critics have complained that the film betrays its audience by setting up a low-key indie drama and then turning the tables in the final act. Clearly, these people weren’t paying attention.
The entire film is constructed like a mounting nightmare, as it follows a troubled everywoman, Suzy (Suziey Block), through her banal daily routine in La. The editing is so fragmented that the days start to blur into one another. We see her get ready for work, chat with her genial roommate Karen (Karen Gorham) and have passionless sex with a loser who attempts to sheepishly sneak out the next morning. It all seems rather mundane, but it gradually becomes apparent that something is rather…...

Whatever happened to director Joseph Monahan’s independent cannibal-slasher flick Wonder Valley? We caught up recently with the first-time filmmaker to get the skinny on the now completed flick. Read on!
Filmed in May 2011 in the deserts of Joshua Tree, California (see our coverage of that here), Wonder Valley was written by Monahan (who also executive produces), Kenny White and producer Creep Creepersin, and the narrative follows a quartet of vacationers who unfortunately find their numbers start to dwindle during their ill-conceived trip in purportedly unexpected and rather bloody ways. Along with actors Charlie Vaughn and Suziey Block, rounding out the cast are Natalie Pero (Raze), David Michaelson and Kim Ward, with makeup effects provided by Jacky Belle (The Devil’s Carnival).
“The original narrative basically changed back to more of its original form,” director Monahan told us of the Wonder Valley re-shoots, which he recently completed. “Before we shot on location last May,...

There’s no doubt that Los Angeles can be a magical city, but for most of its denizens it’s little more than the urban sprawl they call home. In that regard it’s not very different from any other city, but there remains certain expectations in L.A. that something better is just around the corner. Something unexpected will appear if you give it just one more day. It’s unclear what Suziey (Suziey Block) expected from her L.A. adventure, but whatever dream she once had is long gone. Her days now are little more than exercises in monotony. Wake up, get dressed, feed the dog, walk to her job as a coffee shop barista and then return home for sleep before she does it all over again the next day. She has a roommate and a handful of casual acquaintances, but she’s never really made a connection with anyone (outside of her dog...

Title: Entrance Directors: Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath Starring: Suziey Block, Karen Gorham, Karen Baird, Joshua Grote, Florence Hartigan, Bennett Jones Co-directed by Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath, “Entrance” is a deliberately paced indie offering that bills itself as a psychological thriller but in actuality is a fairly aimless tone piece about twentysomething emotional dislocation that only in its final reel leaps somewhat clumsily into genre-oriented skirmish and combat. As a showcase for narrative restraint and a non-forced lead performance by newcomer Suziey Block, the movie works on a theoretical level, but its grip is a bit too slack and its payoff too pointless to really recommend it. Entrance Written and Directed by: Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath Starring: Suziey Block, Karen Baird and Farley Burge Although Entrance is being marketed as a horror film, it is actually a hybrid of character study and horror. I’m not going to lie; the first 2/3 of the movie is an exceptionally sluggish slow burn. I actually picked up the screening notes twice and reread them, because I thought I had been sent the wrong film. There’s nary a scare to be found, although the film does effectively build a foreboding sense of paranoia. At the conclusion of the film, I understood why the first part of the film works. Think back to Ti West’s The House of the Devil. That film literally creeps up on you by slowly unraveling, all the while lulling the viewer into complacency. The result is a climax that seems a little more...

“Entrance is a riveting new psychological thriller from newcomers Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath, exploring the thin line between anxiety and naked horror in the life of Suzy (Suziey Block), a young woman in Los Angeles who can’t get comfortable in her own skin. A loner who wallows in nostalgia and finds herself wandering aimlessly through life in the city, she can’t shake the gnawing suspicion that a true menace grows just outside her field of vision. As she scrambles to take control of her life, her anxiety rises to a fever pitch that boils over into a waking nightmare.”

In the mid to late 90′s I watched quite a few films about growing up, being different, having the price $6.66 show up everywhere and being a girlie in a “man’s world” breaking out of the traditional mold society likes to poor us into. While Entrance is not exactly a film about growing up, being on the youth fringe and trying to find yourself in a world wholly alien… it actually is just about those exact subjects; it’s about questioning reality as it happens to you and what you let it do to you. I’m not sure that you’ll find it an experience that will assist you on your inner, personal journey if you’re young and lost, but it might help you to avoid one of the classic youth blunders: assuming that your the crazy one and the world ain’t out to get you. “Just because you’re paranoid,...

Just as Jaws scared you out of the ocean and The Blair Witch Project scared you out of camping, Entrance just might tap into your inner fears about those odd sounds around the house at night and after viewing this, you might just find yourself asking, “Did I lock the back door? What’s that rustling outside?”
Writer/Director Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath’s Entrance is a small psychological horror/drama film about a young woman named Suziey (Suziey Block) who fell out of love with the glamorous city but will soon find out that it’s about to let her go.
However, just as Suziey is feeling alienated from city life, so might some viewers feel with Suziey’s mundane routine of getting up, feeding the dog, going to work, coming home, going to sleep, getting up in the morning and doing it all over again.

The reviews for this one have been fairly positive, though I can’t get past how much walking and crying there is in the trailer. And while I shouldn’t judge a film based on a 90 second online video, I just can’t shake the feeling that this was lensed after watching lots of Gus Van Sant movies. For some, that might be a good thing. However, if you felt you wasted your time watching “Gerry” and “Elephant”, then the preview for “Entrance” might be less than impressive. Just a heads up. Handheld camerawork shot on the fly around Los Angeles by Dallas Hallam sets the tone for this collaboration among a half-dozen creatives.
Following Suziey as she gets by without a car, works at a coffee shop, gets her hair done and falls asleep to a horror movie, we’re unsure of anything story-related and know little other than that she looks good on camera. The lack of any detail upon which to hang our expectations is initially translated (by this audience member) as a confident start to a film that feels as if it’s going to deliver something artistically fulfilling.

One small thud and a series of footsteps later,...

The prestigious 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival is currently under way, and while there aren’t a lot of genre films on this year’s slate, there’s one independent slasher flick that has caught our attention here at Dread Central: the creepy indie horror flick called Entrance.
Directed by relative newcomers Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, Entrance introduces us to recent Los Angeles transplant Suzy (skillfully played by actress Suziey Block), who finds herself in a bit of a rut while living in the City of Angels. Then, strange things start happening to Suzy that may or may not be her increasing paranoia getting the best of her, and once she’s pushed to the brink, she realizes it’s time to head back home to Michigan. On her last night in Los Angeles, the unthinkable happens, and Suzy realizes that all those sinister coincidences over the previous weeks...

The 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival runs from June 16th-26th so expect coverage of the genre films that will be screening there over the coming days. First up is character-study-meets-horror-flick Entrance from directors Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath.
Synopsis:
Entrance is centered upon Suzy (Suziey Block), a young woman in Los Angeles who can't get comfortable in her own skin. She's haunted by nostalgia, has no real friends, and finds herself wandering aimlessly through life in the city. Suzy now feels stuck, her part-time-turned-full-time job at a coffee house was never meant to be forever. With each day she finds it increasingly difficult to put on a smile for strangers while making their lattes. Her alienation begins to stretch into the deeper corners of her life. She comes to find herself unable to connect with anyone, let alone her roommate Karen, whose life Suzy wishes was her own.
Soon, what...

Recently Dread caught up exclusively with filmmaker Charlie Vaughn (director of Bloody Mary 3D) and in this capacity actor in regard to his current turn as ‘Jeffery’ in the now shooting cannibal-slasher flick Wonder Valley. Read on for a first look at ocular candy featuring star Suziey Block and a teaser poster from the indie production.
Helmed by first-time feature director Joseph Monahan, whose background lies in specialty photography (he was responsible for the rig that rendered that hammer Pov in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor), Wonder Valley was shooting Day Five last evening in the deserts of Joshua Tree, California. Written by Monahan (who also executive produces), Kenny White and producer Creep Creepersin, the narrative follows a quartet of vacationers who unfortunately find their numbers start to dwindle during their ill-conceived trip in purportedly unexpected and unsurprisingly rather bloody ways. Along with Vaughn and Block, rounding out the cast are...
