The official trailer release for HBO’s latest documentary, “A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting” arrives amid wide-spread conversation of continued anti-Semitism in the media and just a week after Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar year. But the film’s impact is intended to reach beyond the community it reflects by informing viewers about the heart-wrenching tragedy that occurred four years ago in Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania.

On Oct. 27, 2018, a white supremacist attack targeted the congregation at Pittsburgh synagogue, resulting in the death of eleven people and injuries to six others — some of whom were Holocaust survivors. The recent round of reboots hasn’t set the world on fire when it comes to winning accolades. But that changed with ABC’s “The Wonder Years,” which premiered last September. A big reason is it’s a complete reimagining. Like the original series, this new iteration of The Wonder Years will take place in the socially and politically turbulent 1960s. But instead of following the white middle class Arnold family, the reboot will center on a Black middle class family from Montgomery, Alabama. ABC has handed a pilot production commitment to The Wonder Years, a new iteration of the network’s 1980s family comedy-drama. It comes from Dave executive producer Saladin K. Patterson, Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, the original series’ breakout star Fred Savage and 20th Century Fox TV.

Written by Patterson inspired by his experiences growing up in Montgomery, Al, the new incarnation of Wonder Years chronicles how a middle-class Black family in Montgomery in the turbulent late-1960s — the same era as the original series — made sure it was the Wonder Years for them too.

The approach is reminiscent of the successful current reimagining of the classic family sitcom One Day at a Time with a Latinx family.

ABC is bringing back “The Wonder Years,” putting in development a new take from “Empire” creator Lee Daniels, that will shift the focus to a Black middle class family in Alabama.

The new version will be directed and executive produced by Fred Savage, who starred as Kevin Arnold on the original series. Neal Marlens, who co-created the series with Carol Black, will serve as consultant on the Daniels-led version. The new “Wonder Years” will take place in the same era, the 1960s, but relocate to Montgomery, Alabama during the height of the Civil Rights movement.

Derek Waters loves TV history — so much so that he even keeps a collection of old TV Guide magazines at home. As the co-creator and host of Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated “Drunk History,” it’s perhaps no surprise that Waters reveres classic TV — particularly from his childhood era of the 1980s.

But here’s where he draws the line at nostalgia: Reboots and remakes.

“I hope some day, I’m alive to see some sort of law passed where something, be it ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ once a show or movie [has been given] some sort of accolade, it can be shut,” Waters told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You’re not allowed to touch this. Leave it alone.”

Who’S It For? “The Wonder Years” is timeless. Thankfully it doesn’t feel dated simply because I was a child of the ’80s trying to understand life in the late ’60s. “The Wonder Years” was my gateway drug to a nostalgia I didn’t even know. Like many of you, I grew up with Kevin. I hoped for Winnie, I had friends like Paul (and probably was Paul more than I realized).

I can’t wait to show “The Wonder Years” to my son. I’ll have to wait, because he hasn’t even turned two yet, but now I have six episodes to show him, and hopefully that will just be the beginning.

The Wonder Years series is finally coming to DVD and StarVista Entertainment and Time Life have revealed the creative packaging for the 26-disc set! This is just one of several different ways that the series will be released. 

This is one of my favorite TV series of all time, and I'm so happy that I'll actually be able to finally own it. I never thought it would happen. The show was created by Neal Marlens and Carol Black and it had a great cast, which included Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervey, and many more. If you haven't watched this series in awhile you might be surprised by some of the other actors that showed up in this show before they became big stars.

The Super Bowl is usually the highest-rated single television broadcast of the year, so the post time slot is probably the most coveted in TV because of the massive lead-in audience (upwards of 100 million viewers). This couldn’t come at a better time. Kate Kulzick recently asked me to take part in an upcoming episode of the Televerse podcast. The show’s guest spots feature in depth discussion of the guest’s favourite TV show from the past. Naturally I called dibs on The Wonder Years, one of my all time favourite series. The problem was that unlike most long-running popular American television series, The Wonder Years has still not yet been released on DVD despite popular demand – allegedly due to music licensing issues. However in a recent blog update on the Netflix website, Netflix stated that they would be adding The Wonder Years to their instant streaming service.
