Disney's latest live-action riff on a classic is "Peter Pan & Wendy," a new adaptation of the classic "Peter Pan" story. Ever since first taking center stage in J.M. Barrie's 1904 stage play, Peter Pan and the magical land of Neverland have captured imaginations all over the world. The whimsical story with a hint of darkness has inspired plenty of movies, plays, and books over the years, each with a slightly different take on the Boy Who Never Grew Up. Here's a brief look back at all of the notable movie adaptations and how they each made the Neverland mythos their own.
"Peter Pan" (1924)
The first authorized movie adaptation of "Peter Pan" was this silent film version, starring Betty Bronson as Peter Pan, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy Darling, and Virginia Brown Faire as Tinker Bell. J.M. Barrie personally worked on a screenplay for this one,...

I should not pride myself in my ability to not be bored stiff by black-and-white movies, or by a supposedly stilted style of acting present in films from before the 1960s. There is a perception in the world, though, that audiences under the age of 30—I’m nearing the precipice of being on the opposite side of that line, but not yet—are, for the most part, unable to deal with older films or engage with them properly. On one hand, I bristle at the stereotype, not just because of my love for film of any age, but because I know from writing for this website,...

Of all the classic animated films, Peter Pan may be the one that has spread its influence furthest. From James Kirk’s reference to the second star on the right to Michael Jackson’s compound being called Neverland, the enduring story of the boy who didn’t want to grow up resonates with us all. Walt Disney has shined its latest crown jewel to a brilliant luster in the Diamond Edition release of Peter Pan, a combo pack featuring Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital copy (along with a Storybook app for tablets). Said to be one of Disney’s favorite stories, he intended it to be among his earliest releases but circumstances delayed it from being completed until its 1953 release. As a result, some of the lush rotoscoping we saw in Snow White is replaced with complete hand-drawn animation, but it also means some of the figures, from Smee to the...

Peter Pan
Directed by: Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske
Cast: Bobby Driscoll, Kathryn Beaumont, Hans Conried
Running Time: 1 hr 16 mins
Rating: G
Due Out: February 5, 2013
Plot: Wendy and her brothers are whisked away to the magical world of Neverland with the hero of their stories, Peter Pan.
Who’S It For? Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan, but perhaps you haven’t seen it for a while. This review will clue you in if your child is ready.
Movie:
Since we all know the basic concept of the film, but are perhaps years (or decades) removed from seeing it, I’ve decided to do a running diary review of Peter Pan. I hope you enjoy.

Well, maybe not (unless it.s a skull and crossbones, but you have to join Hook.s crew and set out to sea). Peter Pan comes to Blu-ray with a wonderful portion of fairy dust. John (voiced by Paul Collins), Michael (Tommy Luske), and Wendy Darling (Kathryn Beaumont) are the children of a banker in London. Wendy tells the boys of the Peter Pan and his magical adventures in Neverland. One evening when their parents are going to a party, Peter Pan (Bobby Driscoll) actually does fly into their nursery. Cinelinx has a wonderful thought after watching the Peter Pan: Diamond Edition Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Three British children are transported to Neverland, where a young boy named Peter and his band of Lost Boys do battle with the nefarious pirate Captain Hook. Based on the classic children's novel by Sir James Barrie.
The Delivery
Sir James M. Barrie's classic children's novel about the boy who never grew up has seen a number of incarnations, from the original story to a number of silent film and stage adaptations. Walt Disney's animated version, released in 1953, keeps some of the elements of the original story, with a good amount of Disneyfication (for lack of a better term) thrown in.
The fact that Disney softened some of the darker elements, added musical numbers, and changed a few things is hardly a drawback. In fact, it gives this version just the right personality and distinction.

I was surprised when I first heard that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment was going to reissue the 1951 animated version of Alice in Wonderland this month in a remastered Blu-ray 60th Anniversary Edition. It is only a matter of months since it was reissued on DVD as a two-Disc 'Un-Anniversary' special. Given that the principal reason for releasing it this year was presumably to celebrate its birthday, one can't help wondering why Disney didn't just wait until now instead of double dipping.
It also seems an odd choice to me because the tone of the film feels out of step with that of those movies that have preceded it in Disney's hi-def remastering program. These include Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Beauty and the Beast. Anyone familiar with the stories on which Alice was based (Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through...

Alice In Wonderland (1961)60th Anniversary Edition (Blu-Ray & DVD)Walt Disney Home Entertainment1951/Rated G/Running Time 75 minsList Price $39.99 – Now AvailableThere is not really a lot that can be said about Alice In Wonderland that most of you will not already know. Walt Disney's seventh feature-length animated film is a loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll's two novels “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. Quite possibly the most surreal Disney film of its time, it essentially attempts to cram a vast amount of material into its 75-minute running time, with at least partial success. The film takes the form of a number of set-pieces, most of them highly farcical, each completed under the supervision of a different sequence director. While this method of filmmaking undoubtedly led to each team striving to make their own sequence the best it could possibly be, it results in a very episodic structure,...

The Buzz: This film looks stunning. I’m excited to see it in IMAX 3D. With a cast of relative unknowns (save Richard Roxburgh of Moulin Rouge) the star of this one looks to be cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin.
This is S.O.P. as far as Hollywood marketing is concerned, but I’ve always been annoyed when production credits are used to dupe the cinematically challenged populace. .Everyone.s a little mad here.. Walt Disney adapts Lewis Carroll.s famous text, but the result may not appear high up on aficionados of either gentleman.s lists. What I do know is that my two-year-old watched the film five times over the weekend, several times one right after the other. Scholars and historians may disagree, but the intended audience in this instance has the final word. Alice (Kathryn Beaumont) is spending the day by the riverside. She.s bored with the dry historical text being read to her and imagines a world where animals talk. About the same time she sees a White Rabbit (Bill Thompson) with a waistcoat and a pocket watch. Alice in Wonderland Quick Thoughts:
Alice in Wonderland is far from the top of my list of favorite classic Disney animated features, but it is a film I enjoy, particularly for how absolutely off the wall it is. This is a film you can look at from a myriad of angles, one being that it's just another Disney animated film with crazy characters and a penchant for occasionally dark material. Another way to look at it is as a psychedelic acid trip. No matter how you view it there will always be a hookah smoking caterpillar and a queen hell bent on chopping people's heads off. Even writing that last sentence makes me want to take a second look and make sure this actually is from Walt Disney.
As for this Blu-ray, it's great. Digitally restored and enhanced with a new DTS-hd Master 5.1 audio mix. The only time I noticed...

Intense & claustrophobic, the film pulls you in right from the start. Ryan Reynolds does an astounding job, giving what I believe to be the performance of his career. While the whole film takes place inside of a coffin, it remains thrilling & exciting to watch the entire time.
The film has a definite Hitchcockian feel to it, and much like it has been said before by other people who have watched the film, Rodrigo Cortés has made a film this is just as astounding as Alfred Hitchcok would have conceived, had he been given this script while he was alive.
I say that this film is definitely worth a viewing, especially if you like Ryan Reynolds. His fantastic acting skills are on full display for you during each and every minute of the picture. It’s a shame he wasn’t nominated for any acting awards for this film, because I believe he earned one.

We decided to start our little research of immortal young lady Alice in Wonderland, that still, after exactly 145 years, has a power to inspire directors all over the world.
You all guess that the main reason for this certainly is the latest, Tim Burton’s new incarnation of this story.
But let’s start from a beginning. We were all young, we all liked fairy-tales (well, some of us still do), and enjoyed so many characters, we all had our special heroes. Then, what’s so magical about this story, when it still manages to stay on the top of the list?
Ok, we all know the facts, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is written by the English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used a pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The story tells what happens to a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy world which is populated...

Starring: Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn
Rating: G
Release Date: 1951
Trailer Score: 7/10
My Thoughts: I know what you are thinking. You thought there was another new trailer for Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Look, I’m sure there is, but can you humor me just for a second? Watch this trailer and see how they used to do it in the 50s. Just unreal. I absolutely love how they talk directly to the audience, instead of simply showing clips of the film. Plus, the Disney machine was in full force back then, teasing you with Snow White and Cinderella to see Alice. My favorite part though has to be at the :42 second mark. “The wonderful friends she meets,” as the psycho cast, let by the Queen of Hearts is trying to kill her. Good times. I’m hooked.

Now, typically I'm hesitant to show off any of those generic hack edit jobs that your average Mac user pulls together using their favorite song and pieces from the movie they felt should be rearranged so they fit some wildly poor excuse for a beat. But these are different. These are sublime. Take a look.

You might not consider Hook to be one of Steven Spielberg's finer films, but even then you can't deny the high quality mixing and amazing composition created here. I think it's fair to say Dustin Hoffman has a rap career in his future.

Play it once. Play it again. And again. It's addictive...
