Once again, Subhash K Jha revisits a film in his This Day That Year series, this installment shines the spotlight on the film Thanks Maa. A gritty hard hitting drama of a street kid’s search for an infant’s mother also, according to the director, paid a tribute to Salman Khan’s career.
Strongly reminiscent of Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and far more resonantly representative of Mumbai’s slum kids than Slumdog Millionaire, Thanks Maa, which clocks fifteen years on March 5, is a journey into lives that were born into despair. Without the crutches of self-pity, debutant director Irfan Kamal (son of the reputed choreographer Kamal) enters the world of the orphaned protagonist named Municipality, who, on one of those routine days of scavenging, stealing, and hanging around with his friends waiting for the next meal comes across an abandoned little infant. Renuka Shahane’s On-Set Memory (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)
Hum Aapke Hain Koun was a landmark film that redefined Bollywood’s family drama genre and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the movie was a grand celebration of Indian traditions with Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit leading an ensemble cast. Among them, Renuka Shahane stood out as Pooja, the perfect elder sister whose warmth and charm won over audiences.
For Shahane, the film was a turning point. Though she had appeared on television and in films before, Hum Aapke Hain Koun cemented her as the quintessential “girl next door.” However, her character’s tragic demise in the film left an unforgettable impact on viewers. Decades later, Renuka recalls the behind-the-scenes moments of filming her on-screen death and funeral, including a hilarious incident from the set.

No one does it quite like Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Slb). His cinema weaves passionate dreams into the operatic language, creating a world so beautiful you wish it really existed. In an industry where filmmakers think flying cars and smashing chorus dancers are the acme of aesthetics, here is that rare creative genius in the tradition of V Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan, and Bimal Roy who toils over frame and every costume of his incandescent heroine as if his life dependent on it.
Here’s looking at Slb’s enchanting oeuvre.
1. Khamoshi: The Musical (1996):
Some say Slb’s first film about the beautiful, vulnerable Annie (Manisha Koirala) trying to cope with the possessive demands of her deaf and mute parents is still his most honest work. The truth is Khamoshi fell prey to dishonesty when the original tragic ending of Annie’s death had to be changed on distributors’ demand.

25 years ago, the face of Indian television changed beyond recognition. Nobody—not even the enterprising, far-sighted Star Plus boss Sameer Nair, who surreptitiously initiated moves to import Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (Kaun Banega Crorepati) into this country—could have guessed what was in store for and on Indian television in and from July 2000 onwards.
The other channels were left looking like honorary denizens of the idiot box (with the stress on idiot). From a distant third, Star Plus simply swept past the competition to emerge way ahead of Zee and Sony Entertainment, who didn’t know what hit them until it was too late.
Who would have thought that Kaun Banega Crorepati would change us into a nation of knowledge-thirsty gamblers? Now children in their free time no longer play—or watch—Antakshari. They play Kaun Banega Crorepati, and everyone wants to be Amitabh Bachchan. An unprecedented Gk wave took over the country.

The kindest thing that can be said about this 9-episode homage to Rajshri Productions’ sanskari series is that it works better than the last time Sooraj Barjatya tried to keep with the times in Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. Tonally and in terms of updating the typical joint family, creaky limbs, and all, Bade Naam Karenge on SonyLIV gets it right, at least some of the time.
Sadly, too much playing time spoils the broth… or shall I say the vrat?
Sooraj Barjatya introduces himself as the ‘showrunner’ of SonyLIV’s marathon series. Firstly, the show doesn’t run; it crawls. This is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to a Sooraj Barjatya presentation: the characters take their time to get to the point. They have so much to do besides dealing with the central drama.
As is the case in most Barjatyawala presentations, there is much eating,...

Sooraj Barjatya believes the audience likes both Prem and Animal? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Sooraj Barjatya has long been a flag-bearer of wholesome, family-oriented cinema. His signature style, filled with traditions, and moral values, has shaped the careers of many actors – none more so than Salman Khan, who immortalized the character of Prem in films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, and Hum Saath Saath Hain. However, cinema has evolved dramatically since then.
Audiences have embraced darker, intense narratives, with Animal, Ranbir Kapoor’s latest blockbuster, being a prime example. Though Animal is also about family, its portrayal of love, violence, and revenge is drastically different from Barjatya’s vision of familial relationships. Given the current preference for gritty storytelling, many believe that Prem’s era is over. But does Sooraj Barjatya agree?

The series Bada Naam Karenge bears your stamp in almost every frame, although you are not the official director. How deep is your participation in this series?
My involvement in Bada Naam Karenge has been as a showrunner. I worked closely with the director, Palash Vaswani, and the writers, Manasvi and Vidit, discussing the story, characters, and overall vision. I offered my guidance and shared my experience, but ultimately, Palash was the captain of the ship. It was a collaborative effort, and I’m very happy with how it has turned out.
What prompted your banner, Rajshri, to take the Ott plunge?...

Here’s Why People Doubted Sooraj Barjatya & Shahid Kapoor’s Vivah (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)
Sooraj Barjatya has been a cornerstone of Bollywood for decades, making wholesome, family-oriented movies. His narrative around the character Prem has been loved by multiple generations. From Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hai Koun…! to Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Barjatya is known for his work alongside Salman Khan. However, in 2006, he cast someone else for the lead role, which was when Vivah was made.
Starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, the film explores the beauty of arranged marriages and the emotional journey of two individuals brought together by family ties. During the film’s promotion, Barjatya was asked whether a movie like Vivah could find an audience when live-in relationships were becoming increasingly common. Nonetheless, the movie did very well at the box office, grossing about ₹54 Crore on a budget of ₹8 Crore, and remains a timeless classic.

Madhuri Dixit Hum Saath Saath (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sooraj Barjatya’s 1999 film Hum Saath Saath Hain is one of Bollywood’s most cherished family dramas. It features an ensemble cast including Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish Bahl, and Tabu. However, the film could have had an additional Bollywood superstar: Madhuri Dixit.
In a recent conversation with Radio Nasha, Barjatya revealed that Madhuri Dixit expressed keen interest in being part of the film, even if it meant playing a supporting role as Salman Khan’s sister-in-law. However, the filmmaker ultimately decided against casting her, and the role eventually went to Tabu.
Sooraj Barjatya wasn’t comfortable with Madhuri Dixit playing Salman’s Bhabhi
Sooraj Barjatya recently sat down for an interview with Radio Nasha. After the blockbuster success of Hum Apke Hai Kaun, he was working on Hum Saath Saath Hain and had already cast Salman Khan.

Bollywood hitmaker Sooraj Barjatya is making his entry into digital entertainment with the series “Bada Naam Karenge,” launching on streaming platform SonyLIV. The move was driven by the platform’s unique request for family-centered content, a genre traditionally seen as counter to contemporary online viewing trends.
The filmmaker’s illustrious career includes directing some of Indian cinema’s biggest hits like “Maine Pyar Kiya” (1989), “Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!” (1994), “Vivah” (2006) and “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” (2015) — all romances revolving around the family unit.
“We had visited lots of platforms, and they had all told us the family drama space doesn’t belong on Ott [streaming] because it belongs primarily to thrillers and action,” Barjatya tells Variety. “I was really taken aback when Sony was so forthcoming and asking us to make something from our sensibility. They wanted to bring in the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ and ‘Vivah’ audience to Ott, to expand their viewer base.

Subhash K Jha looks back at Salman Khan’s Jai Ho, released 11 years ago today, in this special feature.
We really can’t judge a Salman starrer by normal yardsticks. If this film starred another superstar, it would be evaluated from another perspective. But Salman is…Salman! He doesn’t desire nor seek anyone’s approval. The characters he plays also display the same level of arrogant self-worth. When he roars against corruption in hai-hai places the sound quivers in approval.
Welcome to the uncommon Common Man. He is tough and gutsy, and he doesn’t believe in common courtesy. He delivers a mean punch when required. But at home, he’s just your regular guy snuggling up to his super-mom, confiding in his sister, and fighting off the amorous advances of the over-friendly neighbour, who is fortunately female.
To the fanatics of Salman (fans are for ordinary superstars), Jai Ho...

Iranian writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof’s new blood-freezing film The Seed Of The Sacred Fig was shot in complete secrecy without the totalitarian government’s knowledge or approval. This explains why the characters, a man of the Establishment, his wife, and daughters, look so disturbingly stricken in the film’s most chilling moments of insubordination and retaliation.
This is not an easy film to watch. Its slow-burn treatment of authoritarianism and bullish approach to officialdom’s dumb, unquestionable fascism tend to throw us off course. But then we settle down to witness what can only be perceived as the rapid decline of values and the complete collapse of the conscience. It gets sobering and scary.
There is a longish sequence where Iman’s wide cleans out a grisly facial wound of a girl who has been shot at. It is terrifying not so much for the sight of an open wound...

If the actors in this industry struggle with something, it is age-specific and age-relevant roles. Everyone is waiting for that age-appropriate role, from Hema Malini to Jaya Bachchan and Dharmendra to Govinda. However, the tragedy is that once in a while, when this opportunity arrives for an actor who is a delight for a director, it gets compromised due to a badly written script.

It’s quite rare for actors to grow up on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has portrayed an array of characters in the space of the hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
While Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his career at the age of 17, India has Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal. All of their careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida started her journey at 17 with the film ‘Taqdeer’, a role offered to her by Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya. How she was offered her first role has a story of its own, something that rarely happens to artistes. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.
