Michael Balfry, CSC is a two-time Emmy nominee, ASC Nominee and recipient of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) Award for Best Cinematography in Documentary for Sola.
His latest project is the hit Netflix live adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender released in February 2024.
Balfry is also known for his work on Trial & Error (2018), Resident Alien (2021), The Dead Zone (2004) and R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour (2010) for which he received a nomination from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
He began his career in 1994 working on short films including Jail Stories (1994), Candy from Strangers (2001), Sola (2001) and Violet (2002).
With more than 30 years of experience in the film and television industry, Balfry has traveled throughout North America, Europe and Asia, capturing images with stunning results.
Balfry's additional accolades include two Leo Awards for Best Cinematography in a Short Film and Best Cinematography in a Short Drama for his work on Shadowplay (2012). He received an ICVM Crown Award and a nomination for the historical drama Sight (2024). He is an active member of the International Cinematographers Guild, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) ICG 669 and the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.
Based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, Balfry is represented in the United States by Zero Gravity Management.
