The distribution company Kino Lorber recently launched an interesting Blu-ray line called Kino Cult, and so far they have released the 1985 sci-fi Western Alien Outlaw, the Bettie Page double feature Teaserama and Varietease, the 1985 horror film The Dark Power, the 1974 drama Drifter, the 1974 Jess Franco horror film Lorna the Exorcist, the 1973 Jess Franco crime thriller Sinner: The Secret Diary of a Nymphomaniac, and the 1985 Clive Barker adaptation Underworld (a.k.a. Transmutations). Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that five more Kino Cult Blu-ray releases are set for August 20th, and there’s a theme to this batch: they’re all “nature run amok” horror movies! Most of them are movies I love to watch, too. Here’s the line-up: The Food of the Gods, Empire of the Ants, Frogs, Squirm, and Kingdom of the Spiders. Each one is available for pre-order on Amazon, and each of these...

A federal judge has dismissed Frances Fisher’s lawsuit against SAG-AFTRA, in which the actress accused the union and several of its former and current leaders of breaching their duty of fair representation over the raising of eligibility requirements for coverage under the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan

Amazon Women on the Moon
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1987 / 85 Min. / 1:85
Starring Lots of Actors
Cinematography by Daniel Pearl
Directed by Joe Dante, Carl Gottlieb, Peter Horton, John Landis, Robert K. Weiss
Mark Twain said “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” That applies just as well to 1987’s Amazon Women on the Moon, John Landis’s unofficial sequel to Kentucky Fried Movie and the bastard child of Joe Dante and Jon Davison’s The Movie Orgy. Like those back-handed tributes to the disreputable entertainments of our youth, Amazon Women is a smorgasbord of comedy skits, some served up just right and others pretty half-baked—but a judicious use of the remote control and patience rewards; overall the result is a good-natured vacation for the mind with three or four laugh-out-loud vaudeville sequences and a couple of bona-fide short-form classics. The exclusive 4K Ultra-hd club welcomes a worthy new member, Joe Dante’s evergreen horror comedy (and Christmas delight) about a cute furry critter and its 2nd-generation horde of scaly, impish demons. These aren’t Gremlins from the Kremlin, but homegrown domestic terrorist monsters, and Dante contrasts their killer antics with a sentimental parody of small town America. No CGI … You will believe that the animatronic rascals can multiply like rabbits, break dance, and run amuck!

For Nightmare Cinema, five Masters of Horror have assembled to immerse fans in five tales of terror, all told within the confines of a haunted movie theatre inhabited by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious entity who oversees the facility, showing those who dare enter its doors their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Nightmare Cinema directors include Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and it features performances from the likes of Richard Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser, Belinda Balaski, Patrick Wilson, and Annabeth Gish, to name a few.
The wraparound segment in Nightmare Cinema is called “The Projectionist,” and it acts as the glue that brings all these different stories and cinematic visions together through the Rialto Theatre. There’s nothing I like better than getting hold of a movie that I’ve been searching over three decades for and adding it to my collection. At my age, there aren’t many vintage films left that I don’t own in one format or another, so when I heard that the 1976 cult classic Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw was getting a Blu-ray release, I was quite enthused. This movie has somehow always managed to elude me. It never seemed to play on any of my cable stations in the early 80s, we never had a copy of it at the video store I worked at in the mid-80s and I was still never able to find a copy of it anywhere throughout the 90s. To be honest, by the time the 21st century hit, I completely forgotten about this movie, so I was pretty...

Animal horror was big in the 1970s, and it’s not just the fault of Jaws. Environmental concerns carrying over from the previous decade were seeping into the American consciousness and, by extension, the American genre film.
Pesticides, pollution and ever-increasing concerns about nuclear power funneled their way into a slew of eco-horror movies in which mankind’s incessant tampering with the environment led Mother Nature to retaliate in the form killer animals, insects and fish, often mutated to gigantic size and always ready to kill. Titles like Grizzly and Night of the Lepus and Kingdom of the Spiders and The Swarm were de rigueur for ‘70s horror, and while the genre has never really gone away — every year sees a few new killer animal films (and that’s not counting the SyFy Channel nonsense like Crocosaurus) — it reached its zenith during that decade. Halloween is nigh, and that means horror movies aplenty, not that we need any more of an excuse to dust off the classics of our favorite genre. But Beyond Fest, an event taking place in La throughout this October, is making that experience interactive, bringing together some of the finest filmmakers, the best movies, and even infusing screenings with live music from the likes of Umberto, Goblin, and Alan Howarth.
Perhaps the day I was most looking forward to was this past Saturday’s “Full Moon” double feature, serving up perhaps the two best werewolf movies of all-time, right after one another. Kicking off the evening is 1981′s The Howling, followed by the movie that it (and every werewolf movie) is indebted to: Universal’s The Wolf Man, with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. That right there is reason enough to make the trek to the movie theater…...

1981 was a pretty exciting year for fans of werewolf cinema. Not only did we get John Landis' masterful An American Werewolf in London and a decent adaptation of Whitley Streiber's novel Wolfen, but there was also Joe Dante's The Howling, which is a clever little werewolf flick with a sense of humor that still holds up pretty darn well after all these years. No, the special effects aren't quite as amazing as those found in the John Landis movie, and some of the film's social commentary is stuck firmly in the late 1970s, but given how seldom we get new werewolf flicks these days, there's always something to be said for an old one that can still deliver the goods.

It was recently announced that director Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play) is involved with a horror-themed cruise called the Ship of Fear. The event will take place during Halloween 2013 and is going to be a mix of a horror convention, rock concert, and a party on the ocean. We recently interviewed Tom Holland, who talked about launching this venture and what we can expect:
How did you become involved in launching a horror-themed cruise?
Tom Holland: David Chackler has been a friend of mine and my music supervisor since Fright Night. He suggested doing a horror-themed cruise on the ocean and I thought it was a great idea because you can party the whole time without having to worry about driving home [laughs]. This is party-oriented and done safely. David had access to Ecp because he had been doing these themed cruises for smooth jazz and I thought it was a great idea.

Tom Holland is a busy man. The Fright Night director not only just opened his own horror memorabilia site, Twisted Curios, but is directing the Stephen King adaptation The Ten O’Clock People as well. And now, he has lassoed Alice Cooper and company to command the Ship Of Fear: A Horror Cruise, an event to mark on your calendar for next Halloween.
The Ship Of Fear will be a cruise boat adventure with some of the greatest directors and actors from the horror genre onboard (featuring notables from The Lost Boys, Gremlins, Friday The 13th, Pet Sematary, and more), along with rock stars, illusionists, performance artists, and presumably all sorts of horror gags for its five nights of fun in the ocean. If you order early, a position on the scary schooner will only cost you $729. To check out ticketing, go here.

Back in 1991, Eerie, Indiana premiered on NBC. It was created by Karl Schaefer and Jose Rivera, who had two tracks of mind in creating the series. One, to create a show for children that didn’t pander to children and secondly, to have a fun and scary show. And you know what?
They succeeded.
Eerie, Indiana takes place in the titular town. We first meet Marshall Teller on his paper route. He’s relocated from the dank, rotting Big Apple. He misses it. His father, Edgar is an inventor for a company in Eerie called “Things, Incorporated,” and his mother, Marilyn is a party planner despite having lax organizational skills. His sister, Syndi is a regular, normal teenage girl. Marshall is the odd one out in his family it seems. But he notices that something is amiss in this ‘burb. He sees an older, fatter Elvis on his route. He...

Dread Center and yours truly caught up with filmmaker Greg Beville this week to get the lowdown on Blackstar Canyon, an indie horror feature currently in pre-production which he wrote and will direct. Read on for the first details.
“We plan on shooting mid-summer 2012 in Newhall, California, on the Red Epic,” said Beville of the status of Blackstar Canyon, which is set to star Halloween series vet Danielle Harris as well as actors Brian Krause, Tiny Lister, Tippi Hedren (The Birds) and Belinda Balaski (The Howling). “The cinematographer will be Ricardo Gale (Touching Home),” Beville continued, “and Ty Mitchell ("Andy" in John Carpenter’s The Fog) will serve as camera operator.”
Having previously scripted the upcoming feature The Night Watch for Electric Cobalt Entertainment - the production house behind Blackstar Canyon - Beville described the latter as “a cross between Darabont’s The Mist and Repo Man, where hillbilly werewolves meet Hindu mythology.

It was a little over a year ago that we first heard about Dennis Willman's new comic series Ginger-Stein: Rise of the Undead, and now that the first issue is about to launch on Tuesday, October 11th, we have a lot more details and an image gallery to share.

On October 11th artistic mastermind Dennis Willman reveals his newest creation, Ginger-Stein, to the world. Ginger-Stein is the title of a multimedia horror/sci-fi project that is written, created, and illustrated by Willman and is unlike anything the horror audience has ever seen.
Ginger-Stein: Rise of the Undead is the first in a set of six comic book mini-series featuring horror’s hottest new heroine. The story and artwork are deeply rooted in 1980’s horror and sci-fi nostalgia. The violence is over-the-top, and like any good 80’s horror story, there’s sex, drugs, and a breaking of...

Where could this mesmerizing photo come from?
The answer exists and Joe has it below. But, first, just look at this magical image. Just look at it!
So…from where could this evocatively arty still originate?
Surely it’s a Euro Art Film!
Is it…Last Year at Desert Rock by the Italian auteur Giacomo Arnoldo?
Well… no. But almost.
It’s actually a memorable visual from a 100% Amurkan Hollywood movie– Jack Arnold’s 1953 3-D classic It Came from Outer Space.
I was fortunate enough to get to know Jack during the 70s, as his daughter Susan was the casting director of Piranha, The Howling and Gremlins. She had also acted for her dad (along with Piranha star Belinda Balaski) in the Fred Williamson vehicle Black Eye as well as Al Adamson’s The Female Bunch. Truth be known, I had kind of a crush on Susan during Piranha, but...

The Howling Favorite werewolf movie? A sub-genre in the horror field that doesn't get enough movies if you ask me! When we do get something, it can be absolutely amazing and fully of creativity like The Company of Wolves. However, that didn't make my top pick. Or it's something that's competently made, but just completely bland and by the numbers like Bad Moon. Or even worse, we get stuck with films like Wolves on Wall Street which forget to indulge viewers in some werewolf action to begin with! So what film was my top pick for werewolf film?
That distinction belongs to The Howling. Not only is The Howling my favorite werewolf movie of all time, it is my #2 favorite horror film of the 80's (behind my favorite...

Oh, he also produced all three, worked with the writers on the scripts and even pitched the projects to investors. Like many directors today, when you call something a "Corman film", it’s because he’s influenced the project from the start.

A group of scientists arrive on a remote Pacific island to study the effects of fallout from recent nuclear testing in the Pacific. They also want to discover what happened to the first team, which disappeared without a trace.
