[about the role of publicity in the silent-film era] I don't know of any publicity that was truthful in those days. I was the first press agent for Warner Brothers and I knew no more about it than you know how to fly a jumbo jet. But anything I wrote and sent to the papers, they'd print. They'd print anything that had to do with movie stars. Ninety percent of it was manufactured.
