Doctor Who TV movie writer Matthew Jacobs has reunited with Paul McGann for a new Big Finish audio story.
To date, Paul McGann’s total screen time as the Doctor clocks in at under two hours, and the majority of that can be credited to screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who penned the 1996 TV Movie. Though it’s perhaps not the most beloved piece of Doctor Who media, most fans now acknowledge that it’s an important bridge between the classic series and the glossy sheen and higher production values of the revived show.
The film saw Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor land in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve 1999, before promptly being gunned down outside the Tardis. He regenerates into Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, and teams up with Doctor Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) to fight The Master, who’s taken over the body of a paramedic (Eric Roberts) and...

Screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who wrote Doctor Who: The Movie, plunges among fans of the sci-fi series to find out what makes Time Lord diehards tick
When Matthew Jacobs’s name is first displayed on screen in this likable documentary, he is identified as a “mid-level screenwriter”; it’s more of a self-deprecating description than a diss given that he is one of the film’s co-directors (along with Vanessa Yuille) as well as the feature’s star subject. But his filmography is a mixed bag, and includes several things you may never have heard of (Bar America and the cartoon Justin and the Knights of Valour), little remembered reworkings of established works, the original story for one of Disney’s least popular works (The Emperor’s New Groove), the film adaptation for one stone-cold British cult classic, and the script for 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I’ll watch any good documentary even if I am not interested in the subject matter. Which leads me to see this documentary on the writer of the 1996 Doctor Who movie, Doctor Who Am I. It’s not that I’ve never seen Doctor Who, or that I dislike it at all. I’m just not that bothered by it. I’ve watched it every now and then throughout my life and it’s usually fine but I’ve never stuck with it. But, after a quick read of this movie’s synopsis I was certain I would enjoy it.

Award-winning Doctor Who doc “Doctor Who Am I” has been snapped up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, Variety can exclusively reveal.
Kaleidoscope are set to release “Doctor Who Am I” theatrically in the U.K. in October and are also repping international sales. Materials will be available to view at TIFF next month.
Marking Vanessa Yuille directorial debut, the documentary feature tells the story of the infamous 1996 “Doctor Who” TV film, which was produced during a gap in the TV series. It featured Paul McGann as the Time Lord but received disapprobation from fans, who were apparently unhappy at the suggestion the Doctor was half human, especially when he kissed his assistant Grace Holloway.
Matthew Jacobs wrote the standalone “Doctor Who” film and, in “Doctor Who Am I,” he reluctantly allows himself to be drawn back into the time period to examine the making of the production as well the reaction it inspired.

Had things gone differently, Peter Capaldi could have played the Doctor instead of Paul McGann all the way back in 1996...
Peter Capaldi has revealed that he turned down the chance to audition for the role of the Doctor back in 1996.
Speaking today at a London event celebrating next week’s launch of Doctor Who Series 8 on DVD, Capaldi told interviewer Frank Skinner and an audience of fans:
“I knew I wouldn’t get it. I loved the show so much that I didn’t want to have anything to do with it unless it was going to be me. I didn’t want to have the disappointment and go through all the palaver of jumping through hoops for something that I would never get. Because I knew it was an American pilot, and I knew they would go for somebody who was well-known - which Paul was, and he was fantastic.

The 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, "The Day of the Doctor," aired on Saturday. The show's mythology explains that the Doctor has the power to regenerate himself, hence his habit of appearing as a new person periodically. Journey with us down memory lane - or perhaps to a different dimension - as we look back at every actor who's stepped inside the Tardis throughout the show's tenure. Allons-y! First Doctor: William Hartnell, 1963-1966The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) later refers to the First as "the grumpy one." The Doctor was also played by Peter Cushing, of Hammer horror film fame,...

Dr. Grace Holloway
Portrayed by: Daphne Ashbrook
Doctor(s): Eighth Doctor
Tenure: 1 story, Doctor Who: the Movie (referred to by some as “The Enemy Within”)
Background: Dr. Grace Holloway is a cardiovascular surgeon in San Francisco. She has a strained relationship with her live-in boyfriend, due to her constantly being constantly either at work or on call. When she has to leave Madama Butterfly during the start of the second act, this is the last straw; he’s moved out by the time she gets home, with the newly regenerated Doctor in tow (he’s the patient she’s called in to do surgery on).
Family/Friends: We know very little about Grace, aside from her profession and her romantic status, and nothing about her family.
Personality: Grace is hardworking, determined, and focused. She has a love of culture and whimsy, quickly being swept into the Doctor’s struggle against the Master,...

Welcome to my Big Finish mega-review for the month of July! I’m also including one June release, since I wasn’t able to listen to it until just this month. Enjoy!
Companion Chronicles 8.01 – “Mastermind”
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The Vault – an archive of alien artefacts securely stored deep beneath the Angel of the North.
There’s also a prisoner in the Vault. An extraterrestrial known as the Master. He has been on Earth for some time, but now he’s under lock and key.
This is his story.
Or, as Captain Ruth Matheson and Warrant Officer Charlie Sato discover… perhaps it is theirs.
Starring: Geoffrey Beevers (The Master), Daphne Ashbrook (Ruth Matheson), Yee Jee Tso (Charlie Sato)
This is easily the best audio this month, and one of the best Companion Chronicles stories period. The story itself revisits the Unit vault, previously seen a few chronicles ago, and brings...

This is a big weekend for Whovians in the U.S with the Gallifrey One convention (#gally) taking place in La.
In it’s 23rd year this convention is pretty much as official as it gets ‘across the pond’ (no Pond intended) and has seen a huge swell of interest thanks to the intense promotional work and focus on American Who fandom since we first saw The Impossible Astronaut in 2011.
While not an “official” convention like the one to be held in Cardiff in late March, this one is crammed with guests that will interest both classic and current series fans (thought not Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as they are the primary focus of the official convention). Firstly, the day is being billed as a 1996 TV movie reunion with 8th Doctor Paul McGann reunited with Daphne Ashbrook, Yee Jee Tso, Eric Roberts and producer Philip Segal.
I wear a Fez now.

The 1990s were Doctor Who's very own Decadus Horriblus (thanks to the Basil Brush Book of Latin for this). Up until 1990, Doctor Who had carved itself a niche in the BBC schedules, usually to worldwide applause, high ratings and positive critical feedback.
And then it all went horribly wrong.
By the mid-1980s, Doctor Who was starting to get out of its depth as a result of a misunderstood Doctor, over-complicated plots and a dash of violence. Cue an extended holiday; but on its return, its reputation was still in tatters. Despite a bold attempt to re-invent itself as a confident, clever show of mystery, the BBC bosses weren't impressed. And so the axe fell, leaving the faithful mob of Doctor Who fans to wait and wonder.
But don't forget – TV programming had radically changed in the 1990s in a number of ways. For one thing, there was an...
