ESPN and Stephen A. Smith are close to hammering out a new contract that will give the popular Disney sports personality potential access to other parts of the Magic Kingdom.
The two sides, who have been in negotiations for several months, are said to be hopeful they can reach a deal over the next several weeks, according to a person familiar with the situation. ESPN and Disney have been in talks with Smith to devise a new pact that could involve creating a sort of “first-look” agreement for Smith-backed concepts across Disney’s general-entertainment properties, according to this person and a second familiar with the talks.
A representative for ESPN declined to comment. WME, the agency that represents Smith, was not able to offer immediate comment.
Should the deal come to fruition, it would represent the latest in ESPN’s efforts to sign top talent to its roster. In recent years,...

If he can’t beat them, ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro is still willing to do business with them.
A creative deal that will bring what is perhaps America’s favorite sports studio show to Disney after years of it airing on Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT spotlights a growing willingness at ESPN to take a “curation” approach to game-day concepts and content. Some of the biggest deals at ESPN in recent years aren’t ones that start new formats or series, but rather the type that make ESPN a perch for sports personalities who have already proven popular somewhere else.
The new pact, unveiled formally Monday after leaking over the weekend, makes “Inside the NBA” an ESPN property as far as fans are concerned. To be sure, Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports will continue to produce the show from Atlanta over the term of the pact, which commences with the 2025-26 NBA season.

Bart Simpson may soon have a new catchphrase in his repertoire: “Don’t have a Cowboy, man.”
The Walt Disney Co., the NFL and ESPN and teaming up to debut another animated alternative broadcast of an upcoming NFL game, but this time they are going big with “ESPN’s The Simpsons Funday Football.”
On Dec. 9, Disney+ and ESPN+ will stream the Dallas Cowboys-Cincinnati Bengals matchup, but it will take place in Springfield’s Atoms Stadium, with all the players replaced by dozens of animated characters based on those from the Fox and Disney+ series The Simpsons.
It will be the second year in a row that Disney+ will stream an animated version of an NFL game, but this year’s game will be bigger on multiple fronts: For starters, it is a Monday Night Football matchup, not a Sunday morning game like last year’s Toy Story game.

During the Kansas City Chiefs’ game Monday night, the former Cowboys quarterback and ESPN commentator Troy Aikman incorrectly described Taylor Swift as “the Mrs.” in reference to her relationship with Travis Kelce.
After the camera cut to Swift following a play by Travis in the second quarter, Aikman said, “The Mrs. likes it” as she celebrated with Travis’ dad Ed during the broadcast. His fellow broadcaster, Joe Buck, later corrected Aikman, saying, “You know they’re not married?”
“Oh, I know,” Aikman replied. “I’m sure I’m in trouble for saying that.

The 2024 season opener for “Monday Night Football” averaged 20.5 million viewers across ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and NFL+.
The San Francisco 49ers’ win against the New York Jets marked the program’s second-most-watched Week 1 match-up in the program’s 19 seasons on ESPN, beating the 19.8 million viewers who tuned in to watch the 2022 match-up between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks.
Still, viewership for the Sept. 9 game came in lower than last year’s face-off between the Buffalo Bills and the Jets, which holds the record for the most-watched Week 1 game at 22.7 million viewers. The slight ratings dip coincides with DirecTV’s more than 11 million subscribers currently being unable to access Disney’s linear networks due to a carriage dispute.

Stephen A. Smith is riled up. Sort of. During a mid-July call from his New Jersey home, the conversation turns to labels and he’s suddenly yelling into the receiver: “I’m not a podcaster! I just happen to be doing a podcast.” The combative orator of ESPN morning flagship First Take and, yes, his eponymous podcast leans into his persona, but also sheds it just as quickly. “I’m sorry, could you hold on? My daughter’s giving me an ugly look,” he says, his tone changing as he turns his attention to one of his two children. “Daddy just has to finish this.”
Then he’s back to his thunderous monologue, the kind that has helped propel Smith to the upper echelon of sports media. His 2019 contract extension with ESPN made him the highest-paid talent in network history. And while his salary has since been eclipsed by Troy Aikman,...

Charles Barkley is blocking Warner Bros. Discovery’s drive to the net.
The basketball legend added a new wrinkle to Warner’s ongoing efforts to retain media rights to the NBA late Friday evening by announcing he would retire from his announcing duties on “Inside the NBA,” the influential TNT program he has co-hosted for years.

ESPN ran a promotional campaign in the mid-2000s called “Without Sports” that posited the world would be less interesting and less connected in the absence of athletic competition (and, of course, ESPN’s exhaustive coverage of it).
The 2024 version of that campaign might go something like, “Without sports, would anyone be watching cable?” The answer is yes — but in far smaller numbers than in a landscape where live sports are abundantly available via cable and satellite providers.
Nielsen’s seven-day ratings for the 2023-24 TV season show sports dominating the top of the rankings among all viewers and the key ad-sales demographic of adults 18-49. In total viewers, live sports telecasts — led by ESPN’s Monday Night Football with 7.38 million viewers (not including simulcasts on ABC) — capture nine of the top 10 spots and 12 of the top 20 among primetime cable shows, counting titles with at least three telecasts. Fresh from being roasted on Netflix, Tom Brady turned up to the Fox Upfronts.
Suited and booted, Brady discovered that he’ll be calling a game involving the Dallas Cowboys – the first time in five years that Fox is opening with a Dallas game.
“I know how important the Cowboys are to this network,” Brady said.
“I love being part of that Fox family,” Brady said. “Walking out of my first meeting with Fox, it reminded me of my amazing teammates. To be part of the game I love, to be part of the greatest telecast in football every single week, ultimately made my decision.”
Standing next to Michael Strahan, Brady joked that it’s “nice when you’re not hitting me”. He added that he didn’t do so well next to Strahan, whose New York Giants beat Brady’s New England Patriots twice in the Super Bowl.

Wade Bowen never stopped pouring his heart out in his songs. What’s different about him after 25-plus years of music is the amount of joy in those pours.
“We’re having so much fun playing music, we’re having so much fun writing songs and recording,” Bowen tells Rolling Stone. “I feel like we’re in this amazing groove right now, and I feel like we need to keep the pedal down.”
Bowen is talking about Flyin, his latest record, out now. But he is also talking about his world at the moment.

The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.
Key Details: NBC has offered $2.5 billion...

Jason Kelce has landed at ESPN.
The former Philadelphia Eagles center has signed with the Disney-owned sports giant to work on its Monday Night Countdown NFL pregame show, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Kelce’s landing pad has been one of the hottest questions of the NFL offseason, with multiple TV partners pursuing him.
Kelce participated in last year’s NFL broadcast boot camp, where the league helps train current and former players in the ins and outs of broadcasting. Kelce was seen as a star performer in that boot camp.
Monday Night Countdown, the pregame show for ESPN Monday Night Football, already has a top-shelf talent list, including Scott Van Pelt, Robert Griffin III and Larry Fitzgerald. During the games themselves, ESPN has Joe Buck and Troy Aikman leading the main broadcast, with Peyton and Eli Manning leading an alternative telecast.

Sports broadcaster ESPN saw nearly 32 million viewers tune in for its Saturday match-up between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans, making it the most-watched non-championship National Football League (NFL) game ever aired on the network.
It was the second consecutive year that ESPN — jointly owned between the Walt Disney Company and Hearst Television — broke its own viewership record with a divisional playoff game, the network said in a statement on Monday.
The 31.767 million viewers who tuned in surpassed last January’s match-up between the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The network said its viewership figure was based on preliminary Nielsen data, and it expects the number to surpass 32 million when finalized data is available.
Last Saturday’s game was broadcast on ESPN and the ABC television network, and streamed live through ESPN Plus and the NFL Plus app. Viewing peaked around 6:30 p.

One of the greatest plays in sports isn’t taking place on any athletic field.
Walt Disney Co. and the National Football League are said to be in earnest talks, according to two people familiar with the matter, that could have the league take a stake in ESPN while putting its NFL Media unit, which the sports body has been trying to monetize in better fashion, under the media company’s control. Such a move would further align Disney with the NFL, making it difficult for the company to lose valuable sports rights to show top-rated football games, and could put such NFL assets as the NFL Network and RedZone under Disney’s aegis.
Disney and the NFL declined to comment on the talks, which were reported previously by The New York Post and The Atlantic. Disney has been seeking partners for ESPN as it faces declines in one of...

“I’m told the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen,” Monday Night Football’s Joe Buck said on the ABC broadcast tonight. In the background just after, you could hear the stadium crowd react to the footage being shown onscreen.
“Yeah, we’re not going to show it. It’s as bad as you can imagine,” replied analyst Troy Aikman.
Chubb, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back, was on a short run near the end zone when he was hit low by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and went down at the 3 yard line. He immediately grabbed his left leg and took off his helmet. You can see the play below, without the gruesome close-up.
Joe Buck: "I am told that the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen."
The groan from the Pittsburgh crowd probably tells us all we need to know.

America’s Team and the world’s largest streaming service seem like a match made in heaven. Now they’re a match made on Earth as well, as Puck News reports Netflix has won the bidding for rights to a new docuseries featuring the Dallas Cowboys and their billionaire owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
Netflix had to beat out sports giant ESPN to secure the rights, and will pay $50 million to stream the series. It will feature never-before-seen footage, as well as interviews from Cowboys legends like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin. Those who have screened the series already have given it favorable comparisons to “The Last Dance,” the docuseries featuring Michael Jordan’s run with the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls.

In an upfront week otherwise marked by smaller-scale events, and a lack of star power on stage, Disney threw everything it had (short of any actors) in an expansive upfront presentation Tuesday afternoon.
And that included dozens of stunt performers dressed as samurai engaging in combat in the aisles. But we’ll get back to that.
In a cavernous hall in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, on an enormous stage that took some talent a full minute to walk across, Disney touted every single one of its brands, from ESPN and ABC to FX and Disney+, to Marvel and Lucasfilm.
And while there may not have been any actors, the company included every star it could secure, from ESPN talent like Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Hannah Storm and (their soon-to-be-colleague) Pat McAfee, to ABC News anchors David Muir, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan (24 hours after he appeared...

Disney’s annual upfront presentation leaned heavily on the company’s non-scripted programming, opening with nearly an hour of focus on ESPN and its sports offerings. The emphasis on live events, of course, comes as the writers strike continues and is expected to impact the fall TV season.

Inside the Javits, sports and news stars from within Disney were out in force, while reality personalities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Jesse Palmer and Ryan Seacrest made appearances as well. Even Wabc-tv New York anchors Sade Baderinwa and Bill Ritter got some time onstage.

Skydance Sports, NFL Films and the Jerry Jones family are collaborating on what they call a “defining” docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and the arc of Jones as the owner and builder of the franchise over 30-plus years.
As president and general manager, Jones is credited with engineering a massive turnaround that led to three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s. While the Lombardi Trophy has remained out of reach during the past quarter-century-plus, Jones and his family have shepherded the rise of the Cowboys to the status of the most valuable franchise in professional sports.
Using never-before-seen footage from the NFL Films archive, the as-yet-untitled series will trace Jones’ rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to the top of the pro sports heap. Interviews will feature ex-Cowboys players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders; former head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer...

Football legend Tom Brady plans to start his sportscasting duties for Fox in the fall of 2024, the retired athlete revealed during an interview Monday of Fox Sports 1.
Brady’s arrival had previously been uncertain, particularly after he announced his retirement at the end of the NFL’s 2022 season, then reneged.
He is expected to call NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, the Fox Sports announcer whose role was recently elevated after the exit of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
Brady “will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives,” Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch told investors in May of last year.
Brady’s hire represents the latest in a flurry of big talent changes for major football broadcasts. All the TV networks with NFL rights are looking to woo bigger audiences...

John Madden, the ex-coach and broadcaster who became synonymous with Thanksgiving thanks to his turkey leg awards to star players, will be honored by the NFL this year with several commemorative features.
With his telestrator and his penchant for yelling “Boom!” after a big play, Madden was as much a part of the Thanksgiving holiday as a family gathering.
Madden died at age 85 last year, and the National Football League is going to reflect on his lasting contributions with the “John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration.” The league hopes for the event to mark the start of another holiday tradition, offering special Madden segments on the day’s broadcasts by CBS, Fox, and NBC.
Madden was more than a broadcaster. He was also a Pro Football Hall of Fame member as the former coach of the Oakland Raiders. From there, he moved to broadcasting, where his exuberant style made every game interesting.

Up against former teammate Russell Wilson and his new Denver Broncos crew, the Seattle Seahawks desperately wanted a win last night at home.
With a 17-16 result on Monday Night Football, they got one — and so did ESPN, ABC and the NFL.
In one for the books, last night’s primetime gridiron matchup in Jet City was watched by 19.9 million viewers.
To capture the magnitude of that Monday audience, Mnf’s viewership was 236 greater than the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards over on NBC at the same time. In fact, while the Emmys hit an all-time low, the ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes broadcast game has proven to be the third-most-watched Mnf since 2009. The Seahawks’ win over Denver and Wilson also was the fourth-most-viewed NFL regular season game ever on the Disney-owned sports cabler.
