Stars: Joe Wilkinson, Laura Aikman, Jane Asher | Written and Directed by Warren Fischer
I always like to give British comedy a go because, in amongst plenty of poor shows and films has been a whole lot of great stuff. British comedy often feels a little bit different from many other countries, so with A Family Affair and debut writer and director Warren Fischer, I was hoping for the new British comedy director to take the World by storm. The story goes like this:
“A cash-strapped hotel manager (Joe Wilkinson) is forced to stave off interest from wealthy buyers at a public auction whilst hosting his in-laws on their wedding anniversary.”
I was also glad to see Joe Wilkinson on the cast list, and he does indeed play one of the main roles as Edward. After previously enjoying his work on Him and Her, and Ricky Gervais’ Derek and After Life,...

Actors as gifted as Jane Asher and Joe Wilkinson can’t do much with jokes about a failing guest house 40 years past their use-by date
A car door opens; the elderly gent in the driver’s seat has popped a pill for erectile dysfunction (brand name Super Stallion). He’s at his son’s guest house to scatter the ashes of his wife – and he’s brought along a date, a gorgeous young blonde (“she’s my carer”). The pill has worked its magic, so as the man gets out of the car, he reaches for a jacket to cover the bulge in his trousers. At this point you half expect a blast of canned laughter. But this is not a sitcom from 1986, even though the script contains the same tired gags and stereotypes that should have died long ago.

"Today better go off without a hitch." Strike Media has revealed an official trailer for a British indie comedy titled A Family Affair, made by filmmaker Warren Fischer who coms from South Africa. This is set to debut in the UK first on VOD this May, after originally opening on VOD in South Africa back in February this year. It's only 72 minutes! A financially distressed guest house manager is forced to stave off interest from wealthy buyers at a public auction while hosting his in-laws for their wedding anniversary and his own difficult father on the same weekend. Starring Joe Wilkinson, Laura Aikman, and Jane Asher. "On a superficial level, the film is a farcical romp but at its core, this is a story about love, loss, reconciliation and the complexities of family." There's still no US release set yet, though it'll probably end up on VOD at some point this year.

A film release we’ve been eagerly awaiting here at Dn, director Sam Baron concludes his joyous tragicomedy shorts trilogy starring Amit Shah with Tall Dark and Handsome. Beginning with The Orgy and then followed by Big Ears, all three films delve into a shared exploration of modern masculinity and the fragility that lies within with humour, nuance and a sensitivity you might not expect from the comedy genre. Tall Dark and Handsome, co-written by Shah, examines the complexity of identities, drawing upon both the writer/actor’s experiences in cross-cultural relationships and the insecurities that can sometimes arise. We invited Baron back to Directors Notes the speak to us about Shah’s intricate and detailed approach to the script which ensured every word served the story, his love of using comedy to explore some of the more complex and difficult issues in our lives and incorporating a darker more...

Fittingly for a series in which everybody seems to be engaging in some form of Classic Hollywood cosplay, the Rosebud moment in BritBox’s Archie is delivered by an actor playing comedy icon Danny Kaye.
Affecting a stereotypical German therapist accent — accents on top of accents on top of accents is the Archie way — Kaye cautions young Dyan Cannon (Laura Aikman) that her relationship with the more seasoned Cary Grant (Jason Isaacs) is destined for complications with the warning, “Men who have difficult relationships with their mothers always carry it over to the women that they love.”
There’s no reason for Kaye to make such an observation if he hasn’t been watching the two previous hours of Jeff Pope’s four-episode production. But for the series’ actual audience, his analysis will come across as both obvious and superficial — a bit like Archie itself.
Ultimately, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Though the CW is beginning to pivot much more heavily to reality fare, with “All American” as the only original scripted series on its fall 2023 lineup, the network has added three new scripted projects to its slate for 2024: “Joan,” “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” and “The Swarm.” Additionally, 2024 will see the premieres of unscripted series “Patti Stanger: Millionaire Matchmaking,” “The Force” and “The Great American Bakeover” (all working titles).
All newly announced series are currently in production.
“Joan” stars Sophie Turner (“Game of Thrones”) as Joan Hannington, the notorious real-life jewel thief. Set in 1980s London, the series sees Joan as a devoted mother to her six-year-old daughter, Kelly, while trapped in a disastrous marriage with a violent criminal named Gary. When Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the opportunity to adopt new identities and embark on a high-stakes journey to create a new life for herself and Kelly.

Warning: contains The Rising spoilers.
The Rising is filled with all the twists and turns viewers have come to expect from a murder mystery drama. Adapted from Belgian crime thriller Beau Séjour, The Rising is set in small town in the British countryside, with sweeping landscapes and a thriving motocross community. The extra supernatural twist in this particular mystery is that its central character Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) is dead from the start, but for some reason remains on earth. She can be seen and heard by a select few, and with their help, she’s determined to figure out who murdered her and why. In this eight-episode Sky series, the first six instalments are spent making discoveries and following false leads. The show pulls no punches, and takes you on an emotional journey where no-one, for the most part, is presented as either entirely good or bad until the killer is revealed.

The amazing Karen David certainly has had a busy 2013. The actress was seen in the Us Television show Castle in a two part episode, then she filmed for the upcoming UK production Amar, Akbar & Tony. Her upcoming Ep Dust to Stars comes out on the 23rd so putting on her singing avatar she shot the videos for the tracks, planned a concert tour for the album, then back to her acting hat auditioned and won the part in a play in California and Oh Yeah… in the middle of all of that got married! As she says it has been manic but she loves it! During a little break, we were able catch up with Karen to find out more about her work on the film and her upcoming album! The interview was more a conversation and was so fabulous and well… long we had to divide it into two parts!

Bula Quo! is a fictional feature length film about British rock and roll duo Status Quo who, when on tour in Fiji, find themselves fighting for their lives having been caught up in a gangland murder operation in which they are prime suspects. Seriously. This is a real film. Oh and guess what, there’s already been a sequel announced.
Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt have been in the entertainment industry for an incredible 50 years, however there is nothing that can prepare them for their upcoming tour of Fiji, as they are scheduled to perform to thousands of adoring fans. With their publicity and security assistants Simon (Craig Fairbrass) and Caroline (Laura Aikman) running around after them like headless chickens, there is little anybody can do to prevent the ageing pair witnessing a callous murder, at the hands of local crime-lord Wilson (Jon Lovitz). With the law enforcement suspecting it...
