If Jared Pedalecki and Jensen Ackles were the heartthrobs of The CW, Mark Pedowitz was its heartbeat.
When Nexstar announced its completed acquisition of (75 percent of) The CW on Monday, it installed board member Dennis Miller, a venture capitalist with executive stints at Sony, Lionsgate, and Turner, as the broadcast network’s new president. Pedowitz, who was chairman and CEO of the youth-skewing broadcast network for the past 11 years is out; he’ll stay in the game via the revival of his former production company.
Though The CW never quite soared like so many of its DC superheroes, the decade-plus under Pedowitz had its moments — and its misses. IndieWire looks back on both below.
With additional reporting by Erin Strecker, Christian Blauvelt, Ben Travers, and Kristen Lopez.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Hollywood has come together to make a change over the portrayal of gun violence onscreen.
Judd Apatow, Mark Ruffalo, Jimmy Kimmel, Damon Lindelof, Adam McKay, Julianne Moore, Shonda Rhimes, Eli Roth, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Schumer, and John Glickman are among the first round of signatures for a petition calling for the film and TV industry to re-examine its influence on national gun violence in the U.S.
The petition, titled “Open Letter to Our Colleagues in the Creative Community,” calls for studios to model responsible gun safety practices in productions and curb portrayals of guns in scenes involving children. The effort, led by activists Christy Callahan, the co-chair of the Brady United Against Gun Violence organization’s Regional Leadership Council, and Robert Bowers Disney, comes after the Uvalde elementary school mass shooting on May 24.
“Considering there have been over 250 other mass shootings so far this year, it’s an almost incomprehensible tragedy.

According to the creative team behind Glee, Naya Rivera‘s contribution to the Fox phenom can best be summed up in one word: Brittana.

The CW’s longest-running superhero series is about to meet its end as the network said today that it has just one final season of Arrow in its quiver. The DC Comics show starring Stephen Amell will wrap with its upcoming 10-episode eighth season. Launch a photo gallery celebrating the series’ history by clicking on the photo above.
Since Arrow premiered on October 10, 2012, the CW has launched three other superhero series that make up its “Arrowverse”: The Flash (2014), which began as a spinoff from Arrow; Supergirl (2015), whose first season aired on sister net CBS; and the superhero team-up series Legends of Tomorrow (2016). All of their worlds have collided in various crossover events over the years. The network also premiered DC-based Black Lightning in early 2018, but the CW president Mark Pedowich emphasized at TCA that it was not affiliated with the Arrowverse and wouldn’t be part of future crossover episodes.

In the aftermath of the #MeToo movement, Hollywood has taken notice, with much more of an emphasis not only on female filmmakers but female characters —Supergirl, we're talking to you — as well. In the world of superheroes, Marvel has certainly made great strides with the likes of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow in various Avengers films, Zoe Saldana as Gamorra in Guardians of the Galaxy, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, aka Wasp, in Ant-Man and the Wasp; and next year's Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson in the title role. And over at DC, there has been Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, the sequel to which is filming now, and, of course, Supergirl. Supergirl was created in 1959 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. Journalist Louis Black, who knew Otto well, comments to us, "One would be hard-pressed to argue that Otto was a feminist, but that having more...

Well, it looks like the arrival of new big bad Reign won’t be the only significant addition to the third season of Supergirl. As it turns out, some new blood will be given creative control over the series, which we can only hope will prolong the its success.
Truth be told, the “new blood” we speak of is already familiar to you all, but they’ve been given a huge promotion. By that, we mean executive producer Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, who’s been freshly promoted to executive producer herself, will be taking on greater roles going forward as they’ll be standing alongside Andrew Kreisberg as co-showrunners for the coming year.
This shift in personnel comes after co-developer and previous co-showrunner Ali Adler has decided to pursue other challenges at CBS TV Studios. Still, the show is in good hands and the decision seems quite natural given...

Roulette certainly has been busy since we last saw her.
Formerly the organizer of an underground fight club for metahumans, Dichen Lachman’s character returns in Supergirl‘s Jan. 23 episode (The CW, 8/7c) as the leader of a trafficking ring on a distant planet known as Slaver’s Moon. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the planet boasts a red sun, leaving Kara and Mon-El at Roulette’s mercy, as you’ll see in a new batch of photos released by the network on Tuesday.

The midseason finale of Supergirl left us with a lot of unanswered questions, including what exactly Mon-El is up to. While he’s claimed to be the servant to the Prince of Daxam, many fans believe that he’s actually a member of the now destroyed planet’s royal family, hence why aliens are heading to Earth to track him down.
In a recent interview, Supergirl executive producer Ali Adler promised that we’re going to get some “definitive answers” in regards to what Mon-El is hiding and why exactly he’s claiming not to remember “that almost unsatisfying kiss” he shared with Kara Danvers. What that means for her chances of romance remains to be seen, but Adler adds:
“We’ll explore more of that relationship. Kara still has to figure out how she feels about him.”

Supergirl has something of a villain problem. Season 1’s big bad (Kara’s aunt) was hugely underwhelming, and while Cadmus has fared a little better, there’s a lot the show could learn from Arrow and The Flash. However, it now appears as if we can expect to see some improvement as two of the Girl of Steel’s past foes look set to return next year.
We’re talking about are Metallo (Frederick Schmidt) and Livewire (Brit Morgan). The former has already made a couple of appearances in Supergirl; first, she targeted Cat Grant, but the electrically charged villain later teamed up with Silver Banshee to battle Kara and Earth-1’s Flash after he inadvertently ended up on her world.
Metallo, on the other hand, appeared in the first two episodes of season 2 where he could be seen squaring off with both Supergirl and her cousin Superman. One of...

Chaos is coming to National City when Supergirl returns next year as TV Line has confirmed that two fan-favourite villains will be making their return to The CW series. First up is Metallo (Frederick Schmidt), a Kryptonite powered baddie who squared off with both Kara Danvers and her cousin Superman in the two-part season premiere at the behest of the villainous organisation Cadmus. Another familiar face also set to return is Brit Morgan's Livewire. The character targeted Cat Danvers during the show's first season, but later returned to take on both the Girl of Steel and The Flash alongside Silver Banshee. Story details have not been revealed about why these villains resurface, but seeing as Supergirl has struggled in this area, fleshing out some familiar faces is a really good idea. Executive producer Ali Adler also tells the site that other "fan-favourite" villains will reappear this season, but wouldn't say any more than that.

Last week's trailer for Supergirl season 2 caught the attention of many fans with the casual line, "We're moving back to Gotham." While obviously meant as a small tease to the wider universe now that Superman has made his debut on the network, fans couldn't help but wonder if we could see Batman down the line as well. TV Line caught up with executive producer Allison Adler to ask if there were any new plans on bringing the Dark Knight to the show. “I feel like we have our hands full with the crossover we’re shooting right now,” Adler said, referring to the four show event happening later this fall (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow). “I think people will be satisfied with how much crossover they’re getting this season. We have this beautiful history with DC, and I like that we get to borrow from this amazing,...

For years, women fought to work behind the camera, especially in the television world, while the Hollywood system balked. But this fall, there’s real evidence that change is coming, thanks to the industry embracing a simple two-step process:
1) You acknowledge the problem.
2) You do something about it.
By “doing something about it,” that very specifically means giving women a real chance to prove themselves behind the camera. Because every time they get it, it leads to additional opportunities.
This year, FX dug into this issue unlike perhaps any other network on television, courtesy of what network president John Landgraf called “a good, swift, well-deserved kick in the butt” from Variety’s Maureen Ryan. The TV critic last year broke down the demographics for directors working in TV and found that 88 percent of FX Networks episodes last season were directed by white men.

Who would have thought that so many geeks’ dreams would become reality on the small screen rather than the big? I guess it’s highly appropriate that The Flash be the subject of so much of the talk coming out of the TCA press tour. After all, whenever there’s a major shakeup in the DC Universe, whomever is donning the Scarlet Speedster costume can usually be found at its epicenter.
By now, many of you know that the “Flashpoint” story arc will be adapted early on in the season. As I assumed, it won’t take up too much time so that everyone can get back to business as usual – for the most part. Speaking at the TCAs this week, CW president Mark Pedowitz confirmed my suspicions with the following statement (via Comic Book Movie):
“The Flashpoint exercise is only for a couple episodes before it comes back in.
