Daniella Alonzo isn’t returning for the second season of NBC’s “The Night Shift.”

Alonzo’s role as the night shift’s lone psychiatrist, Dr. Landry De La Cruz, won’t continue amid a change in creative direction on Season 2.

“We’re opening up and getting more surgery and more of the paramedic world,” executive producer Jeff Judah said during Friday’s Television Critics Association press tour panel for the show.

Steve Martin is in negotiations with Disney to star in a family comedy called Magic Camp that he co-wrote with Stu Zicherman, the writer and director of A.C.O.D. I am a huge fan of Martin, and I enjoy his writing style. The original script was written by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, who also wrote Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

According to THR, the story tells of "a straitlaced banker who returns to Magic Camp, which he attended as a shy child. This time he is a counselor who makes it his mission to improve the lives of all the kids while keeping an eye on his ultimate prize, the top spot at the Golden Wand competition."

This is the perfect project for Martin, as one of his early jobs was working at Merlin's Magic Shop at Disneyland. He was also a magician in his early days as a comedian.

Fans of Steven Martin may recall that the comedian and actor has a history with Disney in more ways than one. Martin has starred in Shopgirl (which he also wrote), Bringing Down the House and two Father of the Bride films (a third has been rumored but debunked by the actor himself), all from Touchstone Pictures, which can be found under the Disney banner. Years ago at the Ledger, I did an occasional feature called "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words" where, in lieu of writing a review of some terrible show or TV-movie, I would simply select a publicity still that in some way captured its terribleness, thus allowing me to devote my time to writing about something better. With NBC's new hospital drama "The Night Shift" (it premieres tonight at 10), I was sorely tempted to revive that tradition because... well, look at that picture attached to this review. That is perhaps the single most terrible publicity photo I have ever seen for a television show. Worse than anything associated with "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer," worse than the "girls club" image that made its stars look like they were appearing on the cover of a pornographic VHS tape. Earth to Roswell fans: The Atx Television Festival is staging a 15-year anniversary reunion with stars Shiri Appleby, Nick Wechsler, Brendan Fehr, and Roswell creator Jason Katims this June.

The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.

None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.

Robert Bailey Jr. has joined the cast of NBC’s hour-long medical drama pilot, After Hours, which follows the lives of workers during the graveyard shift at the ER at San Antonio Medical Center. Bailey Jr. will play a character named Paul, described as a young, eager but squeamish resident at the hospital. He joins Brendan Fehr, Freddy Rodriguez, Jeananne Goossen, Eoin Macken and Ken Leung. Exclusive: Freddy Rodriguez is set as a lead in the hourlong NBC pilot After Hours. The Sony TV project, written/executive produced by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah and to be directed by Pierre Morel, revolves around the graveyard shift in the ER at San Antonio Medical Center. Rodriguez will play hospital administrator Michael Ragosa who is the new Comptroller for the Night Shift. A wannabe doctor who had to drop out of med school because of vision problems, Ragosa is a real bureaucrat for whom the bottom line seems to be everything. Rodriguez joins recently cast Eoin Macken. Rodriguez, repped by UTA and manager Robbie Kass, stars in the Weinstein Co.’s Seal Team 6, which premieres this Sunday on National Geographic. He recently wrapped a lead role in Randall Miller’s indie Cbgb. Rodriguez’s series credits include Ugly Betty and Chaos.

It centers on Tc Callahan (Macken), who has returned from the Army to practice his unorthodox brand of medicine, often butting heads with his superiors. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is back at the CW with Metropolis, a drama based on the 2000 British series. Thomas will write and executive produce the project, about a group of friends who are struggling with their adult lives not living up to the expectations they had when they were idealistic college friends. The original limited series, created by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) and produced by Granada TV, had an eight-episode run with a cast that included James Fox, Louise Lombard, James Purefoy and Matthew Rhys. The adaptation is being produced by Warner Bros TV, Rob Thomas Prods, ITV Studios America (formerly Granada America) and Littlefield Co, with Warren Littlefield and ITV’s Paul Buccieri executive producing. The deal for the pilot with producer Sony Pictures TV is currently being finalized. The untitled project is an ensemble medical show about a group of Army doctors who return to work the night shift together at a hospital in San Antonio. Referred to as After Hours or The Last Stand, the Sachs/Judah project was one of several medical dramas NBC put in development last season. It picked up two of them, County and the Jekyll & Hyde-themed Do No Harm, to pilot and one, Do No Harm, to series for midseason.
