Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have launched movie fans into excitement with the latest trailer for their new movie, “Barbie.” Gerwig directs the project and she also co-wrote the script with her partner Baumbach. Previously, both scored Oscar nominations in the same year for their work on “Little Women” (Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig) and “Marriage Story” (Original Screenplay for Baumbach). With “Barbie,” the pair of filmmakers could become the first couple to win an Oscar for the same feature film since 2018.
Gerwig and Baumbach would be up for Best Original Screenplay together, while Gerwig could also be up for Best Director, and both could be up for Best Picture (as producers). If they were to win together, they’d become the 19th couple to take home a pair of Oscars for the same movie.

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Stay Out, Stay Alive; now under the shorter title of Stay Out]
Another generic (and not very good) name for a low budget horror movie, so it’s fair to say that I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from Stay Out.
I’m glad to report though that this isn’t quite as generic as I expected and there is plenty of things to enjoy here. I was not surprised at all when I looked up director Dean Yurke and discovered that before this, his directorial début, he has worked a lot in visual effects and in big shows or films such as Loki, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and much much more. And it shows because despite a low budget the effects used here a very good on the whole. Clearly, they...

"Try as we may to make a silence, we cannot." An early teaser trailer has debuted for an intriguing, strange horror film project called Masking Threshold - which is a strange title for a horror film but it's also quite a unique title and that makes me happy to see. Made by Austrian filmmaker Johannes Grenzfurthner, the film is described as "a surreal study of dread" about an It worker performing experiments in his home lab. "Masking Threshold is a film about a suffering, stubborn person whose worldview and beliefs are turned on their head, whose dogmas come out against the world and himself.... It includes the urge for control, the reactionary fear of regression and decay and an almost Lovecraftian terror of contamination." The film stars Ethan Haslam, Katharina Rose, Ishan Raval, Kudra Owens, and David Fine. This trailer contains mostly close-up shots; but along with the poster art,...

For over 90 years, the Academy Awards has been the main source of accommodating those achievements with their illustrious golden statue and the prestige of being known as an "Academy Award-winner". For some, though, just being nominated is a special accolade, in and of itself.

There is no shortage of Canadian short films. Just ask Tiff Short Cuts programmers Lisa Haller and Jason Anderson. The duo sifted through the 789 Canadian titles with runtimes of 49 minutes or less in order to discover the 20 Canuck titles included in this year’s Short Cuts lineup.
In all 56 films – 20 Canadian titles and 36 international titles – will be featured in the Short Cuts program. The showcase is comprised of stories told in short form in various styles and genres including narrative, documentary, comedy and thriller.
It’s an exciting lineup that even caught the attention of Hollywood. Fox Searchlight has acquired two titles in the program: “Feathers”, directed by A.V. Rockwell, and “Birdie,” from Shelly Lauman. (an international premiere). “It’s largely unprecedented for a studio to venture into the shorts world like this and see this as an opportunity to support emerging filmmakers so we’re hugely excited,” Anderson said,...

Okay, so this week we have covered the "Top Five Indie Horror Films," with an article found here: Best Indie Horror Films of 2010. Also covered was the "Top Five International Horror Films." An article on this posting is here: Top Five International Films. But, now we are exploring a more depraved side of horror, or a lower class of film. This top five list will cover the "Worst Five Horror Films of 2010!"
This year, there was so much to choose from in poor horror films. Abroad, we have the dismal Basement starring Danny Dyer and Jimi Mistry to the absolutely monstrosity of a film from Australia called Outback aka Prey starring the incapable Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Domestically, films like the Zombie Chronicles: The Infected made this reviewer want to scratch his eyes out, while others like Apocalypse of the Dead aka Zone of the Dead made one reach for the off button with lightening like reflexes.

This short had an appearance in Cannes 2008, as part of the short film selection and "The Red Door" has gone onto win awards at Shockfest 2009 for Best Actor - David Fine, Best Film of the Festival, and others. Seriously surreal, this short starts off as serious hit of LSD to the system, warms to the audience with a psychotic monologue and finishes with a French dialogue about dissociation. Bognacki describes his film as a mix of Giallo and David Lynch; after seeing this film these words cannot be counter-argued, but the quality of the film can be enjoyed, as most of the senses are tickled.

The film has recently been completed and Stricken has toured several film festivals, including the Action on Film International Film Festival. Starring David Fine (Sensored) and Stephanie French, Stricken uses dark lighting, a foreboding atmosphere and Celtic mythology to tell a tale horror tale of curses and slaughter. Also, Stricken is important for showing that unfortunate events which effect the father or mother do not need to impact the offspring.

Poe Movie PosterDirector/writer: Francis Xavier.
Metropolis Pictures Entertainment is the production company behind the independent thriller Poe. The film creates some loose connections between the character Jonathon Poe (Stelio Savante) and the famous American writer Edgar Allan Poe. This picture was recently completed in June and the film also stars Felissa Rose, David Fine, and Gene Silvers. Poe makes a bloody mess with a cannibalistic theme while the low production values and poor acting threaten to torpedo Poe's ship.
The film begins with Jonathon Poe being propositioned with a biography from an agent and part-time girlfriend. After some humming and hawing Poe takes on the job only to find himself in an orgy of mutilation, disfigurement, and murder. You see, Dr. Andrew Casey, Poe's subject, likes to make meat and hamburger out of the local prostitutes and wannabe actresses hanging out around Hollywood. Enter a moral dilemna...

Dread Central recently caught up with writer/director John Skipp during the Never Sleep Again event this past weekend and talked to him about his brand new project he has coming up, Rose. The creator describes the project as "a freaky shot-in-3D feature with a radically whacked-out approach to the undead. Call it Pee Wee’s Playhouse meets Night of the Living Dead".
Skipp went on to say, “Rose is a super-hot, hilarious ex-mental patient with a cable access puppet show in downtown La. But now it’s 48 hours into the zombie apocalypse so she’s running rescue stations and musical numbers round the clock, trying to keep people’s hope alive…and periodically pausing to pulverize the skulls of the zombies trying to bust down her door.”
The movie introduces sexy newcomer Chase McKenna as the machete-juggling, shotgun-toting, corset-sporting gonzo comedienne with a secret that just might save the world.

Utah isn't just for lovers--It's also for the Sundance Film Festival. Every year the fest rolls around I am jealous of those who get to attend the premiere of some of the most talked about independent films. This is the largest indie film festival in the U.S. and this year's lineup for the Park City at Midnight category looks like good stuff. The festival runs January 21 - 31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Many popular horror films got their start at the festival, including Saw. I wonder if Weinberg was there... After the jump you can get up close and personal with the lineup for Sundance's Midnight movie series. Keep your eyes here for more info on the films as we get it. I also gave you my picks. A religious cult known as the Christians is getting into horror movie filmmaking with "The Message." Mostly involving a series of flashing images, "The Message," from Clay Castle Productions seems to need a message of its own. But, visually the teaser works on some level and captures the theme of a psychological horror film; have a first look at this film, which will be available in 2009, probably on DVD.
