Garcelle Beauvais said her May-December romance film “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love” won’t avoid any of the realities that come with women and aging, noting that menopause and body aches are part of the natural process of getting older.
“When [Terry McMillan and I] were collaborating on ‘Tempted by Love,’ I really wanted it to come from a real place,” Beauvais told TheWrap. “At first we’re like, ‘Is it too much to do the arthritis? Is it too much to do the menopause?’ But we’re like, ‘But that’s what real women go through.’ So why would we shy away from that?”
The film, which stars and is executive produced by Beauvais, follows the journey of world-renowned chef Ava, who has been living in Europe but rushes home to care for her elderly aunt in South Carolina after she suffers from a fall. She’s then...

Angela Bassett is now one of the most revered and respected actresses in Hollywood after multiple decades in the business. There were only two years between her breakthrough role in "Boyz n the Hood," to her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It." Bassett not winning that year has long been considered one of the worst snubs in Oscar history. Despite Bassett's deserved stature in the industry, being tasked with finding substantial roles in 12 good movies was harder than anticipated. This goes to show that however talented and skilled a Black actress is, she will not necessarily get the opportunities for leading roles that she should rightfully have.
Despite this, Bassett has still worked with a wide range of filmmakers, including John Sayles, Wes Craven, John Singleton, Forest Whitaker, and Spike Lee, and has taken on a wide range of roles. She has worked with Laurence Fishburne three times,...

Own: Oprah Winfrey Network has set a Wednesday, August 14 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt premiere date for its anticipated new drama series “David Makes Man,” from Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (“Moonlight”) and Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
An Oscar to his credit, his script for Netflix’s Steven Soderbergh drama “High Flying Bird” drawing high praise, and his Broadway production “Choir Boy” having wrapped up a successful run in March, playwright and screenwriter McCraney continues to impress with his initial foray into television with the deeply personal “David Makes Man.”
Inspired by the writer’s impoverished youth in Florida, the milieu naturally calls to mind “Moonlight,” and even borrows some of the film’s stylistic touchstones, bathing images in evocative colors, accompanied by a melancholic score that sets the lyrical tone.

The estate of Whitney Houston has officially announced that “Whitney,” an “intimate, definitive account of the superstar’s life and career,” will be released July 6. A powerhouse team of Oscar winners is at the helm of this documentary. Leading the charge is director, Kevin Macdonald, who won an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2000 (“One Day in September”). He earned further acclaim for his 2006 biopic on Ugandan President Idi Amin, “The Last King of Scotland,” for which Forest Whitaker took home the Oscar for Best Actor and his 2012 feature about reggae legend Bob Marley (“Marley”).
For “Whitney,” Macdonald was granted exclusive rights to a vault of unheard music and never-before-seen video footage spanning the entirety of the late singer’s legendary career. Co-producing the film is Simon Chinn, a creative force who has won Best Documentary at the Academy Awards twice. In 2008 he took home the golden statue for “Man on Wire,...

You’ll love this new film about hate! In Supremacy, Joe Anderson (A Single Shot, Hercules) plays white supremacist Tully, who’s just been paroled. But his first night out could be his last. He just killed a cop. He’s on the run. And no one’s going to listen to an ex-con with the Aryan Nation. His leader (Anson Mount) just cut him loose, and as the police close in, Tully and his girlfriend (Dawn Olivieri) add home invasion and hostages to the body count. But no one counted on Mr. Walker (Danny Glover), an ex-con himself, to fight back – using his understanding of the racist mind to turn the tables on a desperate and violent man. Will it be enough to keep his family alive?

Title: Supremacy Director: Deon Taylor Starring: Joe Anderson, Dawn Olivieri, Lela Rochon, Robin Bobeau, Danny Glover and Evan Ross Resolutely defending your beliefs and taking firm action to uphold those views, no matter how drastic they may be, can often lead to harrowing conflicts with those determined enough to righteously defend their contradictory principles. Director Deon Taylor’s new drama, ‘Supremacy,’ which is now playing in select theaters nationwide, fearlessly chronicles the brazen and unwavering antics of supremacists who firmly set out to spread their ideas to their community, without any regard to how demeaning their principles are to many of their neighbors. It isn’t until the film’s ruthless antagonists begin [ Read More ]

The 1990′s introduced the world to Quentin Tarantino, saw the creation of the Nc-17 rating, and began the slow call toward fully computer animated films. It began the slow (still slow) movement toward a more diverse industry, with the first African-American director earning an Oscar nomination (John Singleton for “Boyz in the Hood”). And the year after one of the greatest years in the history of film, 1995 came plodding along, trying to keep up. So, for the first definitive list of 2015, we are going to look back 20 years at a year that, at first glance, doesn’t look so hot. It’s ripe with flops, but it’s also full of debuts, trailblazing beginnings, and better films than it gets credit for. But, the caveat still stands: this is not a “best of” list. In fact, there are a lot of bad movies on this list. But, they are movies that made a cultural impact,...

Title: Supremacy Director: Deon Taylor Starring: Joe Anderson, Dawn Olivieri, Danny Glover, Derek Luke, Evan Ross, Lela Rochon, Robin Bobeau, Anson Mount, Nick Chinlund, Julie Benz A polished technical package lends considerable emotional weight to “Supremacy,” a siege/hostage drama shot through with racial animus. Based on real events, director Deon Taylor’s movie connects largely on the strength of its solid acting and charged stakes, but suffers a bit from muddled plotting and a dramatically diffuse end game. Director Deon Taylor’s dramatic thriller "Supremacy," centers on any black family’s worst nightmare: being held hostage by an Aryan Brotherhood member just released from a 14-year prison stint. Based on a true story, the film follows Tully (Joe Anderson), as he is just released from prison, and is picked up by an Aryan Brotherhood groupie, Doreen (Dawn Oliveri). Later, a police officer stops their car and Tully murders him. Escaping the scene, they break into a black family’s old farmhouse, headed by Mr. Walker (Danny Glover) and his young wife Odessa, played by a rough and tumble Lela Rochon.
