Exclusive: Writer Nell Scovell (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and former NBCUniversal content chief Susan Rovner are developing the new series The Fishbowl with CBS Studios for CBS, sources tell Deadline.
The drama is a procedural about a brilliant medical examiner overseeing a private room at the Manhattan morgue that investigates New York City’s weirdest deaths, we hear.
Scovell created the series and will executive produce with Susan Rovner through her newly minted Aha Studios banner. CBS Studios is producing.
The Fishbowl marks Scovell’s second procedural pilot for CBS. The first, Without a Clue, starred Gary Cole, Busy Phillips and Marisa Coughlan, but did not move forward to series. She also worked as a consulting producer on NCIS. Scovell is a WGA-nominated writer who is best known as the creator and showrunner of ABC’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch and has written for David Letterman, The Simpsons, Charmed and The Muppets.

Awards season will be in full swing at the Emmys on Sunday, and with it comes a new wave of heightened speculation about who got suddenly skinny for the red carpet — and whether they used Ozempic to get there.
The pressure on celebrities about their looks is nothing new and neither are medical methods to improve them. But the popularity of Ozempic and the rapid, dramatic results it creates has fueled a debate over a kind of reverse body-shaming — did she or didn’t she Ozempic? — and some are pushing back.
“It’s the last acceptable bias,” Oprah Winfrey, a veteran of the weight-loss wars, said during her recent TV special on the topic. She parted ways with her longtime sponsor Weight Watchers after revealing she was using an unspecified weight-loss drug. “Let’s stop the shaming and blaming. There’s no place for it.”

Chicago – As political leaders have been campaigning for the Democratic Party and its nominees throughout the week, a contingent of Hollywood stars are making the case for the importance of funding the arts and the efficacy of the arts at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
They’re here with The Creative Coalition, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public advocacy organization that was formed in 1989. It’s led by actor Tim Daly, who serves as president, and CEO Robin Bronk. The organization has been bringing celebrities to both the DNC and RNC for 24 years.

After July’s Republican National Convention attracted such luminaries as Hulk Hogan, Kid Rock and Amber Rose, this year’s Democratic National Convention is drawing arguably bigger stars like Oprah, Spike Lee, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Stevie Wonder.
This year’s DNC, celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination, was hosted by Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington, with each star emceeing one night of the event. The four-day convention featured performances by Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Patti Labelle and other major musicians; surprise appearances by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, who gave a speech urging those who are registered as independent like herself to vote; a daytime panel moderated by Julia Louis-Dreyfus; and more.
Besides the noteworthy political figures who made an appearance at the DNC, including President Joe Biden and Harris herself, these are the recognizable names who have been spotted at events around the convention.

Keenan Ivory Wayans' 2004 comedy "White Chicks" was an oddity when it was released, and it's just as much an oddity now. The plot revolves around a pair of Black, male FBI agents who have to, for contrived reasons, disguise themselves as young, wealthy white women, and the comedy stems entirely from racial and gender juxtapositions the men experience. While there may have been an opportunity to write a penetrating criticism of race and gender, the filmmakers took no opportunities to be even the slightest bit profound. That, at any rate, seemed to be the critical consensus on "White Chicks," which was widely lambasted and was even declared by many to be one of the worst films of its year.
And yet, and yet ... it keeps on drawing people in. As of this writing, "White Chicks" is the highest-rating comedy film on Netflix in the United States. Either the film has...

Freaks and Geeks brought ‘90s teens some of the most relatable lines on television (bangers like “I don’t need another friend. I’ve got two”) as well as helped launch the careers of budding comedy legends Busy Phillips, Jason Segel and Seth Rogen, to name just a few.
Other famous Freaks and Geeks alums include — take a deep breath — Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, James Franco, Sarah Hagan, Samm Levine, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Rashida Jones, David Krumholtz, Lizzy Caplan, Shia Labeouf, Ben Stiller, Leslie Mann, Mike White, Jason Schwartzman, Ann Dowd and Shaun Weiss.

Too bad the 1999 show with a nearly-perfect script and cast was slashed by NBC after only a single season, but its tragic cancellation earned it cult classic status. Freaks and Geeks, created by Paul Feig and exec-produced by Judd Apatow, has been on numerous lists of the greatest shows of all time.

For years, Sara Bareilles has been enjoying a career that’s hard to pin down. She hit the spotlight as a singer-songwriter behind albums like “Little Voice” and “The Blessed Unrest,” but she also detoured into musical theater by writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway show “Waitress” in 2015. She’s been nominated for Grammys as a songwriter and performer, for Tonys as a composer and actress and for Emmys as an actress, host and songwriter.
In a way, the comedy series “Girls5eva,” which moved to Netflix for Season 3 after two seasons and one cancellation on Peacock, includes some of everything Bareilles does. Don’t ask Cecily Strong who she thinks is the nicest Saturday Night Live host. Pfft. Guest hosts are all nice. “I think that’s because people come in, and they’re nervous,” Strong told Busy Phillips on a 2019 episode of Busy Tonight. “They want to do well so you’re seeing people at their most vulnerable.”
That puts guests on their best behavior, or as Strong likes to call it, “scared and weak.” And that’s the way she prefers it.
So let’s forget nicest. Which host surprised Strong the most? “I was the most shocked by Chris Hemsworth,” she said, admitting she was less than thrilled when she heard Thor was coming to 30 Rock. “When he first hosted, I was like, ‘Ugh, not my world.’”

Chrissy Teigen, known for her bold fashion choices and sharp responses to online critics, made headlines again with her outfit at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony. Teigen, 38, attended the Paris event wearing a green knit Chloé cardigan priced at $1,790, paired with matching micro shorts costing $1,000. The ensemble, which some Instagram followers likened to a diaper, quickly sparked a mix of reactions on social media.
Teigen’s daring look, featuring military-style gold buttons on both the cardigan and the hot pants, was completed with strappy Saint Laurent sandals and a Bottega Veneta clutch. Despite being perfectly on-trend, the outfit was met with criticism. One Instagram user commented, “The worst outfit for that kind of event,” to which Teigen wittily responded, “thanks for sharing!”

This year, FX’s historical drama series Shōgun and Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer became the most talked-about shows in a long time, dominating conversation at every social gathering. Fans would be surprised to discover that the show made it to the top five highest-ranked series of 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
We have to give a special shout to Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country( Number 15 on Rotten Tomatoes) and Amazon’s Fallout (Number 16), which failed to make the top 5 but was one of the best shows TV had to offer this year.

For Wickie Roy, there is no such thing as a creative process; if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.
The unapologetically attention-hungry, vocal powerhouse of “Girls5eva” lives each moment as if she might find a spotlight and stage around every corner. Or rather, it might find her. With a Rolodex of vocal riffs at the ready, Wickie is just waiting for fame to come calling.
Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays the natural-born star in the Netflix comedy, wishes she could walk through the world as aloud as Wickie. So, in order to play her each season, Goldsberry’s process is simple: let go.
“I believe as actors we get a license to set some crazy things free within ourselves, and that’s what Wickie gives me,” Goldsberry tells Variety. “A license to not only dress and style myself in a certain way, but a freedom to...

Returning from an almost two-year break in March, all three seasons of Girls5eva are currently on Netflix. And while the show didn’t manage to crack the streamer’s desirable (albeit kind of mysterious) Top 10, creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino says she’s thrilled with opening up her cult comedy to a massive global subscriber base — even if there’s still no official word on a potential fourth season.
Speaking from her home in New York at the end of May, the Colbert Report and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alum chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s performance, the shared sensibility of executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlocks comedy roster and her recent debut as a Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! panelist.

If Paula Pell had her way, “Girls5Eva” would be one of the longest-running comedies on television.
“I could do it for 15 seasons, and I’d be tapping my foot like, ‘What’s the news on 16?’” Pell told TheWrap. Part of that passion has to do with the talent behind the series, which moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season. Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by the team of Robert Carlock, Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond, the series centers on Pell, Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Busy Philipps.
“Girls5Eva” follows a girl group that used to be big in the 2000s but has since been shoved aside. Decades after disbanding, these now middle-aged women reunite to take another shot at becoming pop stars. Pell portrays Gloria, the group member who used to be closeted and who spends most of Season 3 sleeping with her various fans while touring on the road.

For three seasons, first on Peacock and then on Netflix, the titular band in “Girls5Eva” has relentlessly pursued the comeback success that perhaps only they think they deserve. And over the course of Season 3, all four members of the group find themselves wrestling with what the pursuit of success (and the very idea of success itself) means in both the practical and psychological sense.
That’s why, when their big comeback gig at Radio City Music Hall on Thanksgiving Day ends up with just friends and family — and Richard Kind — in the audience, they’re happy to embrace the moment and sing a song about shifting goals: “The Medium Time.”

The team behind “Girls5eva” has gotten used to being texted song demos out of the blue. Series creator Meredith Scardino regularly sends music supervisor (and fellow executive producer) Jeff Rich- mond and his team voice memos singing her lyrics to the show’s latest absurd songs, such as “Home Alone Doorknob” or “Sweet’N Low Daddy.”
By season’s end, Sara Bareilles also gets in on the fun. It is a tradition that the Grammy winner, who stars as Dawn, writes a song to emotionally punctuate each finale. In Season 1, as Dawn began to harness her own songwriting dreams, Bareilles penned an ode to imperfection with “Four Stars,” and for Season 2, she was behind the empowering anthem “Bend Not Break.”
Deploying Bareilles’ soulful style is always strategic for the series, which moved to Netflix for Season 3 after two seasons on Peacock.

In Netflix series Girls5Eva the band gets back together — literally. The titular all-female pop group hit the skids back in the early aughts, but when a hip hop star samples their old hit song 20 years later, the women grab their second chance, leading to some questionable outfit choices and calamitous video shoots. As self-proclaimed band leader, Wickie Roy, Hamilton Tony-winner Renée Elise Goldsberry deadpans her way through deliberately terrible songs written by co-star Sara Bareilles, alongside Paula Pell and Busy Phillips. With the show in its third season, Goldsberry says it reminds us it’s never too late to chase our dreams.

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

In this edition of THR Frontrunners, Girls5Eva creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino and stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell joined The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tyler Coates for a conversation about the third season of the Netflix comedy series at a live event hosted by the San Vincente Bungalows in Los Angeles.
“It was heavenly,” said Pell about the streamer picking up the series — the first two seasons of which aired on Peacock — for its third season. “It’s like art imitating life: Our characters have second chances.”
Scardino added that a lot of the comedy, which follows the exploits of a turn-of-the-millennium girl group who are thrust back into the spotlight decades later when a Gen-z rapper samples their pop hit, is sparked from the four stars’ incredible bond both on- and off-camera. “They have a joke that I have weekly meetings with their therapists,...

Oprah Winfrey Apologizes For Promoting “Diet Culture”. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Oprah Winfrey recently reflected on past mistakes that included promoting unsustainable weight loss methods during her time on her popular eponymous talk show. During a three-hour live WeightWatchers special for WeightWatchers on Thursday, May 9, Oprah acknowledged her complicity in promoting unsafe “diet culture” through her talk show and magazines.
The apology comes months after Oprah Winfrey revealed that she had lost 40 pounds using a weight-loss medication Ozempic despite previously calling it an “easy way out.”
In 2012, during an episode of “Oprah Daily’s The Life You Want: The State of Weight,” the talk show host shaded the celebrity weight loss trend Ozempic, saying, “If I take the drug, that’s the easy way out.”

Oprah Winfrey apologized for being a “major contributor” to America’s toxic diet culture. During an event hosted by Weight Watchers on Thursday, Winfrey took responsibility for promoting unhealthy weight loss methods and expressed regret for profiting from diet culture in her shows.
“I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture. Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and online . . . “Girls5eva” deserves to be heard. Yes, the laugh-out-loud comedy, from the minds of Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, creator Meredith Scardino and others, is funny. The music industry is wickedly skewered. The music, led by Jeff Richmond, is clever and catchy.
But really, the heart of the show comes from its stars — Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell — and the characters they play. These are women of a certain age who are rediscovering their voices and finally taking on their dreams, after years of settling for something less.

Jenna Fischer put her acting skills to the test on the set of 2024’s Mean Girls. The actress revealed this week she filmed the movie with a broken shoulder.

New Yorkers were shaken up on Friday morning when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Lebanon, New Jersey, and was felt across the tri-state area.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 10:23 a.m. local time, in the Jersey city about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia. According to The Associated Press, the agency notes that more than 42 million people may have felt the quake.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul posted on X that the quake was felt throughout the state: “My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”
New York-based figures like late night host Jimmy Fallon and Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. responded to the earthquake with humor.
Fallon wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted, “Having a dance party with Godzilla rn in NYC. Sorry for the scare.

New York was shaken by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake Friday morning, according to the Associated Press.
The earthquake occurred at 10:23 a.m. Et about eight miles northwest of Bridgewater, N.J., per the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, and rattled skyscrapers and buildings across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, per reports.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 is generally considered moderate, though it appears to be among the biggest earthquakes to ever affect New York City.
In addition to New York and New Jersey, the quake was felt in parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts as well.
New York governor Kathy Hochul tweeted quickly after the quake, writing, “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”

Joe Flaherty, a writer and performer on the influential and beloved sketch comedy series Sctv and a series regular on Freaks and Geeks, died Monday following a brief illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by his daughter Gudrun Flaherty, who said in a press statement, “After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss. Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. In these last few months, as he faced his health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many of those classic movies together — moments I will forever hold dear.”

What happens when you plan an extravagant worldwide tour… and nobody shows up?
That, unfortunately, seems to be the case for Girls5eva, the sharp and sassy music-industry comedy that moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season this month. The show — staring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of a forgotten Y2K-era girl group attempting a middle-age comeback — was never properly appreciated during its two Peacock seasons, and it felt like a lifeline when it got picked up by Netflix for Season 3, since the streaming giant routinely turns its acquired shows into monster hits.

My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.
