As she accepted the Democratic nomination Thursday night, Kamala Harris played up her attorney-general past. “As a prosecutor, when I had a case, I charged it not in the name of the victim, but in the name of the people,” she told the United Center crowd.
This follows a strategy she has pursued since ramping up her campaign. As a Law & Order-themed ad that aired Monday had it: “We need a president who has spent her life prosecuting perpetrators like Donald Trump.”
On one hand, such a tack relies on simple logic. Harris ascended politics on the ladder of her prosecutor reputation. With her opponent convicted of a felony — and him staking his candidacy on the Democrats’ alleged softness on crime — “successful career prosecutor” makes for a stellar defense.
But while perhaps a sound political strategy, Harris’ embrace of her previous job runs her into an unexpected roadblock: Hollywood has...

Dakota Johnson is giving audiences something to chew on about Hollywood’s inner workings when she’s not in the Amazon researching spiders with her mom. Speaking with L’Officiel, the Madame Web star got candid about the challenges of movie making and how executives could be stifling creative minds in the streaming arena. Last year, Johnson’s experience with her film Daddio opened her eyes to several problems plaguing the film industry. The film, which also stars Sean Penn, encountered several challenges during production, highlighting the uphill battle of selling a “riskier” idea to studios.
“We made a movie called ‘Daddio ‘that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made,” Johnson said. “People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody...

Marvel’s Madame Web is nearly ready to make its Valentine’s Day debut in theaters, and Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume is here to set fans’ hearts (and pants) on fire. Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume looks fantastic, inspired by the character’s appearance in Marvel Comics. While I question the designer’s choice of headgear, the body suit, complete with silver web lining, is right out of the comics. The grey material along Sweeney’s arms is new but oddly fitting.
Madame Web features Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Emma Roberts as Mary Parker, and Adam Scott as Ben Parker. Zosia Mamet, Jill Hennessy, Tahar Rahim, Celeste O’Connor, and Mike Epps star as primary cast members.
Here’s the official synopsis for Marvel’s Madame Web:

This is Day 116 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
SAG-AFTRA picket lines in New York City on Monday doubled as vigils, with striking actors waiting for their union’s leaders to weigh in on the “last, best, and final offer” package that the studios and streamers delivered Saturday.
“We were handed 500 pages,” SAG-AFTRA strike captain Sue Berch said Monday in her traditional stemwinder of a closing speech for morning pickets outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices in Manhattan. “So [negotiators] are going through it to make sure they keep track of everything that’s in there. Trust them.”
“‘Last, best, and final,’ my ass!” one picketer shouted, prompting whoops and cheers. Berch agreed, saying, “It isn’t final ’til we say it’s final.”

David Hyde Pierce has heard the rallying cries of striking actors from outside the building he’s been rehearsing in. The Frasier star has been performing in the off-Broadway musical Here We Are for the last month, and finally found time to join union members Friday on the picket lines outside of Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery’s offices in New York City.
“I’d look at my friends protesting everyday thinking, I wish I could be there and cheer on from rehearsal,” Pierce tells Rolling Stone. “So finally, I get to participate.

This is Day 92 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
At the first actors to picket after Wednesday night’s breakdown of their talks with the studios and streamers, SAG-AFTRA members in New York City said that they were disappointed by the setback but “holding strong” to their demands.
Striking actors who gathered Thursday outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices also cheered the announcement of bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate to protect them from artificial intelligence.
Writers joining them on the picket line after ratifying their own contract this week urged the actors to stay strong.
“It’s tactics,” The Wire creator David Simon told Deadline, speaking of the studios’ decision to suspend the talks and criticize SAG-AFTRA for demanding a share of studio profits. “They say you can’t have something and you’ll never get something, and ‘DGA settled for this and you don’t understand our industry.

This is Day 83 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The language was salty but the mood was upbeat at a union rally in Midtown Manhattan by striking actors and their supporters from the 150,000-member Transportation Workers Union.
With talks between the actors union and the production studios paused until Wednesday, the crowd at SAG-AFTRA’s solidarity picket with the Twu filled two lanes of the street outside NBCUniversal headquarters and made a sometimes Nsfw din that could be heard for blocks.
Oscar-winning actor F. Murray Abraham, one of the rally speakers, dropped an F-bomb in remarks calling for all working Americans to receive a livable wage and health care. “And since our corrupt Congress won’t give that to us, we got a f*ckin’ union,” he said to cheers.

With enough famous actors to populate an awards show all gathered on one stage, the labor union representing them in an “existential battle” against film and television studios held a star-studded strike rally in the middle of New York’s Times Square on Tuesday morning.
An audience of several hundred people including card-waving members of SAG-AFTRA squeezed into a barricaded pedestrian plaza on a humid day when at least one spectator required medical attention. At an event dubbed “Rock the City for a Fair Contract,” they heard almost two hours worth of speeches from union representatives and from high-profile acting peers including Bryan Cranston, Christine Baranski, Wendell Pierce, Christian Slater, Stephen Lang, Michelle Hurd, Jill Hennessy and Steve Buscemi.

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in April, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include an anthology, a creature-feature, some found footage, and two slashers.

Directed by Sharron Miller.
The House of the Dead — also known as Last Stop on 13 Street and Alien Zone — is an American stab at an Amicus-style anthology film. Shot in Oklahoma with students from Osu, this low-budget horror omnibus does a creditable job of capturing the macabre spirit of The House That Dripped Blood and The Vault of Horror.

Exclusive: Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta books have completed their long journey to the screen with a blockbuster TV series starring Oscar winner Nicole Kidman in the title role and Oscar nominee Jamie Lee Curtis as the famous forensic pathologist’s sister Dorothy, I have learned. The newest addition to Fox's lineup, Accused, boasts that its unique perspective tells the story through the eyes of the defendants.
Many crime and legal dramas often center on the prosecution and obtaining justice for the victim's family, so this point of view gives the viewers a chance to weigh their judgment of the defendant.
Accused Season 1 Episode 1 meets that promise and more. The hour-long drama gives a well-rounded story of crime, mental health, dysfunctional families, and desperation.
Accused is produced as an anthology, each episode telling its own story. Episode One centers on Scott Harmon, a well-regarded pediatric neurosurgeon. The incomparable Michael Chiklis plays Dr. Harmon.
The episode begins with the prosecution trying Scott for murder. The reporters hassle him regarding his deceased son. At this point, we wonder if he murdered his child.
Dr. Harmon's background is portrayed as hardworking and successful. He seems to care deeply for his patients.

Imagine Law & Order told from the defendant’s point of view, laying out like a jigsaw puzzle the emotionally fraught circumstances that got them in this mess. Adapted from a British series by veteran producer H0ward Gordon, Fox‘s Accused (premiering January 22) takes that riskiest of formats for commercial TV — the weekly stand-alone anthology — and grafts it onto the legal drama with morally challenging parables that take us out of our comfort zone. Not exactly a recipe for slam-dunk success, but kudos to Fox for even attempting something this ambitious and, more often than not, riveting, at times even heartbreaking. Take the opening installment: “Scott’s Story,” a haunting what-if melodrama starring Michael Chiklis as a respected neurosurgeon who fears his emotionally withdrawn, bullied teenage son (Oakes Fegley) has the makings of a mass murderer. His wife (played by Jill Hennessy) coddles the boy and is in denial,...

Penske Media Corp. has acquired Atx TV, the entity that operates the annual television festival in Austin, Tex.
The deal calls for Pmc, which is the parent company of Variety, to help expand the scope of the Atx brand with programming and activities beyond the four-day event in June that has become a key stop on the industry’s promotional calendar.
The Atx TV festival is heading into its 12th edition next year, set to run June 1-4. The company was founded by TV enthusiasts Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland, who put themselves on the map in a short time by smartly programming a mix of nostalgic reunions, lively table reads plus a mix of buzzy premieres and industry-centric panels. Atx has become a high-visibility event for TV promotional events, but it’s still managed to maintain a low-key atmosphere for creative talent that appeals to Hollywood insiders. In 2017, Gipson...
