These days, it's not easy to keep track of all the different streaming services you may be subscribed to. It can take hours to sift through the libraries on Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu in search of the best movies you can watch for free. Take, for instance, Paramount+. Since it was launched in its current form in 2021, Paramount+ has been a home for original programming like "Halo" and "Knuckles," as well as content from CBS, Nickelodeon, and Showtime.
When opening up the platform's Movies section, it's overwhelming to see the spectrum of films and genres to search through. You could watch classics like "The Godfather" or "Forrest Gump," both of which are currently on Paramount+, but what about films you might not easily find on the front page? From the most iconic films of all time to more recent indie hits, these 15 films will guarantee you a great movie night,...

When Morrissey attempted to reunite the New York Dolls in 2004 for a performance at London’s Meltdown festival, he thought his odds of success were low. “I expected David [Johansen] to laugh at me and put the phone down,” he said that year. “But he was very agreeable and it seemed like now was the right time. He said, ‘Yes, they are great songs.’ I said, ‘Yes, and that’s the reason why you should sing them. That’s the reason why people still want to hear them.’”

Producer/songwriter Andrew Watt went from the pop world to finding himself in the studio with his rock heroes, from the Rolling Stones to Pearl Jam — and now he’s back at the center of pop as executive producer of Lady Gaga’s upcoming album Mayhem. His career is reaching new heights at the moment, with a Grammy win for the Stones’ Hackney Diamonds, an Oscar nomination for a track with Elton John and Brandi Carlile (who have a Watt-produced dual album on the way), and a long run...

It was the “Footloose” of times, it was the “Ninja Rap” of times. We’re talking, of course, about the golden age of movie tie-in promotional singles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, a time when a well-placed theme could create the song and the movie of the summer, while a misused one probably involved Mc Hammer. In between were a lot of attempts that nobody remembers, because what was the point of making a movie if you couldn’t coerce a pop star to sell their soul for a lot of money?

Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most-watched in history, with more than 133 million people tuning in — and it also may have been the most uncompromising. In a slot that every previous artist has reserved mostly for greatest hits, Lamar only played bits of two older songs, focusing instead on his excellent new album, Gnx, and his Drake-eviscerating smash, “Not Like Us.”

Rick Harrison, son Corey and Austin “Chumlee” Russell are back wheeling and dealing for Season 23 of Pawn Stars. The three welcome property owners to add to the inventory of Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. The premiere saw Rick meet up with 1980s and 1990s hit-maker Taylor Dayne to give the owner the opportunity to acquire some wardrobe pieces and memorabilia from her tours. During the January 29 episode, Rick, a noted car guy, takes a ride in a bright yellow 1975 Bricklin Sv-1 and looks at a Shyvers Multiphone that gets him thinking about his late dad. The one on February 5 included everything from a Stock Oil stock certificate to a camera that shot the first footage of Elvis. Coming up during the February 12 episode the three take a look at an apparent outfit worn by Alice Cooper, a 7-foot tall Deadpool Pez dispenser, MetaZoo cards and a 1988 Winter Olympics torch.

We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live”! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.
When “The Blues Brothers” hit theaters in 1980, it opened a Pandora’s Box that would eventually gift Hollywood films like “Wayne’s World” and curse it with abominations like “It’s Pat” and “Coneheads.” John Landis’ ultra-cool film about two brothers on a mission from God to get the band back together was bursting with Chicago blues performances, epic car chases, and enough celebrity cameos to fill a season of “Saturday Night Live.” Grossing over $100 million on a $27 million budget, it proved to many that characters who originated on Lorne Michaels’ NBC variety show were more than capable of carrying their own feature film.
In theory, that was true. With “SNL” exploding in popularity and Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi wading into movie stardom,...

In the beginning, R.E.M. would play anywhere that would have them, from pizza parlors to gay bars to frat parties. For all the arty elusiveness of their early music, the band that would end up setting the template for the Nineties alt-rock boom was hungrier and more strategic than it might have seemed — which is just one of many revelations in Peter Ames Carlin’s illuminating new book, The Name of This Band Is R.E.M.: A Biography.

Fans have been waiting a long time to see writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), which wrapped filming way back in 2021 and unveiled a teaser trailer near the end of 2023, around the time it had its world premiere screening. Earlier this month, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film an unrated wide release later this year. Now, we know the exact release date. Deadline has learned that the Toxic Avenger remake will be reaching theatres on August 29th, kicking off Labor Day weekend!
Blair’s version of The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-x health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for.

Leave it to A24 to always make an impression at a festival — and Monday night it left the entire Eccles transfixed and locked in their seats with the premiere of Mark Anthony Green’s directorial debut Opus. It was like everyone was in movie church. While there were some laughs in the topsy-turvy movie, it’s fair to say that the crowd was indeed stunned.

As sympathy pours in for the devastated families and businesses scattered around fire-ravaged Los Angeles, resentment is creeping toward the Hollywood Sign.
Tourists accidentally sparked controversy on social media last Tuesday when they asked about the iconic landmark amid record-breaking wildfires in LA. The hilltop monument wasn’t anywhere near the destructive blazes that night — the fires were too busy destroying residential communities then — but the thought pulled focus from real relief efforts.
Despite the insistence of several apocalyptic films (“Escape from LA” among them), the Hollywood Sign has never caught fire. It was erected from wood and sheet metal in 1923 to promote the “Hollywoodland” housing development and, in keeping with current events, fell into disrepair because of extreme winds. That lead to the 50-foot-tall letters’ restoration in 1978, an effort fortified in white steel and funded by several entertainment heavyweights including Alice Cooper and Warner Bros.

In the fall of 1990, inside a fully functional second floor magic shop located above a methadone clinic on Hollywood Boulevard, Bryan Rabin made his first splash on the Los Angeles nightlife scene (alongside his partner, the late actor Jimmy Medina) with a traveling, if extralegal, after hours club called The Lounge. “It was the Wild West. We’d just drive around at night and look for spots. I was 20 years old, full of moxie, and we’d just tell people we wanted to throw a bar mitzvah in their space,” recalls Rabin, noting the club migrated from photography and film studios to empty lofts and attracted everyone from Billy Idol to Thierry Mugler and Wolfgang Puck to dance there. “We moved every week to keep away from the police and had to call or fax everyone the day of each party.”

Amy Allen just scored a Grammy nomination for Songwriter of the Year after co-writing every song on Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet — and she owes her entire career to the vampire baby in one of the Twilight movies. Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo, two of the biggest and most interesting pop artists of the past half decade, have a not-so-secret weapon in common: producer and co-writer Daniel Nigro, formerly the frontman of the ’00s band As Tall As Lions. Nigro, who just scored a Grammy nomination for Producer of the Year, helped Roan and Rodrigo step off the pop assembly line and sidestep trends, building uncommonly sturdy catalogs of precisely crafted, oft rock-inflected hits.

Some lessons need to be learned over and over again. When Bob Dylan and the Beatles broke through in the Sixties, they paved the way for generations of artists to write their own songs. But by the early 2000s, the charts had been largely reclaimed by pro songwriters and svengali producers — until a young, putatively country artist named Taylor Swift came along.
As Swift rapidly moved toward pop stardom, guitar always in hand, she started an industry-wide movement toward artists — especially young women — writing about their own lives again. “When...

Decades never start quite on time, pop-culturally speaking, and it’s tempting to say that the Sixties didn’t really kick off until the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, just as “Smells Like Teen Spirt” started the Nineties in 1991. But as David Browne’s new book, Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, suggests, the Sixties’ spirit really began in Greenwich Village, not Liverpool — and the music that really got it going was written by Bob Dylan. In June of 1963, Peter,...

He kept up a double life as a studio musician throughout the the entire history of the band, backing other artists whenever Toto had even a tiny moment of downtime. Gilmore Girls would not have been so iconic without the lightning-bolt chemistry between its two lead actresses. Alexis Bledel as beautiful bookworm teen Rory and Lauren Graham as the quick-witted, hot mess of a mom Lorelai made the show wildly popular. It was going to take a flawless match for the show to truly work and, thankfully, casting got it right. However, multiple other now-famous CW actors were considered for these lead roles, making for some of Gilmore Girls' biggest "What ifs?"
Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino knew she had something special in Gilmore Girls with its cozy New England vibes and sugary-sweet small-town antics. Each episode had pages of whip-smart pop-culture references and endless banter between Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai, in particular, would have been a challenging role to cast when she is a very flawed yet endearing character. In the opening credits of Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the evil child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) is seen hiding out in a remote boiler room, carefully constructing his preferred mode of violence: a glove outfitted with long blades on the fingertips. Freddy uses his glove to slash through the innocent flesh of his victims, giving him an animalian, predatory nature. When he wears the glove, he is ready to kill -- and he never removes it.
Freddy's glove, charred face, striped sweater, and rumpled hobo hat became the monster's signature look, and millions of horror fans have recreated Freddy's costume every Halloween since. Naturally, one can buy replica plastic Freddy gloves at costume shops, even to this day.

“This world is bullshit,” Chappell Roan recently said, during an extended TikTok rant. “You shouldn’t model your life on what we think is cool and what we’re wearing and what we’re saying and everything. Go with yourself.” All right, fine, that was actually what Fiona Apple said on the VMAs in 1997 — and at the time, Apple’s dissatisfaction with fame briefly threatened to become the essence of her brand, overshadowing the brilliance of her music. But Apple continued creating, and her songs have long since outlasted any passing controversies.

Wes Craven made some very underrated movies. There was Deadly Friend, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and The People Under the Stairs, all of which have found new appreciation as the years passed. However, one of his movies that I always thought should have been a major hit was his 1989 flick Shocker. This was Craven’s attempt to make his own Freddy Krueger-style slasher, Horace Pinker (future X-Files star Mitch Pileggi), who, upon his execution, becomes an unstoppable force of energy who goes on a massive killing spree. The only one who can stop him is a teenager (Peter Berg – long before he became a director) whose girlfriend was among Picker’s victims and has a psychic connection to the killer.
While Craven and Universal probably hoped the film would become a hit, it whiffed at the box office, only making about $16 million, although it became a horror favourite on VHS.
