The Vampire Diaries is one of the best and most iconic teen drama fantasy series and it captured the hearts and minds of its audience for over eight years during its eight-season run. Developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, the teen fantasy horror drama series is based on the book series of the same name by author L.J. Audible‘s Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is not moving forward with a second season.

The podcast series co-author Christopher Golden confirmed the news on Wednesday (February 21).

“Hugely disappointed to share that, despite its enormous success, Disney has refused to allow Audible to proceed with future seasons of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. To my knowledge, they have provided no explanation,” he wrote on social media.

One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.

Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.

No one can play Buffy Summers, the girl chosen by fate to be a vampire Slayer, better than Sarah Michelle Gellar. She's not the only one who's tried though.

For starters, Gellar is actually the sophomore Slayer — Buffy was first played by Kristy Swanson in the original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie from 1992 (that's been soundly displaced by the TV series in pop culture). For the TV series, Charisma Carpenter originally auditioned for Buffy, but ultimately played Queen Bee Cordelia Chase instead, the part that Gellar turned down. The whole point of Cordelia is that she's what Buffy was before she became the Slayer (an acerbic popular girl), so casting Gellar and Carpenter made sense. In another world, they could pull off each others' parts.

Labrava is best known for his portrayal of Happy Lowman- the Assassin in the biker drama from Kurt Sutter, FX’s Sons of Anarchy, since the show’s inception in 2008 to its conclusion in 2014 for a total of seven seasons. The Miami native reprised the popular character Happy in the show’s spinoff series Mayans M.C., co-created by Sutter and Elgin James, for three seasons. He was one of the last surviving members of the original M.C. until his demise in the final season.

"The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.

The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. In the years since it wrapped up, loving "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has become complicated. Specifically, the legacy of the seminal '90s series has been somewhat tarnished after multiple allegations against creator and showrunner Joss Whedon surfaced. Not only did several members of the "Buffy" crew accuse Whedon of fostering a toxic set, but numerous other colleagues and even his ex-wife came out to claim that he had acted unprofessionally at best, and abusive at worst.

The most vocal of all the "Buffy" cast was Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia on the show and later its spin-off "Angel." Carpenter alleged that Whedon was "cruel" to her and others on-set and that his behavior caused her to suffer from a "chronic physical condition." Thankfully, the "Buffy" sequel series — an audio show called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" — finally brings some justice for Carpenter. But she wasn't the only one who struggled behind the scenes of "Buffy.

It's hard to imagine the smash-hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" without Sarah Michelle Gellar as the titular lead. But believe it or not, the actor was almost cast in a totally different role in the series. After an Emmy-winning stint as the mean girl on the soap opera "All My Children," the "Buffy" producers had a hard time seeing Gellar as anything other than the hellmouth's resident ice queen, Cordelia Chase. Thankfully, she held out for the brave-hearted protagonist, but it almost cost her both roles on the show. She ended up scoring the part she wanted in the end, but she was up against some stiff competition -- including the actor who ended up playing Cordelia!

The Audible Original features many characters returning to their roles from the original series, but in a completely different universe. During New York Comic Con we had a chance to set down with two Buffyverse veterans, Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia in both “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” and Emma Caulfield Ford who played Xander’s love interest Anya/Anyaka in the television series who just so happened to be a demon.

Continuation comics, novels, and planned reboots have kept the Buffyverse alive, but its legacy has also been complicated by allegations of workplace misconduct and bullying made against series creator Joss Whedon.

The latest installment of the world of Buffy, the Audible series "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story," aims to course-correct that, reuniting key cast members for the first time ever to tell a story Whedon plays no part in. To say the writer is nowhere to be found here would be inaccurate, though, as "Slayers" -- an intermittently charming, sometimes forced new chapter -- is all about overcoming the toxic influence of the past.

The story takes place roughly 12 years after Buffy Summers instilled all potential slayers with their full power, breaking a cycle of pain and isolation that afflicted centuries worth of chosen teen girls.

Twenty years after audiences watched Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) slay her last demon, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is set to return with a multiverse-style sequel. The new story won't be a TV show, but an audio series called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" -- a format switch that, while perhaps less common than a straightforward revival series, has been done successfully before by at least one other big fandom genre show, "Orphan Black."

The original cast members of the series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are returning for an Audible original story, “Slayers: A Buffyverse Story,” set in the same world as the original show. The new story will focus on Spike (James Marsters) as the protagonist and premieres Oct. 12.

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story will be set 20 years after the series finale with Marsters reprising his role alongside Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Anthony Head (Giles), Juliet Landau (Drusilla), Emma Caulfield (Anya), Amber Benson (Tara), James Charles Leary (Clem) and Danny Strong (Jonathan), as well as Buffyverse newcomer Laya DeLeon Hayes (from CBS’ The Equalizer). The audio-only story premieres Oct. 12 on Audible and will consist of nine episodes.

This was true when it debuted in 2001 and it's still true today, despite the ambivalence that now comes with being a "Buffy" fan in light of series creator Joss Whedon's extensively documented bad behavior. It took me a few years after allegations against Whedon dropped to find my way back to one of my favorite shows of all time -- and untangle the impression it had on me from the misdeeds of the artist most closely connected to it. At a time when both SAG-AFTRA and WGA have legitimate concerns about the increased use of AI and generative technology in Hollywood, actors have been bristling about the wording in the agreement, which Central Casting requires from everyone who relies on their service to find jobs. Updated: The CEO for Largo.ai, the Switzerland-based artificial intelligence company behind the “100 Actors Program,” wants to amplify the intent of the company’s latest initiative that was red-flagged by Charisma Carpenter.

CEO Sami Arpa said the program was only meant to be a “very narrow beta release” for 100 actors, even though they received 5,000 applications. Their hope is to make the tool more public after they complete this initial “experiment.”

Carpenter flagged the program on social media last week after receiving a random email from Largo.ai that promised “direct connections with producers and directors (by) allowing you to receive auditions directly from them.” It also said Largo.ai “will automatically suggest matching characters to producers/directors” and “you won’t be charged any commission for the roles you secure.”

Carpenter’s fear was that the program would essentially erase the role of casting directors, as well as agents and managers.
