Like many professional musicians, Roger Neill wears many hats: he’s an in-demand composer for film (including Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women” and “Beginners”), TV and radio (NPR’s “This American Life”). He’s an arranger and orchestrator for many musicians’ albums and tours (including John Legend and the French group Air), and a multi-instrumentalist fluent in everything from piano and guitar to the charango and the dobro.

It was the latter hat that became most useful when it came time to create the score for his latest project, HBO Max’s teen friendship comedy “Unpregnant,” which premieres September 10 and stars Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira. Though Neill had secured his composer role with the film prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, he didn’t have a rough cut to start work on the music until after quarantine and remote orchestral performances became the indefinite norm.

Remember Valley Girl? Back in the 80s, the romantic comedy helped usher in a new era for films. Eventually turning into a cult classic, the movie now has spawned a remake. Luckily, as misguided as that idea may have initially sounded, this take on the material, imagining it as a jukebox musical of sorts, has a surprisingly large amount of life to it. You must remember this... Filmmaker Mike Mills remembers a lot of things. His own life is the source material for his films. 2010’s Beginners was about his rough relationship with his father; now, 20th Century Women is about him growing up with his mother. Darkly comic, brutally honest, deliciously awkward, and provocatively “other,” 20th Century Women casts a literary tranquility all its own. As a late-1970s period piece, its sense of place and time, its careful quotations of other books, songs, and movies, the almost hypnotic, Philip Glass-lite -- in a good way! -- score by Roger Neill is compelling. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Justin Hurwitz composed and orchestrated the “La La Land” score, while “Jackie” marks “Under the Skin” composer Mica Levi’s second silver-screen effort. Decades after becoming one of the world’s most renowned film composers, Ennio Morricone won last year’s Oscar for his work on Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.

Collaborating variously with director Mike Mills over the years—most notably on Beginners—composer Roger Neill brought an ethereal synth-driven score to 20th Century Women, in the process reestablishing a connection with instruments he'd played as a child. Since the (very) black comedy Citizen Ruth announced him as a writer-director to be reckoned with, Alexander Payne has been one of the most consistently acclaimed American filmmakers of the last 15 years; he doesn’t make movies very often, but when he does, both critics and audiences take note. Recently, he released his latest, The Descendants, starring George Clooney. I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. 10 – Young Adult

One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the thriller Contagion directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Ehle, Laurence Fishburne, Brian Cranston and John Hawkes. The film’s music is composed by Cliff Martinez. A soundtrack album featuring the score by Martinez has been released by Watertower Music. Also opening wide is the drama Warrior directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison and Noah Emmerich. The movie’s score is written by Mark Isham. Roman Coppola has been working in the film business for over a decade, but he only has one feature to his name, that being 2001′s Cq. Sure, he’s done music video work and second unit material on the films of his father, his sister, and friend, Wes Anderson — whom he co-wrote The Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom with — but that’s not the same. Fans of his debut would certainly like to see a sophomore effort, so there’s some good news for them.

We learned last year that he would be jumping back into the fray, and ThePlaylist has dug up a little detail on the website for film composer Roger Neill — he collaborated with the director on Cq, while recently doing work for films like Beginners and Tanner Hall. Anyway, said website has a listing for Coppola‘s new project, which is called A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.

Briefly: It's been nine months since we heard anything about the new film that Roman Coppola is reportedly putting together. He's been busy working on music videos and collaborating on features, often directing second unit, with sister Sofia Coppola, father Francis and friend Wes Anderson. But it has been just over ten years since Coppola's one feature directorial effort, Cq. (A film that holds up quite well on repeat viewings.) So we're ready to see something new from the guy. Last year Sofia Coppola said [1] her brother was working on something new, but she offered no details, and reps for Roman Coppola were not forthcoming with more info. Now we've learned that the title of the film is A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. The Playlist [2] dug up the info on the website of Roger Neil, who scored Mike Mills' wonderful film Beginners. (He did some work on Cq as well.

Matthew Vaughn’s comic book adaptation X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence and Rosamunde Pike is expected to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is written by Henry Jackman and a soundtrack album has been released digitally earlier this week by Sony Classical. A physical release will follow on June 28. Relativity Music Group has announced a soundtrack album for the dramedy Beginners. The album includes the original score by Roger Neill, David Palmer and Brian Reitzell. Also featured on the soundtrack are several songs from the movie from artists including Hoagy Carmichael, Gene Austin, Josephine Baker and Jolly Roll Morton. The album will be released on May 31, 2011 and is available to pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added later this month. Beginners is directed by Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) and stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent. Focus Features will release the film on June 3.
