Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and Oscar winner Sam Rockwell hosted a private screening for Mike Leigh‘s “Hard Truths” at the Linwood Dunn Theater in LA Tuesday night. The audience filled with Academy members, press, and other invited guests gave actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste a standing ovation as she sat down with film critic and podcaster Kate Walsh for a post-screening Q & A.
Reunited with Leigh for the first time since she earned an Oscar nomination for “Secrets & Lies,” Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband, son, and anyone who looks her way. The film may sound dark, and there are plenty heavy moments, but there is also an abundance of laughter as the actress delivers one zinger after the next aimed at whoever stands in front of her.

The Denver Film Festival has announced the winners of its annual Audience Awards and Festival Juried Awards, with films like “Bob Trevino Likes It” and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” taking top prizes.
Following the conclusion of the 47th edition of the festival, which ran from November 1 to November 10, Denver Film Festival artistic director Matthew Campbell said via statement, “This year’s Denver Film Festival brought us fantastic films, phenomenal guests, and unforgettable experiences. The films recognized this year tell strong stories through powerful perspectives, providing viewers with the chance to see themselves on the screen while also seeing something completely new. We are honored to recognize so many voices, both new and familiar, and to bring those stories to audiences right here in Denver.”
It is worth noting that, outside of the audience favorite short film “Jellyfish and Lobster,” the audience award winners were not eligible for juried prizes.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle Best Actress, where Demi Moore’s odds have been steadily rising.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Nothing major happened this week but we’re still dutifully typing anyway. By the power of fate or maybe the calendar, the rotation has us back to Best Actress this week — perhaps apropos based on *waves hands* all this. When we last put fingers to keys about the Best Actress race, I was apparently on a bender: I didn’t have Angelina Jolie or Marianne Jean-Baptiste represented in my predictions, but I was all aboard for Amy Adams and Saoirse Ronan to make the final cut. I can only be me, but even reading that back makes my eyes roll. Needless to say,...

The 25-year-old star of “Anora” is about to add a Breakthrough Performance Award to her mantel.
Mikey Madison will accept the coveted prize during this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival — specifically at their awards show on Jan. 3, 2025, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The film festival itself runs from Jan. 2-13.
Sean Baker‘s “Anora” stars Madison as a Brooklyn stripper who gets married to a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn) in what’s being dubbed a “modern-day Cinderella story.” The film is currently Gold Derby’s Best Picture frontrunner at the 2025 Oscars, and it received a major boost earlier this year when it claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Prior to “Anora,” Madison appeared in popular projects like “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), “Scream” (2022), and “Better Things” (2016-22). She currently leads Gold Derby’s Best Actress Oscar odds, where her co-nominees are likely...

It’s been a gradual climb for Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actress, but it has paid off. The star of Mike Leigh‘s latest film, “Hard Truths,” now ranks among the top five likely nominees according to the combined predictions of thousands of our users. As of this writing she’s tied with Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”) at 11/1 odds.
Two months ago, on September 6, Jean-Baptiste was down in ninth place with 30/1 odds in the Best Actress race. A month later, on October 6, she was up to seventh place with 16/1 odds. Now she has finally cracked the top five with 17 Expert journalists predicting her nomination and one, Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), betting on her to win. This would be her second career nomination, following her Best Supporting Actress bid for Leigh’s lauded “Secrets and Lies” (1996). She would be Leigh’s third leading lady to be recognized by the academy.

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. Should it occur, she would be the ninth youngest Best Actress Oscar winner and the first since over a decade ago.

Experts slugfest mailbag: ‘Conclave,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ backlash, and who’s this year’s Cillian Murphy?
Is “Conclave” a Best Picture sleeper? Will “Emilia Pérez” endure backlash? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
“Conclave” has been a modest hit since opening in theaters last weekend. The gossipy papal drama has been sitting in third place in the Best Picture Oscar odds, but could it build enough consensus to actually win on a preferential ballot? Its strength could also pull in Isabella Rossellini, its sole supporting actress hopeful who remains in sixth place but continues to produce audience applause with her big scene in the film. Is her lack of screen time muddling people’s predictions?

Awards season is underway, and the Gotham nominations are only a small blip for what could be on Oscar voters radar.
While any nomination (or win) from any industry group marks a chance at gaining momentum, it’s important to remember the Oscar punditry golden rule: It’s not about what everyone wants to win, it’s about what will win. And critics are not Oscar voters. Each Gothams category is determined by a set of five distinct critics and journalists from various disciplines.
The slate of feature film nominees, with Sean Baker’s hilarious and moving dramedy “Anora” leading the charge with four nods, is yet another compelling reason to think that the Neon-distributed Palme d’Or winner has what it takes to go all the way in the race. On the other hand, I wouldn’t read too much into the complete shutout of films such as...

At this stage of the Oscar race, several things are certain. Palme d’Or winner “Anora” (Neon), which scored four nominations on October 29 for the first of the award shows of the season, the Gothams, remains the frontrunner in the Oscar race. Sean Baker’s film is followed by Netflix’s French Oscar submission “Emilia Pérez,” which was not eligible for Best Feature but didn’t land an international nod, either. Does “Emilia Pérez” need a Gothams nod in its pursuit of Oscar glory? No.

“Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.
“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.
“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning Anora from Neon has nabbed four Gotham Award nominations today including Best Feature, Best Director, Outstanding Lead Performance for Mikey Madison and Outstanding Supporting Performance for Yura Borisov.
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers from Orion/Amazon MGM was nominated for Best Feature. The studio’s Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross had noms for Best Feature and Best Director.
The indie-centric awards last year removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for bigger budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
A24 films were everywhere with multiple nominations for Babygirl, I Saw The TV Glow, Sing Sing and A Different Man. The Brutalist, Janet Planet and Love Lies Bleeding had noms as well.
The October noms and early December ceremony are industry bellwethers, coming at the start of awards season in the crush of fall festival buzz.

Mike Leigh is a filmmaker who has always evoked strong opinions, with your typical cinephile having their own takes on which films are strongest among his catalog. Certainly one of the highlights of his career has been Secrets & Lies, with the memorable pairing of Brenda Blethyn and his leading lady from this film, Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Her subtle work in that film, clashing against her brash co-stars, is often cited as one of the best performances from any Leigh film, earning her only Oscar nomination to date. Seeing her back in one of his leading roles, fans of the director and actress will be pleased to hear that their reunion brings us one of the best performances and films of the year.

Naomi Watts and a very big dog are heading to cinemas.
“The Friend,” a touching drama about a writer and editor whose literary mentor commits suicide and leaves her with his Great Dane to care for, has been acquired by Bleecker Street. The indie studio has nabbed North American distribution rights for an undisclosed sum — the sale took some time, which is something of a surprise given that “The Friend” received strong reviews when it showed at fall film festivals like Telluride and Toronto. It’s another reminder that studios are being more cautious when it comes to buying projects post-covid. The indie and arthouse theatrical market is still struggling to fully rebound from pandemic disruptions.
“The Friend” was written and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the team behind “The Deep End” and “What Maisie Knew,” and co-stars Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni and Ann Dowd.

If there’s one overarching theme within all of Mike Leigh’s films, it is a sense of naturalism. Leigh is a patient filmmaker who lets scenes play out to their fullest extent and does not conform to traditional narrative structures that impede the authenticity of what he is capturing. This general style has allowed Leigh to approach radically different topics, such as a tortured anti-hero in “Naked,” the London Opera in “Topsy-Turvy,” or a legendary British painter in “Mr. Turner.” With his latest work “Hard Truths,” Leigh turns his sights on the epidemic of anger that has seemingly swept the world over the past decade.
The notion of a filmmaker of Leigh’s experience reflecting on the generational divide could have easily been misconstrued as an embittered, older artist lashing out at a world that he no longer recognizes. However, “Hard Truths” doesn’t condemn just one generation, cultural shift,...

Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman are back in the Oscars race this year with their respective films “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” from A24, both already making the rounds in the awards contention with strong festival premieres. The stars are now looking to claim victory in their respective categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they both won these same races 22 years ago for “The Pianist” and “The Hours.” Can they strike gold for the second time and become the first duo in Oscars history to win the lead categories twice in the same years?
The year of 2002 was considered one of the most unpredictable Oscar seasons in multiple main categories. Starting with Kidman and “The Hours,” the Stephen Daldry movie took home Golden Globe Awards for Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Motion Picture, along with writing accolades for David Hare at...

While there aren’t any movies quite like Coralie Fergeat’s “The Substance,” there are plenty of over-the-top horror films about transformation, incredibly weird science, shared identities and losing your damn mind, like the 1981 cult movie “Possession,” pretty much every David Cronenberg movie, as well as offerings from Ken Russell, Peter Strickland, Julia Ducournau and Ari Aster.
Expect screaming, exploding heads, lots of blood and some of the most insane endings ever.

Isabelle Adjani has the mother of all freakouts in a subway in this role that earned her a César for Best Actress (the French equivalent of the Oscars) and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fest that year, but that’s not even the most mind-blowing part of the movie form Polish director Andrzej Żuławski. She’s also cheating on her husband (Sam Neill) with something that isn’t really human.

Nicolas Cage took to the stage at the 25th Newport Beach Film Festival on Sunday to urge up-and-coming actors from giving into pressure from employers opting to use artificial intelligence to change or otherwise manipulate their performance.
The veteran A-Lister was making a speech ahead of his Icon Award reception during the fete’s Honors Brunch taking place at the Balboa Bay Resort, which also featured honorees like June Squibb, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Colman Domingo and more.
“Film performance, to me, is very much a handmade, organic, from-scratch process,” the Longlegs actor said while uplifting young actors. “It’s from the heart, it’s from the imagination, it’s from thoughts and detail and thinking and honing and preparing.”
He continued, “There is a new technology in town. It’s a technology that I didn’t have to contend with for 42 years until recently. But these 10 young actors,...

In 1999, Orange County natives Gregg Schwenk and Todd Quartararo were working in the corporate sector but shared a love for cinema and producing events. They looked around their seaside locale and saw potential. “A beautiful coastal setting, surrounded by a vibrant business community and enthusiastic filmgoers, combined with our proximity to the film industry epicenter made Newport Beach the ideal place to launch an international film festival and build a world class event,” says Schwenk.
From those humble beginnings, Schwenk became the founder and CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival, which has since become an internationally recognized event. This year, Newport celebrates its 25th anniversary during its Oct. 17-24 run. It’s also become a stop along the awards campaign trail for Oscar hopefuls and a way to celebrate some of the biggest names in the industry. This year’s honorees include Oscar-winners Nicolas Cage and Christoph Waltz and Academy Award nominees June Squibb,...
