The 76th annual Emmys rebounded from its record-low viewership last year with a double digit percentage increase.

The second Emmys of 2024 drew 6.87 million viewers as it debuted from 5-8 p.m. Et on ABC, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures. That’s up 54% from the 75th annual awards ceremony, which scored 4.46 million viewers as it aired in January 2024 on Fox.

Overall, Sunday’s ceremony drew in the biggest audience the Emmys have seen in three years, since the show scored 7.8 million viewers during its CBS airing in September 2021, which was boosted by an NFL lead-in. Not only did the 76th annual ceremony outpace viewership for January’s record-low audience, but viewership for Sunday’s show also exceeded the previous all-time low of 5.9 million viewers for the 2022 show.

After last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony into January of this year, last night the glitzy statue-doling bash's 76th edition — this year hosted by Schitt's Creek's Eugene and Dan Levy — took place at the Peacock Theater in LA. And on a night of few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year — samurai epic Shōgun and kitchen-based "comedy" The Bear — got their hands ("Hands!") on 18 and 11 awards respectively, including historic Outstanding Actor and Actress In A Drama wins for the former's Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, and second Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor wins for the latter's Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

I have no clue if the expression “run it back” originated in sports, but I most frequently hear it in the context of the end of a successful season, when a player or coach or owner expresses the desire to keep all of the key pieces in place in order to repeat the prior achievement. Sometimes it works and a dynasty is born. Sometimes, though, an effort to run it back falls flat, proving how ephemeral the initial triumph was in the first place.

Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building went into Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys with 21 nominations, the third most of any series this year, with star Selena Gomez landing her first acting nod for her role on the show and Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd among the glitzy season three additions up for Emmy awards. And the show even got an early moment in Sunday night’s telecast with Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short presenting the first award of the evening after being introduced by hosts Dan and Eugene Levy, the latter appearing in the fourth, current season of Only Murders.

But while its fellow contenders at the top of the nominees peak (Shogun and The Bear) picked up numerous trophies on Sunday night, the star-studded murder mystery comedy failed to win a single award during the ABC telecast.

FX’s Shogun extended its reign over the 2024 Emmys on Sunday night. Going into the evening, the hit samurai series already held the record for the most wins by any show in a single year, having bagged 14 trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys a week ago. But the show further cemented its rule inside the Peacock Theater at the Primetime Emmys, winning an additional four awards, including the top categories of best drama series, best actress in a drama series for Anna Sawai, best actor in a drama series for Hiroyuki Sanada and best drama directing for Frederick E.O. Toye.

Shogun’s triumph is momentous on several fronts. The historic awards haul represents a huge win for FX and parent company Disney for a pricey series that took nearly 10 years to bring to fruition and once looked like a very uncertain bet. It’s also a major moment for Asian representation and non-English-language television.

Many of the hottest TV stars walked the Emmy Awards red carpet on Sunday in downtown Los Angeles. Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford enjoyed an exclusive spot on the celebratory afternoon, interviewing many of the celebrities who were nominated, presenting or part of their television show’s ensembles for Emmys 2024. Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.

Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.

Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

“The Bear” cleaned up at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, just not in the final category as so many experts predicted. And “Shōgun” proved more vulnerable than expected, not winning a single Emmy until two hours and 20 minutes into the show.

Billy Crudup Beats Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira from “Shōgun”

Yes, Crudup won this category in 2020 for “The Morning Show,” but that was in the pre-“Shōgun” times. And considering Crudup was up against two other “Morning Show” cast members, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, it seemed likely that that voters would split the vote among the three of them, opening up a potential path to victory for Tadanobu Asano from “Shōgun” — or his cast mate Takehiro Hira. In the end, voters more likely split the “Shōgun” vote, clearing the way for Crudup’s second win.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.

The answer was four, making the FX drama’s grand total of 18 Emmys the new benchmark for most wins by a program in a single year.

Television’s biggest night was held on Sunday (September 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, though many awards were also handed out last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony.

The FX series Shogun, which is streaming on Hulu, has won more awards for one single season of television than any other show in history. The series picked up 18 total wins for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series and lead acting awards for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and an incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday.

When Billy Crudup took to the Emmy stage to accept his second Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series win for the role of Cory Ellison in Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, his first thought was for his wife — and fellow nominee — Naomi Watts.

“I’m happy to be here with my piece of eye candy there, my wife,” he said after an initial thank you. He also noted, in a seemingly political aside, that “she happens to be an immigrant,” and went on to champion her for her “searing performance this year for which she’s nominated,” referring to her lead role of Babe Paley in anthology series Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.

Cory Ellison is forging a new path for himself in Season 4 of The Morning Show, after being left without a job at Uba at the end of the third season, Billy Crudup says.

The actor teased his character’s upcoming fate on the heels of his Emmy win on Sunday night, telling reporters backstage: “I never imagined him without a job or without succeeding.”

“I thought that was one of the things that was most enjoyable about playing [the character]. He never got down on himself, because he always had the confidence that he would, in the end, prevail very quick in his maneuvering,” Crudup continued. “So to face the daunting task of what comes next, I have left that to the writers, and they have delivered something very interesting. Billy Crudup earned his second Emmy win Sunday night for his role in Apple TV+’s The Morning Show.

The 56-year-old actor took to the stage to accept the best supporting actor in a drama series award at the 2024 Emmys and immediately offered praise to his wife, fellow Emmy nominee Naomi Watts. “I’m happy to be here with my piece of eye candy there,” Crudup said to kick off his speech.

“My wife, who also happens to be an immigrant and also gave a searing performance for which she’s nominated, and she starts businesses too, so it’s nice to be by her side,” he continued. Watts is nominated for best actress in a limited series or anthology for her role as Babe Paley in FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
