Another day, another sign of industry support for Emilia Pérez.

On Wednesday, the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its 2025 Scl Awards nominations with Netflix’s Spanish-language cartel musical out in front with three nominations.

The ceremony will take place on Feb. 12.

Emilia Pérez composers and songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille earned three nominations as did Atticus Ross, who received two nominations for Challengers and one for the television series Shōgun.

Other highlights: Diane Warren was nominated for The Six Triple Eight, the sixth consecutive year she’s up for an Scl Award. Harry Gregson-Williams and director Ridley Scott will also be honored with the Spirit of Collaboration Award, “which recognizes a composer/director relationship that has created a prodigious body of work.”

The duo has worked together seven times, including this year on Gladiator II.

Just one Coen brother is behind the twisted action comedy Drive-Away Dolls which just dropped a new trailer. Ethan Coen goes solo, writing, directing and producing a film that escalates from a simple roadtrip to encounters with drug dealers, hitmen, a senator, and a mob boss.

Margaret Qualley (Poor Things) and Geraldine Viswanathan (The Beanie Bubble) star as the road trip participants, Jamie and Marian. The ensemble also includes Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) as Sukie the cop, Colman Domingo (Rustin) as The Chief, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as The Collector, Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) as Curlie, and Matt Damon (Oppenheimer) as Senator Gary Channel.

Back in March 2023, the Austin-based collectibles and poster company Mondo was hit with a wave of layoffs from parent company Funko, including the company’s former co-founders and creative directors. Today, those leaders have announced their comeback.

Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek have teamed up with CEO Jenny Jacobi to form a new company called Mutant, which will release limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.

The company is being formed underneath SpectreVision, Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s genre-bending production company. The company is kicking off its launch with a vinyl soundtrack for Netflix’s “Society of the Snow.” The LP features artwork from Mo Shafeek adorning the score from composer Michael Giacchino as well as liner notes from director J.A. Bayona.

The Society of Composers & Lyricists will honor Martin Scorsese and the late Robbie Robertson with the Spirit of Collaboration Award at this year’s Scl Awards on Feb. 13.

This award recognizes a “composer/director relationship which has created a prodigious body of work.” Robertson and Scorsese’s collaborations have included Raging Bull, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Past recipients of the Spirit of Collaboration Award include Thomas Newman and Sam Mendes, Terence Blanchard and Spike Lee, Carter Burwell and the Coen Brothers and last year’s honorees Justin Hurwitz and Damien Chazelle.

“Inheritance,” “The Accident” and “Good Bad Things” are among the award winners at the 30th annual Slamdance Film Festival. The winners were announced Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Park City – The Yarrow in Park City, Utah.

The three films feted the Feature Grand Jury Prizes, while the Audience Awards went to “African Giants,” “Demon Mineral,” “Good Bad Things” and “Night Drives.”

The festival also announced the recipient of their Agbo Fellowship from Slamdance alumni Joe and Anthony Russo. It went to Kiarash Dadgar, whose short film “The Steak” was programmed as a part of the Narrative Shorts competition and included a $25,000 prize with mentorship from the brothers.

“This year’s award-winning films leave an indelible mark on the world of independent cinema. Each one delves into groundbreaking storytelling and the spirit of human resilience, highlighting the extreme filmmaking talent on show at Slamdance ’24,” Taylor Miller, Slamdance director, said in a statement.

Volker Bertelmann has won the film composer of the year at the 23rd World Soundtrack Awards (Wsa), which took place tonight (October 21), at the closing night of Film Fest Gent.

Bertelmann was nominated for his scores for War Sailor, All Quiet On The Western Front and Memory Of Water. Other nominees in this category included Carter Burwell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Catherine Called Birdy and To Catch A Killer and Hildur Guðnadóttir for Women Talking and Tár.

I don’t know where to start on “Finestkind,” the saccharine, incomprehensible northeastern America fishing family drama from writer-director Brian Helgeland. As I watched this turgid muddle, a messy ball of nonsensical threads and worse performances, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Roger Ebert’s old maxim: No good film is too long, and no bad film is too short.

But what about a film so driven off course it needs a come to Jesus moment? “Finestkind” is that sort of picture. Clunky, nauseating, and perfunctory, it’s shocking that before the World Premiere screening in Toronto Helgeland called the movie a deeply personal work, the type of film he wished had been his first, and the kind he fears might be his last.

The introduction was enough to make you hope for a merely mindlessly entertaining flick. Unfortunately, “Finestkind” doesn’t even pass that lowest of bars.

Ethan Coen’s first narrative feature film as a solo director looks an awful lot like some of the beloved comedic collaborations Coen made with his brother, Joel Coen, during their decades-long career together – particularly “Raising Arizona” and “Fargo.” On Friday, Focus Features released the first trailer for “Drive-Away Dolls,” the new comedy thriller Ethan Coen directed by himself and also co-wrote and produced with his wife, Tricia Cooke.

A sample of some of the comedy on display in the feature, which focuses on two young women (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who run afoul of a bunch of inept criminals – including one shady figure played by Matt Damon:

While watching Academy Award-nominated “The Banshees of Inisherin,” whenever I thought I would cry, I would laugh at the next scene as the film cleverly balanced comedy and melancholy. One element of the storytelling that helped guide that balance was the soundtrack composed by Carter Burwell. German musician Volker Bertelmann nudged out the competition to pick up his first Academy Award Sunday for Netflix’s war epic All Quiet on the Western Front.

Mindy Kaling and John Cho presented the award to Bertelmann, who thanked his All Quiet colleagues.

“I want to thank the cast and crew for their amazing craftsmanship and to Netflix for their huge support and to my fellow nominees,” Bertelmann said as he picked up the award.

This year’s nom is Bertelmann’s second Oscars nod. He was last nominated for his musical work on Lion (2017), starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara. He shared the nomination with co-composer Dustin O’Halloran.

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Original Score Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our current odds indicate that “Babylon” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “The Fabelmans” (4/1), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2).

Four of the seven individual artists included in this lineup are returning contenders, with the newcomer subset consisting of Son Lux bandmates and fellow “Everything Everywhere All at Once” nominees Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott. Bhatia and Chang are two of only nine Asian composers to ever achieve academy recognition and could become the first such champions since A. R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) in 2009.

“Babylon” only has three Oscar nominations, but if you go by the odds, it will win two of them: Best Production Design, which it’s dominated all season, and Best Original Score, where Justin Hurwitz has recently lost some ground to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” composed by Volker Bertelmann. That race could come down to the wire and wind up a whole lot closer than the composers’ first Oscar showdown.

Hurwitz and Bertelmann have faced off at the Oscars before, though you might not realize it at first glance. Bertelmann also performs under the name Hauschka, which was how he was credited for his “Lion” (2016) score, co-written with Dustin O’Halloran. That season, Hauschka and O’Halloran lost the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, BAFTA and Oscar to Hurwitz, who swept for “La La Land.”

While it was obvious Hurwitz would win the Oscar back then, that’s not the case this time around.

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.

Volker Bertelmann, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’

Composer Bertelmann grew up reading the 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front’ when he was in school, which served as the basis for the 1930 Best Picture winner and the new 2022 Netflix adaptation. He recalls the advice that director Edward Berger gave him about how he wanted to film to sound: “I want to have a music for the stomach of Paul Bäumer, who’s the main protagonist. I want to have destruction. And I want to have a snare that is played by somebody who can’t play the snare…...

Almost exactly one year ago, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” premiered at SXSW. The sophomore feature from the two-headed directorial entity known as Daniels — aka Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — had plenty of hype going into the festival, as the GenX filmmaker had already garnered a decade of fans for their music video work, with bonus points for the silly-sweet gamble of their 2016 feature debut “Swiss Army Man.” Yet even the visionary concept of an island castaway riding a farting corpse to freedom couldn’t have prepared audiences for the cultural phenomenon to come.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was an instant sensation with almost as many layers as the multiverses strewn across in its plot. It’s an innovative and hilarious sci-fi comedy about the messiness of modern life, a touching exploration of intergenerational Asian American identity, and a rousing showcase for Asian actors long under-appreciated by the industry.

If there’s going to be a surprise win in Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, look no further than “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Aside from its Golden Globe win for Best Film Musical/Comedy, “Banshees” failed to take the top prize with any major group this season, but that didn’t stop it from mounting upsets in other key categories. If the dark horse spirit that earned it major Globe and BAFTA wins continues into Oscar night, director/writer/producer Martin McDonagh could find himself with his first Oscar statuette in a feature film category.

McDonagh is already an Oscar winner for his 2006 live-action short “Six Shooter,” but he came up short for his work on the feature films “In Bruges” in 2009 and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018. Legendary composer John Williams broke records again by becoming the most nominated living person, earning the highest number of nominations ever in the music categories, and becoming the oldest nominee ever for a competitive award. He is 91.

His nomination for “The Fabelmans” surprised some outsiders, as his fairly spare score is often overshadowed by the several classical pieces performed by Mitzi (Michelle Williams), the character based on director Steven Spielberg’s piano-playing mom. But it passed the 35% rule — that is, more than a third of the total musical content must be original dramatic score — or it would have been disqualified by the Academy’s strict music-branch executive committee.

For Searchlight’s The Banshees of Inisherin, composer Carter Burwell reunited with Martin McDonagh after collaborating with the director on In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Using such instruments as the harp and the celesta, he began composing the score while focusing on Colin Farrell’s Pádraic, building upon the tragedy and sadness that his character encounters throughout the film. In total, the score took six to eight weeks to compose, though he’d already begun coming up with ideas for the music while McDonagh was filming. “In the end, it almost became more like a fairy tale,” Burwell tells THR. “The score pushed it into a world where it’s a little bit more an allegory than a story that might have truly happened.”

You have frequent collaborators, Martin McDonagh among them. What makes you want to work with a specific filmmaker again?...

Carter Burwell is now nominated for his third Academy Award. The composer's latest collaboration with Martin McDonagh, "The Banshees of Inisherin," captures both familiar and almost indescribable feelings. There is loneliness in the whispers of the strings, as well as instrumentals that help make viewers question what it all means in McDonagh's film.  

Burwell is the composer behind a long list of modern classics. He's the Coen Brothers' go-to composer and scored "Barton Fink," "Fargo," and "Miller's Crossing." He regularly collaborates with filmmakers Todd Haynes, Spike Jonze, and Brian Helgeland. Simply put, he's one of the best. Recently, we interviewed Burwell to discuss his work in "The Banshees of Inisherin."

'We All Are Trying To Let The Words Be Their Own Melody'

You don't compose the more dialogue-heavy scenes. Did you and Martin talk about that, or is that just your personal taste?...

It’s anybody’s game: this is a rare year when any of the five original-score nominees could win the Oscar. Two of the nominees are previous winners, two more are past nominees; only one is a newcomer, and it’s a three-man ensemble.

Four films are period pieces: an admired German-language war film, a character study set against the Irish civil war, an epic of late 1920s Hollywood, and a coming-of-age story for a young filmmaker in the ‘50s and ‘60s; the fifth is a wild, anarchic tale of a Chinese American family that saves the universe.

Best Actor Oscar nominee Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Rob Licuria about being “fortunate enough” to be consistently drawn into great scripts, plus his gratefulness for this specific project. The Irish actor plays Pádraic Súilleabháin in Martin McDonagh‘s period film from Searchlight Pictures, a simple man who can’t fathom why his drinking buddy (Supporting Actor nominee Brendan Gleeson) wants to suddenly end their friendship.

After dominating the BAFTAs with seven wins, Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” just went from Oscars wild card to potential juggernaut in the craft races, where it is tied with “Elvis” for the lead with six nominations. In addition to the BAFTA-winning three categories, Edward Berger’s German-language World War I epic also grabbed nominations for makeup and hairstyling, production design, and VFX.

“All Quiet” appears to be on a similar Oscar trajectory as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2001), which also scored six craft noms. That’s a record for international features. Ang Lee’s martial arts spectacle (co-starring “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh) eventually won a record three craft awards: cinematography, original score, and art direction-set decoration (now production design). “All Quiet” hopes to at least match its success.

This year, the Baftas were held away from the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in seven years, with all the action taking place at London’s Southbank Centre.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.

At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).

Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

The 2023 Bafta Film Awards show is taking place today (February 19) from London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank this year (it was previously at the Royal Albert Hall).

The show started at around 18:00 UK time, finishing at approximately 21:00, and will be broadcast with a time delay on BBC One starting at 19:00, with the final four awards broadcast live for the first time.

The Bafta nominations for 2023 have been announced – and a huge record has been matched.

Leading the pack with 14 nominations is Netflix’s German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which has equalled a record previously held by Ang Lee’s 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

With 14 nods each, both films are the two international films to have received the most nominations in Bafta history.

Following close behind with 10 nominations each are The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Other films battling it out for the top awards include Elvis, Tár and British film Aftersun.

Wednesday night at the 2023 Scl Awards (Society of Composers & Lyricists), Michael Abels won the award for top studio film score for his work on “Nope,” while Ryan Lott and his experimental band Son Lux earned the statuette for Outstanding Independent Film Score for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The 4th annual gala took place at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was a champion along with Alexandre Desplat and Roeban Katz in the Outstanding Song for a Musical or Comedy category for the tune “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Also scoring a victory in a song category was the legendary Diane Warren, who became the first songwriter to receive an honorary Oscar in December. She accepted her award in Outstanding Song for a Drama or Documentary for “Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman.

The composers of the scores to “Nope” and “Everything All at Once” and songs for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” have won the film awards at the fourth annual Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, which were handed out on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Michael Abels won for “Nope” in the Outstanding Score for a Studio Film category, where he was up against Oscar nominee Carter Burwell for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” as well as the scores for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “The Batman” and “Don’t Worry Darling.” In the Outstanding Score for an Independent Film category, the award went to the only Oscar nominees in the category, Son Lux for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Diane Warren won the award for a song from a drama or documentary film for “Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman,” while Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz and Guillermo del Toro won for the song “Ciao Papa” from “Pinocchio.

The Society of Composers & Lyricists (Scl) presented the winners of the 4th Annual Scl Awards for score and songs in visual media tonight at the Skirball Cultural Center.

The evening was hosted by Darren Criss, who also gave the audience a musical performance. Awards were presented across seven categories for music in visual media in addition to the Spirit of Collaboration Award and two Jury Awards.

The Spirit of Collaboration Award was presented to Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz and Oscar-winning filmmaker Damien Chazelle. The composer and filmmaker have collaborated on five films, including Babylon, La La Land, Whiplash, the First Man, and Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. The presentation of the award was accompanied by a musical performance including “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from La La Land, the First Man theme for harp and theremin, and a Babylon Medley, including “Voodoo Mama” and “Herman’s Hustle.

This year’s Oscar race for Best Original Score is the most interesting and competitive in years. You’ve got surprise composers Son Lux (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Volker Bertelmann (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) going up against 90-year-old legend John Williams (“The Fabelmans”) and returnees Justin Hurwitz (“Babylon”) and Carter Burwell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).

Which means there are several unusual components to this race. Four out of five films are Best Picture nominees (with “Babylon” as the outlier) and period pieces (with “Eeaao” as the contemporary multiverse entry), and there’s old-school versus new-school, with experimental rock band Son Lux taking on four celebrated vets: Williams has five Oscars and a record 53 nominations; Hurwitz has two Oscars for “La La Land” (score and original song “City of Stars”); and Burwell and Bertelmann have three and two nominations, respectively.

And not a clear favorite among them.

Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Scores that sound like frontrunners are disqualified for a variety of reasons, from the number of credited composers to the amount of previously recorded music used. Starting with the 2019 Oscars, the academy released a shortlist of 15 contenders. We got this year’s roster of semi-finalists on December 21, 2022. A second round of voting by the members of the music branch, again using preferential voting, will cut these 15 down to the final five nominees. These will be announced, along with the final contenders in all of the other competitive categories on January 24. Colin Farrell is basking in the glow of delivering four acclaimed performances in 2022 and receiving his long overdue first Oscar nomination for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Next, he’s gearing up to reprise his role as Oz — a.k.a. the Penguin — for the spinoff television series to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which he starts shooting on Feb. 28.

“It’s going to be an eight-part thing,” Farrell tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film.
