Look at some of the best sci-fi movies of all time, and chances are you'll find a whole bunch of mayhem. Destructive events and deadly encounters with the unknown often go with the territory, to the point that it can sometimes be difficult to envision a work of science fiction that doesn't rack up a significant body count before the end credits roll.
But it doesn't always have to be that way. While mortal danger is an easy way to create stakes and showing people die is the easiest way to establish danger, there are plenty of methods of making a sci-fi project interesting without killing off half the cast. This doesn't mean that the space Marines have to put down their laser rifles and settle their differences with the alien invaders over a game of Canasta, either. Many sci-fi films have found ways to provide thrills without any fatalities...

Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment This year, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of Back to the Future Part II, a film that continues to amaze both longtime fans and new audiences alike. While some initially viewed the sequel with mixed opinions, it has since earned its place as a beloved installment in the franchise. Older fans are now revisiting it with fresh appreciation, while a new generation is discovering the film’s daring vision and iconic story. Back in 1989, creating the futuristic world of 2015 and scenes where characters meet their past and future selves was no small feat. With CGI still in its infancy, director Robert Zemeckis turned to groundbreaking practical effects. One standout moment featured Michael J. Fox playing multiple members of the McFly family seated at the same kitchen table. This scene required meticulous planning and execution, showcasing Zemeckis’s expertise and creativity as a director. As much as we still see Michael J. Fox at various events – whether to bring awareness to Parkinson’s or partake in Back to the Future reunions – we still miss him. That is, we miss seeing him perform. While Fox hasn’t had a substantial role on the big screen since 1996’s The Frighteners – made a few years after his Parkinson’s diagnosis and two years before he even announced it – he has leaned into television with recurring roles on shows like Boston Legal, Rescue Me and The Good Wife, all of which earned him acclaim. And just like we miss seeing him on screens both big and small, Fox himself misses certain aspects of the art.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Michael J. Fox said what really misses about acting is the collaborative process that a set brings, saying, “You go into something and you say, ‘I know what to do here,...

Seeing the funny side of an insidious disease like Parkinson’s isn’t easy, but it beats battling Parkinson’s with a straight face.
When Michael J. Fox first started to show symptoms of early onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991, his doctors told him that, within a few short years, his career in entertainment would be over and he would no longer be able to act professionally. The diagnosis drove the Back to the Future star into a deep depression as he grappled with the possibilities and the realities of his future. But for the next three decades, he never stopped entertaining, as experts believed he would be forced to do, and, critically, he never stopped laughing. While Fox formally retired from acting in 2020, his work to battle Parkinson’s through the Michael J. Fox Foundation continues, and during a recent fundraising event, he says that he also fights to...

For Hollywood stars, hearing that a project "went another direction" with casting choices isn't a rare occurrence. Sometimes an actor just isn't the one filmmakers are searching for -- but it's always better when they're told this before the cameras start rolling. Over the years, plenty of projects have ground to a halt because one of its core players just aren't clicking with what's on the page, resulting to an alternative choice taking over.
There are also times, however, when a passing comment or a personal blunder can lead to someone being ejected without question. It not only changes the trajectory of the project, but can also lead another actor ending up with a thriving future that could've been someone else's. Here's a list of box office break-ups that could've resulted in a very different film, leaving the original choice...

Michael J. Fox admitted that maintaining his legendary dark sense of humor is actually a bit of work. The actor told People that it’s “hard for me” but “I gotta keep it intact.”
Fox spoke to the outlet at his annual A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s fundraiser Saturday. He also said that his brand of humor helps him break through barriers with others when conversations get difficult. “That’s true. And it’s okay,” he explained. “Let’s embrace that and make a difference.”
This year’s gala event was hosted by Denis Leary and featured a performance by Stevie Nicks. Fox made it clear how much he appreciated their work for the event. “I can’t believe — a lot of these people I’ve known for years and years — they’re so kind to me,” he said. “I think because they see an opportunity for a win,...

For a few years in the '80s, it felt like Phoebe Cates was everywhere in Hollywood. The child of an entertainment-focused family (her dad was a prolific producer of stage and screen), Cates made her on-screen debut in 1982's "Paradise," a controversial film that's best-remembered as a sort of off-brand "Blue Lagoon" story that featured Cates' underage character nude (the actress was 17 at the time of filming). According to Cates' costar Willie Aames, the nudity in question was filmed by body doubles, but the discourse surrounding the movie would inform Cates' place in pop culture before she even came of age.
Cates' most famous roles would come soon after, and by 1994, she would largely be retired from acting entirely. So why did Phoebe Cates leave Hollywood? The answer is hers to share, and interviews she and her family have given both during her on-screen career and after it ended have been pretty enlightening.

The 1980s wasn’t just a decade, it was the cinematic revolution that gave us teased hair, neon clothes, and some of the most unforgettable movies ever made. It was a time when movies gave us stories that became timeless and the characters felt like old friends with memorable one-liners. From John Hughes’ high school comedies to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi flicks, a world without ‘80s movies is almost unimaginable. Today. The classical tales of the ‘80s are embedded in our pop culture, reflected in everything from today’s biggest blockbusters to late-night comedies.

What’s the best time-travel movie of all time? According to astrophysicist Carl Sagan, it’s not the thoughtful sci-fi approaches of Time After Time, Looper or Edge of Tomorrow. The best compliment Robert Zemeckis ever got was when the famed cosmologist bestowed that honor on his comedy, Back to the Future.
Sagan told Zemeckis that the Michael J. Fox movie featured the best time-travel scientific theory he’d seen in a movie. “I didn’t tell him I took it from H.G. Wells,” the director confessed to Bill Maher on a recent Club Random podcast.
“It’s funny to watch a movie about time travel when you are now 40 years past when the movie was made,” Maher observed about jokes that were funny in 1985 about traveling to 1955. “You know, ‘If you know everything about the future, who is president in 1985?’ Ronald Reagan. ‘Yeah, right. And I’ll bet Jerry Lewis is vice president.

Robert Zemeckis, the director and co-creator of Back to the Future, is shutting down the idea of remaking or creating a sequel to the franchise.
In a new interview, the filmmaker revealed that he would only revisit the world he co-created with Bob Gale if he created a movie musical.
“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a Back to the Future 4, it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Zemeckis said Universal has asked him if he was open to revisiting the Back to the Future universe, joking that the studio does it “every six months.”
“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical,” Zemeckis said. “Just like [Mel Brooks] did with The Producers. I would love to do that.

The 1985 film spawned two commercially successful sequels but has since remained dormant, especially in an era where Hollywood is looking back at the past for a successful formula, with reboots and remakes becoming the prevalent trend.

Robert Zemeckis confirmed during an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Universal Pictures is often checking in with him to see if he’d be interested in making a fourth “Back to the Future” movie. His answer remains “no,” although he would be interested in developing a film adaptation of “Back to the Future: The Musical,” which recently announced it will play its final Broadway performance on Jan. 5, 2025.
When asked on the podcast if Universal begs him “every couple years” for “Back to the Future 4,” Zemeckis joked: “Oh, every six months.” He then clarified that was “just an exaggeration” but said Universal does frequently check in with him about another sequel.
“‘Isn’t there anything we can figure out to do here?'” Zemeckis said, imitating the studio. “‘Isn’t there anything we can do?'”

Thought may be the most powerful force in the space-time continuum. As Doctor Emmett L. Brown says in "Back to the Future," the act is the one and only key to guaranteed success: "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." This is why any system of control seeks to quell (if not eradicate) free thought as its primary goal because those behind such systems rightfully understand that thought is the biggest threat to their maintaining power. Although governments and censorship boards banning art can be done under a variety of pretenses — this is deemed obscene, that is deemed offensive, and so on — what censoring or outright banning art really does is keep people in line.
Of course, that doesn't mean censorship always makes a ton of sense. Numerous instances of censored or banned art feel absolutely baffling. For instance, did you know that depicting someone head-butting...

Here’s why Disney rejected Back To The Future (Photo Credit – Amazon Prime Video)
When Back to the Future hit theaters on July 3, 1985, it flipped Hollywood. Michael J. Fox went from TV star to mega-celebrity, while director Robert Zemeckis made waves. Despite getting rejected by Disney for being “too scandalous,” the film ended the year as a box office champ, leaving fans craving more time-travel adventures!

Nobody Wants This, Netflix’s hit series about an interfaith relationship between Adam Brody’s rabbi and Kristen Bell’s podcast host, enjoyed a smooth path to a prompt season two renewal. The same can’t be said for CBS’ similarly themed sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie, which debuted 54 years ago.
Created by Bernard Slade (The Flying Nun), the series provided an early-career role for Meredith Baxter as Bridget, a wealthy Irish-Catholic teacher who weds Bernie (David Birney), a Jewish cab driver.

Hulu has greenlighted Phony, a comedy pilot starring and executive produced by Connie Britton, from Drew Goddard’s Goddard Textiles and 20th Television.
Written, directed and executive produced by Nick Paley (Marcel The Shell With Shoes On), Phony is a comedic coming-of-age mystery about a teenager, Sonny, who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom — his only parent and his best friend — appears to have been replaced by an impostor.
Britton will play Sonny’s single mom Ellen and the principal of his high school.
The pilot brings Britton back to her comedy roots — she started her career with an arc on Ellen before landing a lead role opposite Michael J. Fox on Spin City.
Britton and Paley executive produce Phony alongside Charlie Alderman of Charlie’s Production Company and Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg via Goddard Textiles. Goddard Textiles’ Andrea Massaro is a producer.

Fox’s Marty McFly going back in time to rescue Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) from the old west, always went a little underappreciated by fans. Why?
Truth be told, as good as the two sequels are, neither quite manages to outshine the 1985 original, which ranks as perhaps the most impeccably crafted blockbuster of all time. For his follow-ups, Robert Zemeckis was ahead of his time in that he shot both movies back to back as one giant film, allowing him to release them six months apart, at Christmas of 1989 and the Summer of 1990. In fact, Back to the Future: Part II ended with a trailer for the third film.

Today, Apple Original Films unveiled the trailer and poster for Bread & Roses, a powerful new documentary offering a window into the seismic impact that the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021 had on women’s rights and livelihoods. Bread & Roses will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on November 22, 2024.
The documentary film follows three women in real-time as they fight to recover their autonomy. Director Sahra Mani captures the spirit and resilience of Afghan women through a raw depiction of their harrowing plight.
Bread & Roses, an Eyan Foundation presentation in association with Extracurricular, is produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi with Mani, alongside executive producers Malala Yousafzai and Farhad Khosravi. The documentary was a Cannes Film Festival selection and Cannes Golden Eye nominee.
“Closing girls’ schools in Afghanistan is not just a matter of feminist concern; rather, it is a matter of international security,” said director and producer Sahra Mani previously.

In nearly 30 years of creating or co-creating series from Spin City to Scrubs to Bad Monkey, Bill Lawrence has been one of TV’s most reliable sitcom showrunners. He has a great eye for talent in front of and behind the camera. He has a sharp sense of humor and an innate feeling for how to create a warm atmosphere that viewers will want to spend time in week after week, season after season. And he really, really knows how to course-correct.

Filmmaking can be a pitiless business, particularly for actors. While it's true all creatives are being judged on their personal attributes, performers face the added pressure of having to embody the physical and emotional attributes necessary to play a given part. This means they're being hired or rejected based on their very appearance and essence as a human being. This is rough for anyone, but especially brutal for young actors who are in the midst of puberty or just on the other side of it. Furthermore, it can be rough on the folks behind the camera; an actor still getting comfortable within their growing body might dazzle in an interview, but once you get them on set, they're just not right for the part. Just ask the tremendously talented thespian Tamzin Merchant and the folks responsible for bringing George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" to life for HBO. They...

A new showbiz festival, unlike any other, is coming to Napa Valley.
The inaugural Napa Valley StreamFest, which is set to take place April 24-27, 2025, will highlight podcasts, series, films and anything else that, well, streams — through screenings, live recordings, panels and parties — all in beautiful wine country.
“After working for twelve years at some of the top film festivals, I realized that the traditional festival model isn’t evolving with the ever-changing world of ‘streamertainment,'” StreamFest co-founder and executive director Fearon DeWeese said in a statement. “We’re launching Napa Valley StreamFest to celebrate all the ways we stream and binge entertainment — a variety show of content from indie films to viral TikToks. With our festival model, guests aren’t racing from one theater to the next; it’s a curated experience programmed to binge — to watch together while connecting in person and experiencing what Napa has to offer.

Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Fox (in his final role before disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis) as the astute deputy mayor of New York City.
Over the years, as their paths continued to cross at social events, Vaughn and Lawrence would keep tabs on each other’s progress. Vaughn became one of the most bankable stars of R-rated comedies in the late ’90s and 2000s, headlining box-office hits such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Dodgeball. Brett Goldstein, who co-created Shrinking alongside Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence, is headed to the screen this season, thanks to the urging of Segel.
Season two of the Apple TV+ comedy — following grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel) as he breaks the rules and tells his clients exactly what he thinks — sees Goldstein joining the cast in a surprisingly dark role; Lawrence admitted he initially shot down the Ted Lasso star for the part, until Segel changed his mind.
“I made a mistake that I think audience members make sometimes when you equate somebody to a part they played. This needed to be an empathetic, sweetheart of a guy and in my head I’m like, ‘No, Brett’s more like [Ted Lasso character] Roy Kent.’ And then I’m like, ‘What am I talking about? He’s such a sweetie and he’s so lovely as a person,'” Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.

Lea Thompson took a while to warm up to Michael J. Fox after Eric Stoltz’s Back to the Future firing
Dozens of major names circled the role of Marty McFly, but only one man could get it…Well, make that two. While Eric Stoltz was originally cast in the Back to the Future role, director Robert Zemeckis would ultimately decide he wasn’t right for the part, canning him less than two months into filming. With that, Michael J. Fox would step in and help make modern movie history. But for Lea Thompson, it took quite a while to get used to her new co-star.
Appearing on the Still Here Hollywood podcast (via EW), Lea Thompson said she was initially distant to Fox, thinking his TV work on Family Ties wasn’t up to snuff with her big screen successes…“I remember specifically being really snooty because there was a big division between movie stars and TV stars at that point. Fox created the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support research in finding a cure for Parkinson’s.
Fox received much attention when he went public with the disease, and even received a call from Muhammad Ali. “For some reason, I returned his call from the phone in my bathroom. In the mirror I could see my eyes welling up as he said, in his eloquent whisper, ’I’m sorry you have this, but with both of us in this fight, we’re going to win now.’”
Fox realised that it was no longer a question of if Parkinson’s could be cured, but when. Thus began his involvement in senate hearings and the creation of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Full Metal Jacket to Oppenheimer; West Wing to Stranger Things, Modine is a showbiz hard worker whose latest role is as a cycling coach. Ask your questions in the comments
Matthew Modine has worked with lots of the greats: Stanley Kubrick, as wise-cracking marine Jt “Joker” Davis in Full Metal Jacket; Jonathan Demme, as a goofy FBI agent in Married to the Mob; John Schlesinger, as a hapless landlord in nightmare-tenant thriller Pacific Heights; Alan Parker, as the avian-obsessed kid in Birdy; and Robert Altman (twice) in Streamers and Short Cuts. “Sadly, I also lost an investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others. And I’m sure you’ll understand why it’s too late for me, because I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This is also a cause dear to my heart,” he shared (via Variety).
His statements were in reference to a drug company called Prevacus. The founder of that company, Jacob VanLandingham, actually admitted he used Mississippi welfare funds to pay his debts and subsequently, ended up pleading guilty to wire fraud.

Plot: A deep dive into the life of Christopher Reeve, from his overnight stardom as Superman through to his life after the tragic accident which left him a person with quadriplegia.

Indeed, as the premiere screening wound up, the sobs from the audience were pronounced, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is certainly a heartbreaking experience. A visit from Dax Shepard meant a trip down movie memory lane for Woody Harrelson this week on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. First, Harrelson complained about censors and their “pretty random” cuts to one of his first movies, Natural Born Killers. The edits “really worked to the detriment of the artist’s vision,” he said.
But that wasn’t Harrelson’s first break on the big screen. “I’m just remembering you actually did White Men Can't Jump before that, right?” asked Shepard. “Was that the first big shot off of Cheers you got?”
Not quite. “Just before that,” Harrelson clarified, “I did Doc Hollywood with Michael J. Fox.”
The mention of Doc Hollywood got co-host Ted Danson’s attention. “You know what? Fuck you.”

The Friends actor says he regrets not going for the role made famous by Will Smith, but could he have made ‘I make this look good’ as good?
Hollywood is full of tantalising “what-if?” moments; decisions made on the spur of the moment that have far-reaching repercussions for all involved. What if Robert Zemeckis had persevered with Eric Stoltz on the Back to the Future set, rather than bringing in Michael J Fox? What if Tom Selleck had played Indiana Jones instead of Harrison Ford? What if, as initially wanted by the film’s producers, Robert Altman had directed Alien?

The Back to the Future franchise has been successful in more ways than one. On top of breaking records and shocking audiences in the direction that the science-fiction genre can go, the film was also massive when it came to cultural significance. The first film was single-handedly able to completely change the way the genre would go in the future.

However, the rest of the films weren’t far behind. The second film, for example, ended up being responsible for quite a big shift in another classic fantasy series. However, they likely didn’t expect their involvement in a star-studded environmental event to get them pulled over. The young actors were busted for smoking pot out of the open hatch of a Greyhound bus filled with a who’s who of famous faces.

After years of estrangement, it doesn’t appear that Prince Harry and Prince William‘s relationship will be mended anytime soon. A source claims that the next time they see each other, it could very well be after the death of their father, King Charles.
Prince Harry and Prince William may not face off until King Charles dies
In an interview with The Daily Beast, a source close to Prince William confirmed rumors about Prince William’s coronation. William reportedly has no plans to invite his only brother to this titular moment.
“Why would William and Kate want all the distraction and circus that his presence would bring? I suspect that William will see Harry one more time in his life in the flesh — at their father’s funeral,” the source claims.
“It is hard to overstate how utterly William feels betrayed and hurt on a very personal level. The...

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “The Bear” is a sure thing winner for Best Comedy Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally the heavy favorite with its 23 nominations and has remained the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race. The same is true of ““Shōgun” for drama after its giant haul of 25 Emmy bids. And nothing can beat “Baby Reindeer” for Best Limited Series, right? Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”) is a shoo-in for limited supporting actress, isn’t she? And no one could possibly beat Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”) for comedy guest actress – could they?
But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even when it comes to shows and people considered locks.
