That Time Gal Gadot Faced Controversy Over Her Casting as Cleopatra—Here’s How She Responded to the Backlash! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Gal Gadot‘s casting as Cleopatra sparked controversies on race and representation in Hollywood. Her 2020 announcement resulted in excitement and echoed criticism from past portrayals, notably Elizabeth Taylor’s in the 1963 Cleopatra—while Netflix’s Queen Cleopatra faced backlash over its casting choices.
The anticipation surrounding Gadot’s Cleopatra was palpable. Teaming up with filmmaker Patty Jenkins and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, she wanted to tell Cleopatra’s story from a woman’s perspective. The project saw delays, but Gadot remained optimistic. She told Flaunt, “It’s a big task. I don’t want to [rush] making it— it needs…so much thought and care because it’s Cleopatra.” Her commitment to portraying the queen with the depth she deserved was evident.

The Savoy Hotel is a five-star hotel located in London. This hotel is committed to crafting a uniquely British experience, as evidenced by the food offered and the style of architecture. Upon visiting their website, you can tell the uniqueness of their identity means alot to them: in an attempt to flesh this out, they have an entire tab dedicated to “Savoy Experiences.” While there are many things to gush about that carve out a distinct sense of self for this hotel, perhaps the most notorious and distinct thing of all is that it was the Queen’s favorite hotel. Artists and famous elites alike have also enjoyed spending time here. As one would guess, this garnered it another nickname amongst the British people: London’s most famous hotel.
That fact alone should be enough to tantalize someone into booking a stay at the Savoy, but I’ll continue to provide some more facts anyway.

In 2002, Aaliyah played Akasha, the first vampire, in the film Queen of the Damned. Critics generally disliked the film, but she spoke about her excitement to take on the role, describing it as a “dream” part. It provided a chance to establish herself as an actor and, she said, she loved vampires. She explained why she sometimes felt like the creatures in her real life.
Aaliyah said she sometimes felt like a vampire
While Aaliyah was a major star, she didn’t want to sacrifice any of her privacy. She said she had even been this way before fame.
“I’ve always been mysterious,” Aaliyah told Vibe Magazine in 2001. “My mother and father always used to ask me, ‘What are you thinking, what’s going on?’ There are times when I don’t understand myself, you know what I mean?”
Her desire for privacy began to make her feel like a vampire.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Those who were driving through the intersection of Highland and Fountain in Los Angeles in the early 2000s got to know Tommy Wiseau very, very well. It was at that intersection that Wiseau chose to buy a billboard for his then-new film "The Room," and it featured a rather unflattering closeup of the man, staring directly into the camera, one of his eyes half-closed. The billboard stayed up for five straight years, costing Wiseau $5,000 a month.
It worked, though. Enough Angelenos drove past the billboard to become curious about "The Room" and seek out a screening at the Sunset 5 theater nearby. Those who saw it in those early days were utterly baffled. "The Room" is an intense infidelity drama about an all-around good guy named Johnny (Wiseau) whose fiancée Lisa (Juliette Danielle) instigates an affair with Johnny's best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). “More effort than it’s worth” possibly represents the harshest 5 words that can be strung together in the English language. For a film, that statement guarantees an immediate death sentence. In the case of Antonio Banderas’ The 13th Warrior, it spelled the extinction of an entire genre: the Muslim hero archetype.

Both films represent a central character destined for a greater purpose who is uprooted from their established life and thrown into a mission against a foreign enemy.

Although the title suggests it, Lonely Planet is not some outer-space sci-fi adventure, not even remotely. Perhaps it could have been called something more evocative of its tried and true genre, but writer/director Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) has crafted a somewhat standard and certainly familiar romantic drama about two people facing up to new self-revelations as they meet, talk, and finally hook up at a writers retreat in beautiful and remote Morocco. This kind of thing hinges completely on aligning with its stars, and with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth passing the chemistry test with flying colors, Grant gets an ‘A’ for casting and placing them in an irresistible location that doubles as travelogue. What more do we need?
This is the kind of grown-up romdram Hollywood used to regularly serve up for adults and Grant isn’t reinventing the wheel here. There is oddly some comfort in the...

It looks like business as usual at Brentwood’s Country Mart.
Laptops and lattes sit on every table at Caffe Luxxe’s patio. Around the corner, a woman corrals two teens near luxury décor shop Hudson Grace. “Let’s go to Goop real quick,” she declares loudly in directing them toward a pitstop at Gwyneth Paltrow’s curated store. The pastry counter at Farmshop has a queue four deep, though the lunch rush is winding down. One wouldn’t be surprised to see Country Mart regulars like Larry David or Jennifer Garner on a quiet, sunny Wednesday afternoon like this.
The quietude of the scene belies the tumult that occurred here just days before. A few feet from Diesel Bookstore’s entrance, this reporter is scanning a window display when a Diesel staffer approaches from a courtyard nearby. “Can I help you?” he asks. Forgive the direct approach, he adds,...

Although Nicole Kidman recently accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in recognition of her four-decade acting career, there is no indication that her life’s work is anywhere near finished. Indeed, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the 56-year-old is well on her way to picking up her sixth Oscar nomination for her lead performance in the critically acclaimed “Babygirl,” which would make her the 13th AFI honoree to subsequently earn film academy recognition in a competitive category.
The fact that Kidman’s life achievement award was presented by her pal and costar, Meryl Streep, is quite fitting given that she’s the only woman to go from being an AFI recipient to an Oscar contender. Since receiving the AFI honor in 2004, she has racked up a whopping eight bids, including a successful one for “The Iron Lady” (2012). A previous champ for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1980) and...

It’s understandable that most movie and TV fans remember Maggie Smith for her dynamic work in the “Harry Potter” films and “Downton Abbey.” More recent and far more widely seen in their time, they are worthy examples of her outstanding work.

Dame Maggie Smith was many things. Hilarious and tragic. Elegant and aloof. Enchanting and deadly serious. Most will attribute their appreciation of her multiple-generation spanning career to roles in the “Harry Potter” or “Sister Act” franchises or perhaps “Downton Abbey,” which elevated her fame to a level she often spoke disdainfully of. For Smith was not an actress who was in it for the red carpets or accolades — though she received many, including two Oscars, five Baftas, four Emmys, and a Tony — but rather treated acting as a sturdy profession, one that required of her the utmost presence while on set or stage.
Beginning her career in the early 1950s, she played Viola in William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at The Oxford Playhouse, followed later by roles in “As You Like It” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at London’s famed Old Vic theater. She rose to prominence on...

She despised hypocrisy and was fiercely loyal to her friends, while navigating the pressures and pleasures of being the world’s biggest star. Chris Wilding discusses the legend and legacy of the mother he loved
Chris Wilding is a shy man approaching 70. As a little boy, he was also shy. He used to get embarrassed when his mother turned up at school for parents’ day. Everybody made such a hoo-ha about it. There she would be, in her furs and finery, done up to the nines. She was so famous and infamous, sexy and scandalous, and he would never hear the end of it. And yet to him she was just Mom.
Elizabeth Taylor was the world’s best-known actress, becoming a global celebrity at 12 after starring in National Velvet. By the age of 35, she had won two Oscars, first for playing sex worker Gloria Wandrous in the 1960 film BUtterfield 8,...

The ‘rebel superstar’ was decades ahead of her time, a new three-part series produced by her protégé Kim Kardashian shows
Elizabeth Taylor’s life has traditionally been portrayed as a torrid soap opera. A tale of sex and scandal: eight marriages while dripping in diamonds and battling addiction. But a new documentary tells a different story – and Kim Kardashian is helping rewrite the script.
Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, a three-part series that airs on BBC2 from Friday, reframes its subject not just as a double Oscar-winner but as a business mogul and trailblazing activist who rewrote the rules of fame.

Kate Winslet is in her “life is too short” era, and we all here for it. Known for speaking her truth, the Oscar-winning actor has been making headlines while promoting her upcoming biopic Lee, in which she portrays renowned photojournalist Lee Miller. Winslet’s viral comments have included pushing back when a crew member had advised her to suck in her stomach to hide her “belly rolls” during a topless scene and subsequently dismissing her reaction being hailed as “bravery.”
In an interview during History Channel’s History Talks at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Saturday, Winslet continued speaking her mind on the topic.
“I quite like making statements. And actually, I have to say, I’m at the point where I’m just like, You know what? Life is too short,” she said onstage. “But it is one thing that’s been happening to me quite a lot recently,...

Most people, born in or after the 1970s, have grown up watching the films of Steven Spielberg. As a definitive storyteller and the most influential director in Hollywood, Spielberg has unbridled access to the fantasies and imaginations of children and adults alike through films like Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and E.T. But even legends of such great standing can sometimes have a peevish trait.

It’s been 16 years since Christine Jeffs’ last feature, the seriocomic Amerindie sleeper “Sunshine Cleaning,” with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. Her new feature “A Mistake” hews back to her 2001 debut, “Rain,” in that it is set in her native New Zealand and adapts its script from a Kiwi author (in this case Carl Shuker’s fifth novel). Though not a knockout, the director’s return affirms her knack for intelligent adult drama, here hinging on issues of medical ethics and bureaucracy — Elizabeth Banks plays an Auckland surgeon whose reputation and career are threatened when a patient dies after what had been anticipated as a routine procedure. Quiver Distribution is releasing the Tribeca-premiered film to 100+ U.S. theaters this Friday.

Is Colin Farrell married?
Colin Farrell is an accomplished actor. As anyone watching Sunday night’s Emmy Awards can attest, he is also one of the handsomest actors on the planet.
He’s had some complex relationships — a few got downright messy — over the years.
But is he married at the moment? Asking for a friend, of course.

In 2000, Colin Farrell met Amelia Warner, a singer and a fellow actor. Their relationship was fairly brief — from July of 2001 through November of that same year.
There was speculation, however, that the two had covertly married. No one has ever been able to prove this claim, however.

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

Shonda Rhimes, Michelle Monaghan, Chloe Fineman and Camila Alves McConaughey were among the front-row attendees for the debut of Wes Gordon’s Spring 2025 collection for Carolina Herrera — each is a terrific example of the smart, stylish women who have loved this label since Mrs. Herrera founded her house in 1981.

Celebrity divorces last longer than celebrity marriages, and perhaps afford the public more sheer entertainment. Hearing about the clashing of egos, the mutual narcissism, the profligacy — it all makes us rather relieved to be living our littler, more anonymous lives.

Currently, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, who said “I do” two years ago in Las Vegas, are hiring their attack dogs, i.e. their expensive attorneys, to argue about ownership of a $60 million-plus house in Beverly Hills, which has twelve bedrooms and twenty-four bathrooms.

70mm is back! Thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan, one of the oldest and grandest traditions in Hollywood is making a comeback after years of financial setbacks and near-extinction. As Nolan has said many times, shooting in 70mm proved an immersive and more textured experience than any other form of cinema.
Due to the costly nature of film and theaters’ lack of 70mm projectors, it’s been quite a challenge to get to a place where Tarantino and Nolan can make entire features using 65/70mm, but the preservation of film is turning in their favor.
Below, we’ve gathered 20 of the most essential 70mm film releases. From Stanley Kubrick to William Wyler and David Lean, it’s clear shooting in 70mm is mandatory for any epic filmmaker.
With additional editorial contributions from Zack Sharf.

Known as Hermione, the brightest witch of her age, Emma Watson became an overnight sensation when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released in 2001. But what most don’t know is that her journey to stardom was almost derailed by the very thing that made her famous.
As a child actor, Watson was thrust into the spotlight at just nine years old. While the Harry Potter movies catapulted her to global fame, it also took a toll on her mental health. The actress almost quit the industry while filming for the last few movies. TMZ reports that Jennifer Lopez made the move to file her official split from Ben Affleck on August 20th, which turns out to be the second anniversary of their more formal wedding (having wed in Las Vegas the month prior). Traditionally, the second anniversary gift is cotton, which is appropriate since the two are sleeping under separate sheets now.

When news of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s divorce broke today, two years after they married and two decades after they first fell in love, entertainment reporters began invoking Burton and Taylor, another celebrity couple who famously separated and reunited. Baylor – as no one called them – married in 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975 and divorced again less than a year later. But Bennifer – who were never condemned by a pope, but did earn the first...
