Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Horror is cheap to make and cheap to parody and, for that and other reasons, attractive to make and to parody. Caesar and Otto's Paranormal Halloween (2015) is a parody horror film for the YouTube age. Caesar and Otto are the creation of writer/directer/actor Dave Campfield where two underachieving brothers who find themselves in horror stories. Here, Caesar (Campfield), Otto (Paul Chomicki), and their drunken father (Scott Aguillar) agree to housesit the evil governor's (Ken MacFarlane) second home over the winter. Craziness ensues with potential possessions, maybe murderous gardeners, hot neighbors, and three dopes caught up in more horror references than they can handle.

Admittedly, prior to seeing Caesar and Otto’s Paranormal Halloween, I’ve never heard of writer/director/actor Dave Campfield’s Caesar and Otto. What I can best describe as the modern throwback to classic comedy duos like Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy, the half-brothers’ past adventures have involved things such as summer camp, Dracula, Dracula’s lawyer, Christmas, […]...

It would be pointless – not to mention foolish – to judge Caesar And Otto’s Deadly Xmas by the same standards as other films. This is chiefly because if we did we’d have to face up to the fact that this Christmas-themed horror/campfest doesn’t even deserve in the same VHS bargain bins as the films it clumsily imitates. That said, if the only movies people ever enjoyed were the good ones then…well, Netflix wouldn’t exist, for one thing.
With that in mind, I decided to view Caesar And Otto in the spirit in which I hope and pray it was intended: with tongue firmly embedded in cheek. It’s a good thing I did so immediately, as an early scene sees the recent recipient of...

Many of the cast and crew behind Deadly Xmas will be returning for this new installment as well. Dave Campfield, whom Josh Pasnak of Video Graveyard hails as "one of the more impressive talents to come out of the indie scene in a while," returns to direct and star (as Caesar), and he will write the screenplay from a story he co-wrote with Joe Randazzo (returning from Deadly Xmas and fresh off his Golden Palm nomination...

Let me get this out of the way right off the bat: I’m friends with the director of this film, Dave Campfield. He’s a Long Island guy. I’ve interviewed him in the past. He’s a funny, charming and passionate dude.
He’s created a pair of characters in Caesar and Otto that are actually pretty funny and so absurd that the various situations they find themselves in match their absurdity. Caesar (played by Campfield himself) is an over-excited actor with illusions of grandeur. Otto is a slob, relatively grounded foil for Caesar. They’re perfect for eachother.

I remember a time, not too long ago, when it seemed that combining horror and comedy successfully was a near impossibility. Don't get me wrong; there have been good ones, but most of them were too goofy, tried too hard, or simply could not blend the two genres well enough to service either. Hopefully Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre will buck that trend.

Caesar and Otto is a new entry into the horror-comedy genre, and it looks to follow in the footsteps of such laugh riots as Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Fido and of course Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

I was handed this scrappy-looking DVD with a partial eyeroll and a shoulder shrug. Looking at the rinky-dink website with no salient journalism information (Photos? Runtime?) caused even less excitement. A sequel to 2007's "Caesar and Otto" (No? You haven't heard of it either?), Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre looked like it was going to be porn without the porn. Imagine my elation on discovering that writer/director/producer/star Dave Campfield is talented and well-versed in the language of film.
Despite the DVD cover and website doing the movie no favors, Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre is actually a funny broad comedy, with bigger appeal than the niche horror-comedy crowd it is being marketed to. It is directed and edited with such panache that I could see it appealing to many fans of the Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler ilk who wouldn't and don't...
