In 2019, an offbeat viral news story caught the attention of Jack Boswell, a radio presenter for the BBC and podcast producer from London. A man in Mumbai, India, was poised to sue his parents for birthing him without his consent, arguing that life is suffering and the planet would be improved if humans stopped reproducing. The absurd legal action never went forward (the would-be plaintiff’s parents were both lawyers, no less), but the symbolic threat threw a spotlight on the philosophy he was articulating, known as anti-natalism.

Doug Stanhope fans were understandably alarmed when men who appeared to be members of a Swat team showed up during his Instagram livestream last night, forcing him to the floor and leading him off to, well, no one knew what happened to Stanhope.
Reddit boards were filled with arguments about the arrest’s validity. Some fans were certain the video was too real to be a prank. Others argued that some of the men’s guns didn’t appear to be loaded, a sure sign that what we were seeing was a dupe.
So who was right?
Turns out, no one — at least, not exactly. TMZ is reporting that the incident was neither real nor a comedy goof. Instead, a spokesperson for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Stanhope had given permission to local authorities to use his Arizona home for a training mission for the county Swat team.

“Yooo, anybody catch Stanhope getting arrested?” asked user ChicanoGoodfella on the Doug Stanhope subreddit last night. The short answer: Yes, a lot of people caught it. The longer reaction: Something definitely happened. But what was really going on?
On his Instagram livestream, Stanhope “was talking about it being his 34th anniversary of starting comedy,” according to Twitter/X user @shroomfactory. “Then there was a knock at the door — and he said ‘idk who that is — no one I know would knock.’ and then the raid started.”
Live video captured and shared on Twitter/X appears to document Stanhope being apprehended by multiple men carrying large weapons. A backlit figure — Stanhope, according to viewers of the livestream — is on the floor, following the armed men’s instructions. When he’s finally led outside, we hear a loud, “Relax, dude!” A second man is also taken into custody as the men at the door yell,...

Greg Fitzsimmons’ You Know Me, an exceptionally tight comedy special dropping tonight on YouTube, is one of those shows only made possible by decades of flexing comedy muscles in clubs. “I’ve been doing it for a long time,” Fitzsimmons conceded when I talked to the comic this week. “I go on the road 30 weekends a year, and when I’m not on the road, I’m in L.A. pounding out sets locally. And it’s been like that from the beginning.”
Fitzsimmons, who came up in the Boston scene alongside comedians like David Cross, Marc Maron and Bill Burr, talked to me about keeping it fresh as a stand-up, getting started in the business alongside Joe Rogan and rubbing shoulders with other notorious comedians along the way.

For Raanan Hershberg, this year marks perhaps the most productive of a 15-year career in stand-up.
Just a couple of weeks after the release of Brave, his third comedy special self-produced and released via YouTube, he’s taking to the internet today with It Could Have Been Better, his fourth special and his first to be produced by an outside company.
Directed by Jason Katz and James Webb, Brave sees Hershberg riff on the notion of a “brave comedian,” a label that’s been applied to him by some online trolls given his tendency to aim jokes at those on both side of the political spectrum. If there’s a theme to the special, he says, it’s “the way dogma can keep you from having a more objective sense of reality, and the ways extreme thinking can kind of lock your brain down, and how it’s so important...

Amber Heard hasn’t yet taken the stand, but Joe Rogan has taken a side.
Rogan and guest Jessica Kirson, a fellow comedian, opened Tuesday’s episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” riffing on what we’ve seen so far of Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife. From the way Rogan characterized it, he doesn’t believe Heard’s claims about abuse at the hands of Depp – or much of anything else the “Aquaman” actress says.
“I’m watching this trial, and like, it’s a cautionary tale,” Rogan said, beginning with a critique of their tempestuous relationship. “About believing in bullshit, forming a narrative in your head like, ‘We’re rebels together.’ That’s what I felt like about Anthony Bourdain and his relationship to that crazy woman … you’re seeing all the crazy come out.”

The dystopian noir classic Blade Runner took place in 2019, a fair 37 years after it first hit theaters. At the time, this seemed an appropriately distant but still-relatable jump in time to discuss the disjunct between humans and extremely humanoid robots, who look, think, and feel human but must grapple with the fact that they aren’t. The first taste viewers get of this cognitive dissonance is a chap named Leon, who, in the film’s opening scene, betrays the sort of subtle inconsistencies of thought that indicate a rogue replicant in need of execution—or, in the film’s parlance, “retirement.” He doesn’t ace the test, but he ends up finding a way out of it just the same.
Anyway, even though he looks like a full-grown man, and also like comedian Doug Stanhope, Leon here is only 2 years old in the film’s fiction, meaning ...

"I think I'm failing very well doing what I love." Well Go USA has debuted a quirky trailer for an indie dramedy titled Punching Henry, a semi-autobiographical look at the life of comedian Henry Phillips. Henry is self-described as a "rambling troubadour extraordinaire" who combines folk music with stand up comedy in an awkward little act. Lured to Los Angeles by a veteran TV producer, Henry ends up making tough decisions about chasing fame and success. The cast includes J.K. Simmons, Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, Jim Jefferies, Doug Stanhope, and more. This looks like a heartwarming, amusing little gem that hopefully profiles Henry Phillips in the best light, even if he doesn't achieve success. It's worth a look.
