Doug Stanhope fans were understandably alarmed when men who appeared to be members of a Swat team showed up during his Instagram livestream last night, forcing him to the floor and leading him off to, well, no one knew what happened to Stanhope.

Reddit boards were filled with arguments about the arrest’s validity. Some fans were certain the video was too real to be a prank. Others argued that some of the men’s guns didn’t appear to be loaded, a sure sign that what we were seeing was a dupe.

So who was right?

Turns out, no one — at least, not exactly. TMZ is reporting that the incident was neither real nor a comedy goof. Instead, a spokesperson for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Stanhope had given permission to local authorities to use his Arizona home for a training mission for the county Swat team.

“Yooo, anybody catch Stanhope getting arrested?” asked user ChicanoGoodfella on the Doug Stanhope subreddit last night. The short answer: Yes, a lot of people caught it. The longer reaction: Something definitely happened. But what was really going on?

On his Instagram livestream, Stanhope “was talking about it being his 34th anniversary of starting comedy,” according to Twitter/X user @shroomfactory. “Then there was a knock at the door — and he said ‘idk who that is — no one I know would knock.’ and then the raid started.”

Greg Fitzsimmons’ You Know Me, an exceptionally tight comedy special dropping tonight on YouTube, is one of those shows only made possible by decades of flexing comedy muscles in clubs. “I’ve been doing it for a long time,” Fitzsimmons conceded when I talked to the comic this week. “I go on the road 30 weekends a year, and when I’m not on the road, I’m in L.A. pounding out sets locally. And it’s been like that from the beginning.”

Exclusive: Stand-up comic Greg Fitzsimmons announced today that his new special, Greg Fitzsimmons: You Know Me, will premiere on his YouTube channel on Tuesday, August 27.

Filmed at The Comedy Mothership in Austin, TX in November, the special marks his second hour on the heels of 2013’s Life on Stage, which premiered on Comedy Central before moving to Netflix and is now available to stream on Prime Video.

You Know Me finds Fitzsimmons reflecting on 34 years of sobriety, sex with a 57-year-old woman, convincing your children that you’re cool, and combating loneliness on the road. And he realizes, he’s happy where he is.

Fitzsimmons directed the special and also exec produced alongside Matt Schuler. Producers included 800 Pound Gorilla, Jarad Clement and Valentijn Sloot.

A well-respected veteran comic, Fitzsimmons has been working as a stand-up for 35 years and has also thus far put out two half-hour specials for Comedy Central.

Comedian Mitch Hedberg is set to be the focus of a forthcoming documentary, nearly two decades after his death.

Director Jeff Siegel, who is nominated for a 2024 Emmy, is helming the feature that has wrapped principal photography after a filming process that began five years ago. The project, which is currently untitled and does not yet have a planned release date, is set to include archival footage, home movies and interviews with loved ones, childhood friends and fellow comics.

The filmmakers have conducted more than 100 interviews across the country for the film. Among those offering perspective on Hedberg’s life and career are Lewis Black, Jim Gaffigan, B.J. Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has locked down rights to The Road Dog, a dramatic comedy set in the world of stand-up that stars veteran comic Doug Stanhope (The Man Show). The film will enjoy a week-long theatrical engagement at Pickwick Theatre in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge from September 1-7 and become available across North America on digital October 6th.

Immediately following the evening shows on both Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2, Stanhope and newcomer co-star Des Mulrooney will be present for Q&As with the filmmakers. Tickets can be purchased now.

Vice TV will debut “Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11” on Sept. 8, days before the 20th anniversary of 2001 attacks. The Pulse Films documentary features interviews with entertainers including David Cross, Nathan Lane and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor’s place in the aftermath of the attacks that day.

The documentary’s title takes its name from the response Gilbert Gottfried received after cracking a joke about the airline attacks shortly after they occurred. The dystopian noir classic Blade Runner took place in 2019, a fair 37 years after it first hit theaters. Heard filed her suit against Stanhope in June, claiming that he had defamed her with an article stating that Heard had blackmailed Depp. “Defendants’ statements are completely false and highly defamatory,” Heard’s lawsuit claimed. “Defendants are engaged in a classic case of ‘attacking the victim,’ in an effort to discredit Heard, destroy her good name and reputation, and severely harm her hard-earned entertainment career, on top of the campaign.
