Is it those piercing eyes with the glint of mischief? The impossible body? The sexiest bald head since Captain Picard? The manscaping as performance art?
It’s all of those things, and much more, that make director/writer/actor/producer/Ultimate Horror Himbo Joe Zaso such an imposing and endearing presence.
Today is his birthday, so let’s pay tribute with a look at some choice moments from his career.
Joe has appeared in over 20 mostly low budget, mostly horror films over the last 15 years, frequently as the villain. Here he is as the evil doctor in 2010′s Virus X.
He’s the actual New Jersey Devil!
My personal favorite – Joe’s “Cafe Himbo,” in which he cooks with faboo figures from cult films of the past. Here he is with Catherine Mary Stewart from Night Of The Comet and The Apple.

Richard Ciupka’s unfairly maligned 1983 horror film Curtains was screened recently as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies 7 exhibition that also included screenings of Lucky McKee’s new film All Cheerleaders Die, Michele Soavi’s highly regarded Cemetery Man (1994), Eli Roth’s new film The Green Inferno, John D. Hancock’s ultra creepy Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971), the New York premiere of Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed - the Cabal Cut, and Peter Carter’s brilliant Rituals (1977), better known as The Creeper, which stars Hal Holbrook and Lawrence Dane in a film that is clearly influenced by John Boorman’s Deliverance (1971) but easily stands on its own as a strong piece of independent filmmaking.
Appearing in person at the Curtains screening was actress Lesleh Donaldson who played Christie Burns, the ice skater in the film.

I recently heard that one of my friends had caught H1N1. In all serious and embarrassment, I wildly proclaimed, "She has an Std"?! Upon further examination of my rash thought however, I realized that the H1N1 virus merely seems like an after thought these days. Its peak had passed and a little more over a year since then, its name bore no meaning to me. Virus X aims to use the threat of H1N1 and the people still crazy about its existence, to its advantage. Unfortunately it simply becomes a boring and at times laughable account of a virus we no longer seem to care about.

Despite having only several titles released this week in our beloved genre, some of them are deemed very worthy of our hard-earned dollars.
While there were strong initial feelings about a Us remake of a damn near perfect foreign film, the end result is hauntingly accessible to fans of both the book as well as its film adaptation, Let the Right One In. How will you feel about it? Decide for yourself this week. Once you're done with your decision making, raise your Hatchets high and get ready to have a bloody good time because the movie they didn't want you to see is finally here! From there after slugging it out in the swamps of Louisiana, get ready to face off against extraterrestrials in Gareth Edwards' Monsters!
So, go forth and bring home these gems. You know how we feel about them.

Aahh! Giant leeches! They're ripping my clothes off!
Halloween is nearly upon us once again, and for some of us it conjures memories we would rather keep suppressed. For instance, the little boy who went out one Halloween wearing a Thundarr mask he got from Woolworth and a fabulous sun sword he made from a whiffle bat.
The night went well until he got home and emptied the contents of his goodie bag and found 2 business cards, 3 mini-bibles, used wax lips, a brown banana, and someone's dentures. Oh, and worst of all - candy corn.
Needless to say, that child was scarred for life from properly celebrating the gayest holiday of them all.
Fortunately, the energy he could have spent trick-or-treating every year was instead spent becoming a horror aficionado, with a special focus on the hot guys that provided eye candy in between the, well, horror.

Brian S- First off, how'd you get into film making?
Swp- I’ve always loved film and I guess it was just a product of being raised in the right era for horror. It’s a clichéd story but it’s a true story. My relatives never looked beyond the rating of a horror film to allow me to watch it and there were some movies I remember seeing in the theater.

Are werewolves the new zombies? Well, with the recent success of Zombieland, zombies are still the new zombies. But every few years, we seem to be subjected to a spate of werewolf projects. We’ve got the troubled remake of the Wolf Man coming up with Benicio del Toro, for one thing. Vampire fiction seems practically overrun with werewolves as side characters or enemies. The cult reputation of the Ginger Snaps trilogy continues to grow. And the low budget horror scene has a bit of full moon fever, with Beast- ahem, Timo Rose’s Beast...

Fango heard from busy indie-horror actor Joe Zaso, who’s done a number of New York-area and overseas fright flicks and recently made a trip to La to co-star in a sci-fi chiller called H1N1: Virus X. He sent along a couple of photos (see them below) and comments on the currently lensing movie, directed by first-timer Ryan Stevens Harris.
Executive-produced by Domiziano Arcangeli (of Orgy Of Blood, which we previously reported on here) and veteran B-meister David S. Sterling and co-starring The Devil’S Rejects’ Priscilla Barnes, H1N1: Virus X casts Zaso as Dr. Gravaman, an evil scientist who performs twisted experiments on human guinea pigs. It’s “not too far a stretch” from the types of roles Zaso has been regularly playing lately, he tells us: “This seems to be the year of the troublemaking doctor roles for me. First was Braincell, which was...

Rock star extraordinaire Aine Leicht dropped us off a couple of stills for Domiziano Arcangeli's latest film The Occultist for your enjoyment, and one of them just brings the biggest evil smile to our faces! Ah, indie filmmaking! How we love the balls that you exhibit at times.
Before we get to the stills ... a little background. Arcangeli is teaming up with producer David S. Sterling on two new horror films: the currently shooting The Occultist and H1N1 Virus, which goes into production in mid-September.
The first of the two films, already in production, is The Occultist. Directed by Novin Shakiba (Deadly Little Christmas), the film tells the story of a group of medical students at a prestigious university who try to evoke evil spirits with sinister results. Domiziano co-stars with Ursula Vari and Rachel Reynolds.

Fango recently spent a day on location with the new horror short Something Just—specifically the basement of filmmaker Scott W. Perry (pictured left). Here, sadistic serial killer Thomas Sutcliffe, portrayed in a bit of against-type casting by East Coast horror stalwart Alan Rowe Kelly, terrorizes a bound, captive girl played by genre newcomer Joslyn Jensen. You can see some exclusive pics from this and other Something Just moments below.
Perry’s follow-up to his vampire story Insatiable (which we covered here) also stars Jerry Murdock as the guardian of one of Sutcliffe’s victims, who goes to an old friend (Joe Zaso) to seek vengeance; in the process, dark secrets from the past are revealed. This is the first production of Perry’s Slick Devil Entertainment to be lensed in 1080p high definition, with cinematographer Dominick Sivilli creating an oppressively creepy atmosphere in the smoke-suffused basement as Kelly manhandles and murders Jensen.

Day Three
On Sunday I tried to make it to the Vindication panel to see writer/director Bart Mastronardi and his cast, but just couldn’t do it as I had NewFest commitments. Later I did race from NewFest (in Chelsea) to the con to catch the Vindication screening. I got there about 10 minutes late, but the room was standing room only. I’ve already seen the film, so I’m glad my butt wasn’t taking a seat from someone who hasn’t seen this really f-ing awesome film. Keep an eye out in this blog for more info and interviews from the cast and crew in the near future.

If you were lucky enough to attend Fango’s recently wrapped Weekend of Horrors, you hopefully were also fortunate enough to check out the phenomenal short Insatiable, which screened on Sunday. As much about vampirism and fetishism as it is about a dwindling marriage, the flick is a rare silent pleasure, harking back to the days when creating films was more about experimentation than making money.
“Insatiable really started out of my frustration from trying to sell a feature script of mine in 2004,” writer/director Scott W. Perry reveals. “I kept on inquiring to many production companies looking for scripts, but the answers were all the same: no vampires, because they’ve been done to death. I had just left a job at A&E, where one of my duties was to watch their prime-time programming before it went to air for quality control. Now, it was reality shit, but...

As the site's resident horror hound, I'm always on the lookout for queer horror stories to share that don't involve being forced to recap late-season episodes of Brothers & Sisters. (Zing!)
Enter Fangoria, the longest-running and most venerable horror publication, which for decades has been serving up scoops, reviews and musty must-see curiosities to genre fans everywhere. This weekend the mag is hosting its Weekend of Horrors in NYC (at the Javits Center) and it's giving gore-gore gays like me plenty of reasons to attend, the least of all being the premiere of A Far Cry From Home, a nasty hate-crime cautionary tale from queer filmmaker Alan Rowe Kelly.
Kelly and I have been friends for years (you may remember him from the Blood Work! True Blood vlog series) but we met professionally, at a horror film festival in San Francisco where we both had films showing. We've been tight ever since,...

New York-based indie genre actor/filmmaker Joe Zaso gave us the first look at the poster for his latest feature Braincell (pictured left), which he recently produced and starred in for director Alex Birrell. He also passed on a pic from a genre short he recently appeared in called Immune; you can see both images below.
Braincell is a sci-fi chiller filmed in Britain and Italy, starring Zaso as a professor at a university where his niece (Zaso’s frequent co-star Raine Brown) encounters grotesque experiments. Indie filmmaker Bart Mastronardi gave Fango the first word that the official website for his psychological shocker Vindication has just gone live. It was designed by fellow East Coast frightmeister Alan Rowe Kelly, who also has a small role in the movie.

Ok, so you East Coasters are feeling left out from all the La convention madness we’ve been announcing the last few weeks (see recent news here)? We need more movies about violent experiments, damnit! Luckily that's exactly what we get when it comes to Alex Birrell's new film Braincell! Fangoria.com got the first peek at the trailer, and I've gotta say it looks pretty damned violent!

The producers of the new sci-fi shocker Braincell gave Fango the exclusive first look at the movie’s trailer; check it out below the cut. The preview features a nice amount of blood, and also a bit of skin, so it ain’t work-safe!
Directed by Alex Birrell and lensed in Liverpool, England and Naples, Italy, Braincell (which we last covered here) stars Raine Brown as a young woman who discovers horrifying experiments with violent results taking place at a university where her uncle (Joe Zaso, also one of the producers) is a professor. Darkness Surrounds Roberta’s Eileen Daly, Necroville’s Billy Garberina and Colour From The Dark’s Eleanor James co-star; the music is by Marco Werba, who’s also scoring Dario Argento’s new Giallo. “There’s a lifetime’s worth of horror-film watching in Braincell,” Birrell tells us, and Zaso adds, “It’s a very savage...
