Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru
Actor Sidhant Gupta, who made a huge splash last year in the Prime Video series Jubilee, helmed by Vikramaditya Motwane, has got the meaty part of Jawaharlal Nehru here. For Gupta, who’s only thirty-five years old, it was a particularly challenging part as the show is set mostly during 1946–47, when Pandit Nehru is almost sixty. But given Gupta had already shown his skill as an actor, there was no reason...

There are many events in the history of India that are extremely important to every citizen, but in the history of modern day India, no event is greater than August 15, which we all proudly celebrate as our Independence Day, the day when India broke free of the chains of the British Raj.
August 15, marked a dramatic shift in the course of the entire world where India, which had been drained to the last drop, stripped of nearly all its wealth and historical and civilasational glory was born anew, at the stroke of midnight 77 years ago in 1947.
To celebrate India’s 77th Independence Day, here are some of the best movies that audiences can watch which celebrate the patriotic passion of the whole nation and dive into history of both pre-Independent and post-Independent India:

Arif Zakaria starrer 'Ahaan' has just dropped on Netflix. The film directed by Nikhil Pherwani narrates the story of a young man with Downs Syndrome, who develops a friendship with a neighbour suffering from obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Zakaria, who plays the role of the neighbour, says the story is both heartfelt and unique.
“I was blown away when Nikhil Pherwani narrated the story to me. In fact Abuli Mamaji, who plays the lead part of the person with Downs Syndrome, suffers from the same in real life too. So that’s totally real… The passion of the filmmaker was infectious. He had no money to shoot, which earlier I thought would be an impediment but he managed. The finished product has a nice feel to it, which money could’ve never brought to the film I feel. We all shot it for fun around Mumbai and that was it,...

strong>Ahaan
Starring Abuli Mamaji, Arif Zakaria, Niharika Singh, Plabita Borthakur
Written & Directed by Nikhil Pherwani
The best thing about this short, sweet, benign drama is its upbeat mood. Even when the situation gets sticky for Ahaan, played by a real-life Down Syndrome-d chap, he is forever walking on sunshine. The film follows suit. It is frothy and ebullient, unwilling to bring in the clouds even rain is forecast.
Ahaan opens with the protagonist looking down from his room at boys playing cricket. We know how this sequence would go. There is very maturely portrayed relationship between Ahaan and his constant companion Hari (Haresh Raut) who is more than the domestic help. Hari is the brother, the sounding board and the cheerleader Ahaan never had.
When Ahaan’s surly Ocd-stricken neighbour Ozzy’s wife leaves him, we know how it is going to go. If you crave for surprises in your cinematic experience,...

Avrodh: The Siege Within
Starring Amit Sadh, Neeraj Kabi, Vikram Gokhale, Darshan Kumar, Madhurima Tuli, Anant Mahadevan, Pavail Gulati, Mohit Chauhan, Arif Zakaria
Directed by Raj Acharya
Straightaway I must say Vikram Gokhale makes a much better Pm Modi than Viveik Oberoi. A veteran if ever there was one, Gokhale brings a certain gravitas to the wonderfully low-key character, a grace that goes beyond the well trimmed beard and the designer jackets.
Gokhale’s Pm Modi is in a deep turmoil. Should he or shouldn’t he strike back at Pakistan after the attack on the Uri camp base? The series, extending the national-security narrative that was so effectively projected in Aditya Dhar’s feature film Uri two years ago, puts a tight leash on the proceedings from the dastardly attack to the plotting planning and execution of counter-attack, better know as the surgical attack.
Though director Raj Acharya has 9 leisurely episodes at his disposal,...

"Is that young queen still refusing to submit to company rule?" Roadside Attractions has just unveiled an official Us trailer for an Indian historical action drama titled The Warrior Queen of Jhansi, also known as Swords and Sceptres: The Rani of Jhansi while in development. A tale of women's empowerment, The Warrior Queen of Jhansi tells the true story of Lakshmibai, the historic Queen of Jhansi who fiercely led her army against the British East India Company in the infamous mutiny of 1857. She is played by Devika Bhise in this film, and seems to be a bonafide warrior of both past & present. The full cast includes Jodhi May, Rupert Everett, Derek Jacobi, Nathaniel Parker, Ben Lamb, Omar Malik, R. Bhakti Klein, Arif Zakaria, and Yatin Karyekar. This looks especially cheesy, and if it weren't a true story, I'd say this is worth skipping. But it does look like an inspiring story.

Film: "Darr@The Mall"; Cast: Jimmy Shergill, Nushrat Bharucha,Arif Zakaria; Directed by Pawan Kripalani; Rating:***
It is easy to dismiss all films of the horror genre as surplus spook, more amusing and annoying than scary. Once in a while there comes a clutter-breaker among the harvest of scare fests that descend on us annually in batches of boo-startle.
"Darr@The Mall" is done with less stress on savagery than the genre favours. Though the head count does multiply alarmingly as the story progresses, we are pulled into the supernatural mayhem more by intelligent forces that grisly gimmicks. The characters.
It is easy to dismiss all films of the horror genre as surplus spook, more amusing and annoying than scary. Once in a while there comes a clutter-breaker among the harvest of scare fests that descend on us annually in batches of boo-startle.

Vikramaditya Motwane proved himself a proficient story-teller with his directorial debut Udaan that delved into parent-child relationship. With Lootera, he ventures into the trickier romantic genre. The problem with the latter bunch of films being that there is just about little that can be done with the narrative of a love story. While the core most often is the same, if not handheld with nifty treatment, there remains a strong sense of déjà-vu and nothing to distinguish it from the hordes of romantic dramas Bollywood is known to churn out every year. Does Lootera make itself an affair to remember under the expertise of Motwane? Read on.
Lootera is a period tale, one that unfolds around post-independence-1950s, a time of new laws, amendments leading to upheavals in the reign of Zamindari. A Bengal aristocracy Roy Chaudhary is a victim of this change. Enter Varun (Ranveer Singh) an archeologist who...

My Name is Khan
Raj and Rahul Malhotras are passé. What began with Kabir Khan in Chak De India has now concluded with the eponymous Rizvan Khan in My Name is Khan; Shahrukh Khan’s metamorphosis from an entertainer to an actor is now decisively complete. He’s delivered a performance that has depth and latitude, something his critics claimed he lacks.
On to the film, My Name is Khan is a perhaps a better film amongst many that have hit the screens lately. It’s certainly better than Fanaa, New York and Kurbaan – all very feeble and lifeless attempts to tell stories that unfold under the dark shadow of 9/11. In Kurbaan, Riyaz, the character played by Vivek Oberoi, doesn’t really think much before pulling the trigger on the restaurant attendant he’s been ordered to bump off. A seemingly rational and well integrated American, Riyaz goes ahead with...
