This article contains spoilers for Outer Range season 2.
Many shows in TV history have lived and died by their mysterious nature. Ongoing storylines in classics such as The X-Files, Lost, and Fringe had fans theorizing about main characters’ fates, the creative team’s intentions, or the deeper meaning of it all. Recently, shows such as From, Severance, and Yellowjackets have the same kind of devout following, and the same overarching enigmas that keep audiences coming back for answers.
When looking back at Outer Range’s first season, it’s easy to understand why the show was picked up for a second, and why the show had to come back – to unravel some of those riddles that season one left behind. While the sophomore season might have created more questions than answers, at least some of the puzzles have been solved. But don’t worry, if you’re still feeling out of the loop,...

ABC has opted not to renew for a second season The Company You Keep, its new drama series starring and executive produced by Milo Ventimiglia.
The Company You Keep, produced by Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television, did not perform as well as ABC’s two other midseason 2023 entries, fellow drama Will Trent, which has been renewed for a second season, and comedy Not Dead Yet, which is looking good for a renewal.
Still, Disney has longstanding relationship with Ventimiglia, who segued to The Company You Keep following his six-season starring turn on 20th Television’s hit NBC drama This Is Us. Based on that and the fact that The Company You Keep only premiered in midseason, there was talk that ABC may give the series a partial second season order to give it more time to find an audience.

As far as American cinema was concerned, the 1980s were a heavily bifurcated time. On the one hand, there were numerous films about the glory days, the music, and the nostalgia of the 1950s reflected in films like "Diner," "Stand By Me," or "The Big Chill." At the same time, many films just as aggressively satirized the rising tide of conservatism in the U.S., using punk and paranoia to undo the decade's tendency to look backward. Films like "Parents," "Christine," and "A Christmas Story" painted the 1950s as a darker time, and films about the modern yuppie milieu depicted the decade's callow rich as Earth's newest supervillains.
Oliver Stone's 1987 film "Wall Street" was the crown jewel of the anti-yuppie movie movement, depicting cutthroat stockbrokers as amoral jerks who would stab anyone in the back if it meant they could close a deal, manipulate stocks, and make a few more million dollars.

ABC said Monday that it has picked up The Company You Keep, starring and executive produced by This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia, to series. The drama, produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, was the last remaining “second cycle” pilot to learn its fate, but was a consistent frontrunner and a move to a series pickup always looked promising.
Like drama pilot Will Trent, which was picked up to series this month, The Company You Keep had started a writers room in anticipation of a series order. The project also had brought on seasoned writer-producer Phil Klemmer as co-showrunner. It will debut at midseason on ABC in 2023.

Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders season six episode five ‘The Road to Hell’
The Garrison Tavern really needs to vet its staff more closely. Back in season one, it hired a barmaid who turned out to be working undercover as a spy for Churchill and the Royal Irish Constabulary. Her name was Grace, and her threat was neutralised when she fell in love with the owner Tommy Shelby and became his wife.
The Garrison’s next spy wasn’t neutralised with a wedding, but with a gunshot to the head. That was barman Mickey Gibbs, executed by Tommy in the season five finale after Gibbs was discovered to have been taking bribes from enemies of the Peaky Blinders to inform on their plans. Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders season six episode four ‘Sapphire’.
“It’s a fascinating period in history that they’re moving into,” Sophie Rundle tells Den of Geek about Peaky Blinders season six. “Ada is astute enough and smart enough to see that it’s not a good thing, the world her kids are growing up in.” That’s putting it mildly. It’s a racist attack targeting Ada’s mixed heritage daughter Elizabeth, the child of Black British Intelligence Officer Colonel Ben Younger, who died in a car bomb attack last season. The brick-throwers hang a Swastika flag outside Ada’s house in an attempt to intimidate her. Ada may be a Thorne by marriage, but she’s a Shelby by nature, and as such, is not easily intimidated.

Sophie Rundle’s favourite line from any role in her career so far came in Peaky Blinders’ first season. Playing Ada, the younger sister of 1920s gangster-bookmakers Tommy, Arthur and John Shelby, she had a scene sitting in the Penny Crush cinema, watching a Rudolph Valentino film. Cillian Murphy as Tommy entered, cleared the place, and demanded to know the name of the man who’d made her pregnant. After he left, Ada sat alone in the theatre and yelled at the projectionist “Oy! I’m a Shelby too, you know. Put my fucking film back on!”
It’s Ada’s iconic line, says Rundle – outrageous and funny and the first in a series of excellent threats she issues in Peaky Blinders. Another comes in season four when she terrifies a pub landlord who initially mistakes her for just another unaccompanied woman, and who fails to provide ice for her whiskey.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
Meryl Streep as therapist with Uma Thurman as her client in Prime (2005)
#32 — Lisa Metzger, an Upper West Side therapist whose client begins dating her much younger son.
John: The most depressing thing about Prime is that director Ben Younger reportedly spent eight years writing it. Equally depressing is the sight of Meryl Streep, Actress of Her Generation, wasting her time on this insipid project, and the subsequent dearth of roles for actresses over fifty that her involvement signifies. Here’s a fun kernel for a comedy skit: a kooky, Upper West Side therapist learns that the 37-year-old woman she is treating has begun dating her 23-year-old son, ensuing comic hijinks, oversharing, and ethical quandaries between therapist, son, and client. Now, imagine that idea stretched out for nearly two hours, sans comedy or romance, and you’d have Prime,...

A month after MTV launched MTV Studios with an inaugural slate that includes Daria and Aeon Flux revivals, Pamela Post, Svp Original Programming & Head of West Coast for MTV, VH1 and Logo, has been elevated to Head of Scripted for the MTV, VH1, and Logo Group. In this expanded role, Post will oversee scripted programming for all three networks as well as for the newly launched MTV Studios.
The top scripted position in the group has been vacant since Maggie Malina stepped down as head of scripted for MTV and VH1 in February.
As part of a new Viacom mandate implemented in early 2017, both MTV and VH1 focused their programming efforts on unscripted programming. All of their existing scripted series were canceled with one exception, the upcoming rebooted third season of MTV’s Scream. But there have been a handful of scripted/animated projects going through the development pipeline over the past year,...

Sony Pictures has released the trailer for “Only the Brave,” the biographical drama starring Miles Teller and Josh Brolin based on the true story about firefighters and the historic wildfire that struck Yarnell, Arizona in June of 2013. Formerly known as “Granite Mountain Hotshots,” the name of the elite firefighting group that battled the deadly blaze, the film only took on its new title this week. GQ, which posted the trailer on Wednesday, published a magazine feature about the story entitled “No Exit” in 2013.

[Editor’s Note: This post is presented in partnership with Spectrum. Catch up on this year’s Awards Season contenders and the latest films On Demand. Today’s pick is “Bleed for This.”]
Miles Teller is proving to be an actor who specializes in roles that combine extreme effort and crippling excess. Aaron Eckhart, meanwhile, has become the kind of performer who can bring a well-worn specificity to grizzled supporting roles.
Combine those elements and you get “Bleed for This,” the latest film from Ben Younger (“Boiler Room”). Teller plays Vinny Pazienza, a boxer struggling to return to the ring after a debilitating neck injury. It’s a performance that showcases Teller’s physicality against the backdrop of a true-life story. As Pazienza’s coach, Kevin Rooney, Eckhart brings his ferocity to a role that requires a less obvious show of continual force.
Younger has said that “Bleed for This” is far from a movie solely for boxing purists; he also wanted to rope in audiences who don’t care about sports at all. It’s an admirable goal, but one that doesn...

But Marvel TV has its fair share of magic as well, and it’s all on display this week as half the team is lost in a very dark magical dimension thanks to the machinations of Eli Morrow.

★★★☆☆ How many times has the line "Give me another shot" been uttered in a boxing movie? What is it about these fiercely stubborn, bloodied and bruised fighters that means they just don't know when to throw in the towel? Of all the human punching bags witnessed on film over the years, and of the many, many stories of triumph inside the ring in the battered face of adversity outside it, perhaps none are as deserving of cinematic treatment as Vinny Pazienza. With his first film since 2005 Meryl Streep-led rom-com Prime, Brooklyn director Ben Younger makes a complete change of direction, telling a remarkable life story with Bleed For This.

After a decade away from the camera, Boiler Room director Ben Younger's back with Bleed For This. Ryan charts his extraordinary return...
Ask director Ben Younger about his new film, Bleed For This, and he glows with enthusiasm: eyes flashing behind his large glasses, he'll talk eagerly about the energy among the cast and the stress of shooting a period boxing drama on such a tight budget. Ask him about his first movie, the 2000 crime drama Boiler Room, and the words flow less easily. There's a hint of regret in his voice, a pause or two as he thinks about exactly the right response: not because the movie wasn't any good - far from it, in fact - but because, he suggests, its success came a little too early and easily.

One trend in the Oscar race this year seems to be films that are about recent events. For Martin Scorsese, “Silence” is not just another movie. The film based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel of the same name has been a passion project for the filmmaker and high on his list of priorities ever since he first read the book. The story follows two 17th century Jesuit priests (played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield) who face violence and persecution as they travel through Japan to spread Christianity and locate their mentor (Liam Neeson).

The 2016 box office continues unpredictable.
“Doctor Strange” lead the recent but short-lived box office revival, along with some hits that surpassed expectations (“Boo! A Madea Halloween” and “Trolls”). But the pre-Thanksgiving weekend came in below predicted numbers. After several years with strong franchise entries opening to over $100 million, the costly J.K. Rowling Harry Potter prequel “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (Warner Bros.), a potential major blockbuster, ended up with an acceptable but unexceptional $75 million total. The well-reviewed VFX extravaganza could build word of mouth as it goes along.

In Bleed for This, Miles Teller plays real-life Rhode Island boxer Vinny Pazienza, who after breaking his neck in a car accident, begins a long recuperation that includes wearing a "halo" metal brace around his head and ultimately fights to return to the ring.
The film, written and directed by Boiler Room's Ben Younger, has received a number of rave reviews, including from The Hollywood Reporter's chief film critic Todd McCarthy, who called it "a gritty, pungently Rhode Island working class-set boxing drama that connects with most of its punches."

Let’s return to the ring once more for another true life tale of triumph and tragedy all set in the world of the “sweet science”. Almost a year ago movie audiences were cheering on a re-invention of the fiction franchise began by Rocky with the spin-off Creed. And just a few months ago we watched the rags to riches to rags true tale of Roberto Duran in Hands Of Stone. Now, or should I say, “…and in this corner”, is the saga of Vinnie Pazienza, a scrappy young fighter from a working class East Coast neighborhood. Ah, but he’s not just fighting other contenders. No, his story mixes the standard sports flick with the “struggling against a devastating medical crisis” drama. It’s a story so incredible that it has to be true (who could make it up?), as Vinnie shows the world that to defy the odds...

Miles Teller proves himself a champ by going all 12 rounds as Vinny "The Pazmanian Devil" Pazienza, the Rhode Island boxer who competed in three different weight classes – only to face the fight of his life after breaking his neck in a car accident and being told to hang up the gloves. That hyperbolic plot summary suggests a minefield of Hollywood clichés, and to be sure, Bleed for This sometimes bleeds right into them. But writer-director Ben Younger (Boiler Room, Prime) has a way of punching his way out of tight corners.

The boxing drama “Bleed for This” has a powerful story and a strong lead performance in its corner, but falls short of knockout status. Hampered by clichéd writing and stereotypical portrayals, this extraordinary true-life account feels run-of-the-mill. As written and directed by Ben Younger (“Boiler Room”) it’s not a bad movie; it’s just too familiar and conventional. No doubt the comeback of Vinny Pazienza (a.k.a. “the Pazmanian Devil”) after a near-fatal car crash, a broken neck and paralysis must have felt like a cinematic win from the moment it was pitched. The tale’s powerful dramatic arc is undeniable.

Miles Teller portrays boxer Vinny Pazienza in an unbelievable comeback story that was too outrageous even for the big screen. Pazienza returned to the ring 13 months after breaking his neck in a head on car collision. He was so determined to enter the ring once again, he started working out five days after the accident. Teller, Aaron Eckhart who portrays his trainer Kevin Rooney, Katey Sagal as Vinny's mom and director Ben Younger chime in on whether Vinny Pazienza is truly a maniac.

Miles Teller isn’t the only actor who could have played Vinny Paz, the real-life boxing champion of Ben Younger’s shamelessly rousing sports drama Bleed For This. You can tell from the obligatory end-credits appearance by the actual Pazienza that Teller’s frame isn’t nearly stocky enough, even after bulking up significantly for the assignment. And the star’s Italian stallion routine, with his blue-collar Rhode Island braggadocio, is a little labored. There is, however, a reason, beyond vague facial resemblance, that Teller nabbed this role, and it becomes abundantly clear around the time that Vinny Paz refuses a sedative from the doctor who’s about to remove the metal screws from his skull. This lightly fictionalized version of the boxer is as stubborn, driven, and masochistic as the entirely fictional drummer Teller memorably portrayed in Whiplash. And even that guy didn’t risk a severed spinal chord...

Ben Younger may only have two feature films to his name (Boiler Room and Prime), but he’s looking to change that this weekend with the release of Tiff favorite Bleed for This, a boxing drama that has been receiving strong reviews and has put the director on the map again. So much so, in fact, that he’s already lined up his next project, and it’ll take the form of a motorcycle racing movie titled Isle of Man.
Set to chronicle “the titular dangerous event that takes place on the island of the same name in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland,” the film has just landed its two lead stars ahead of a production start next summer.
