The appeal of bad movies has always been a little hard to explain, but it could probably best be compared to the innate hilarity of something like America’s Funniest Home Videos (basically now transformed into Youtube, freeing us from the groove-killing of the hosts). No matter how high our brain function as homo sapiens ever gets, we will always be reduced to our most primal, adolescent form at the sight of some one falling off a ladder, being hit in the face by a baseball bat, or getting attacked by a dog (preferably if the person is dignified or has no idea that it’s coming); similarly, it’s hilarious to see a director or writer completely humiliated upon the release of a truly awful film, as they have failed on a scale that is far larger and more expensive as well as more personal. Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.

Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.

Next year October needs to begin in August.
