He was shot with three .22-caliber bullets, one in the left shoulder and two in the back of the head while being mugged in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco. He was shot even though he had already turned over his wallet to the muggers and had been lying face down on the sidewalk. He died about 10 hours later at San Francisco General Hospital. Two men responsible Tremayne Collier and Daniel "Milo" Mooring, were convicted of murder during the commission of a robbery and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2004. Two other men Willie Kennedy and Santese Edwards pleaded guilty to theft-related charges as part of a plea bargain. The pair, which were waiting in a getaway car during the robbery, testified against Collier and Mooring.
