Wilker loved and understood a lot about cinema. He was often invited by television to comment about cinema festivals.

He was often cast in soap operas on Brazilian television.

Has been in more than forty films since 1965. The most famous are Xica da Silva (1976), Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos (1976), Bye Bye Brasil (1979), O Homem da Capa Preta (1985) and Guerra de Canudos (1997).

Wilker was the father of three daughters: Mariana (a psychologist) with actress Renée de Vielmond, Isabel Wilker (a model) with actress Mônica Torres and Madá with Claudia Montenegro.

Won Award Contigo! for best actor for his role in the soap "Senhora do Destino" (2005).

José is one of the founders of the theater group called Grupo Chegança.

He studied Sociology in Rio de Janeiro.
