- Loudon Snowden Wainwright III was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to Martha Taylor, a yoga teacher, and Loudon Wainwright II, longtime editor of Life Magazine. LWIII eschewed magazines in favor of folk music, which he began playing professionally in the '60s. Part of the "New Bob Dylan" scene in the late '60s, early '70s (and subject of a humorous ode to Dylan on the singer's 50th birthday). Son Rufus Wainwright wrote a song about an argument he once had with his father; it was entitled "Dinner At Eight".

Songs included "North Korea Blues (Oh, Tokyo)", featured prominently throughout the episode "Rainbow Bridge". In 2004, he played one of the Cocoanut Grove singers (lead singer in tune "Happy Feet") in the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Aviator (2004), which also starred M*A*S*H (1972) alum Alan Alda.
