John Connor….Bruce Wayne…..Every film lover worth his or her own salt is aware of the iconic characters which have made Christian Bale a household celebrity name, but what about the other past roles that have gotten him to where he is today? According to IMDb, Bale has appeared in roughly 45 roles (including a few television stints) since 1987′s powerful Empire Of The Sun, in which he filled the shoes of the unrecognizably young, Jamie Graham. With Bale once again splashing across the headlines – most recently regarding his visits to the Aurora hospitals housing victims of the recent Colorado theater shootings, this writer has decided that it’s the perfect time to present five of Bale’s best, more obscure and under-appreciated films, all presented in ascending chronological order:

During the many, many years that a Sin City sequel has been in development, one of the biggest question marks has been whether Mickey Rourke would return to play Marv in the prequel/sequel/interquel. Now it seems that he's willing to don the necessary prosthetics once more, as he's in talks for the role in A Dame To Kill For. And he's also in negotiations for Albert Hughes' Motor City to boot.To take the latter first, the film is set to star Gerard Butler (replacing the briefly-cast Jake Gyllenhaal) as an ex-Army Ranger named John Miller who is betrayed and sent to prison by a man who then also steals his girlfriend (insult to injury, that). We're not sure yet what role Rourke would be playing - surely he wouldn't steal Butler's girl! - but hopefully all will become clear as and when he signs up.As...

Zhang Yimou's film about the brutal Japanese invasion of Nanjing looks and tastes like Hollywood hokum, but it is heartfelt and watchable and stars a forthright, emotional Christian Bale
Chinese director Zhang Yimou has given us a movie set during the brutal Japanese invasion of Nanjing in 1937. It's a Sino-American co-production and the resulting film looks and tastes like Hollywood-style hokum, although it is heartfelt and watchable. Christian Bale plays John Miller, a boozy and cynical westerner who takes refuge in a convent housing a gaggle of terrified schoolgirls and a bevy of prostitutes. He dresses in priest's robes for a drunken joke, but then finds redemption in actually protecting the women disguised. Bale is forthright and emotional in the role, and with a hint of boyish vulnerability, even reminds us of his 13-year-old self in Spielberg's Empire of the Sun.

Yimou Zhang‘s The Flowers of War is currently the most expensive Chinese film ever made, starring Christian Bale and gathering numerous awards nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination in 2011. You’d think all of this praise and attention would mean that movie is at the very least a dramatic war film with a gripping story and intense performances, right?
The Flowers of War is dramatic and does contain one notable performance, but aside from that performance and some expertly shot battle sequences, it’s merely just another lengthy Chinese war epic that could use a trimming in the editing room and a little more flavor in the casting department.
It’s 1937 in Nanking and a westerner by the name of John Miller (Christian Bale) is on his way to a church for a brief work, before leaving the war-filled country. He arrives at the church and finds no work...

The Flowers Of War is China's most expensive film yet and it's one of the first major Chinese films to prominently feature an American Hollywood star as its main character. In 1937, Nanjing, the capital of the Jiangsu province in China stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. As the invading Japanese Imperial Army overruns China’s capital city, desperate civilians seek refuge behind the nominally protective walls of a western cathedral. China, 2011
A select few of China’s most revered filmmakers have, at given moments in their careers, chosen to make headway in the English-language cinema landscape, their sights aimed more specifically at the United States and Hollywood. John Woo’s stint was less than memorable, with Face/Off being his most successful attempt (and few would argue that it is any better than what he made in Hong Kong either before or after his American career). Wong Kar Wai, after making a name for himself with nearly 20 years of great films, headed West as well to make My Blueberry Nights with mixed results to say the least. Zhang Yimou, known mostly for his wuxia-style epics Hero and House of Flying Daggers, does not go to quite the same lengths, preferring to keep his latest film set in China,...

Finally! It took a ski-stealing kid to raise the bar for films selected to be in competition. Ursula Meier’s L’enfant D’en Haut (Sister) tells an intriguing story with well-composed twists, starring brilliant actors Kacey Mottet Klein and Léa Seydoux (who really gets to show how talented she is) as Simon and Louise. When asked about the whereabouts of his parents, he explains how they died in a car accident and that he now lives with his sister. Simon and Louise’s relationship constantly shifts between battle and tenderness. Meier captures her story full of contradictions and struggle with a narrative and visual ease going into great depth. Zhang Yimou's war epic heralds new co-operation, but at times the stylistic gap between east and west is just too deep
Heralded as a new dawn in China-Hollywood co-operation, this ambitious war film from Zhang Yimou is an attempt to turn the revolting aftermath of the 1937 Japanese assault on Nanjing into a globally friendly, putatively inspiring epic that also aims to underscore the Us and China's geopolitical mutual respect.
Zhang has imported Christian Bale to play the lead, as an American mortician called John Miller who turns up in Nanjing as Japanese soldiers consolidate their grip on the hapless city, then the capital of Chiang Kai-shek's Chinese republic. He's there to look after the body of a dead priest, but the morally shaky Miller quickly finds himself in the priest's place – drinking his wine, wearing his clothes, and having to protect a gaggle of convent schoolgirls after marauding Japanese soldiers attempt a mass rape.

While hordes of fan boys and girls eagerly await Christian Bale's return to summer blockbusters with The Dark Knight Rises, the daring actor, who made Batman a gravel-voiced brooder, painted an entirely different portrait of heroism in Zhang Yimou's awe-inspiring war drama The Flowers of War. Here Bale plays John Miller, a self-centered American who, in search of easy money, but finds himself in the midst of the infamous Nanking Massacre, where Japanese troops invaded, slaughtered, and raped countless Chinese civilians. Repulsed by the cruelty and inhumanity he witnesses, Miller is spurred to become the self-appointed protector of a cluster of young girls who've made the local church their sanctuary. Along the way, he also falls for one of the gorgeous courtesans who have claimed the church's basement as their hiding place. Their unlikely romance urges both to heights of bravery neither had ever thought possible. In this clip...

The Flowers of War
Directed by: Yimou Zhang
Cast: Christian Bale, Tony Dagwei
Running Time: 2 hrs 25 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 20, 2012
Plot: An American mortician (Bale) staying in China in 1937 pretends to be a priest in order to help orphans, who are holed up at a church, escape tumultuous Nanking.
Who’S It For?: Fans of Bale will find this to be another compelling performance from the now-Oscar winner. As far as war movies go, this is the type that wears its bleeding heart on its sleeve, and then dabs with a tearful tissue. If you’re looking for a less somber depiction of war, stick with Spielberg’s War Horse instead.
Expectations: Making a Chinese movie after winning an Oscar doesn’t seem like the usual victory lap, so as an admirer of Bale’s, I was quite curious. What kind of character would he play in...

Arguably the most eagerly-anticipated Chinese movie of the year, Zhang Yimou's epic retelling of the 1937 Nanking Massacre is not only the country's most expensive movie ever, but boasts Academy Award winner Christian Bale in the lead role. Bale plays John Miller, an American mortician who is summoned to a Cathedral in Nanking to help bury the deceased priest, only to take his place and help defend the young female students, as well as a troupe of prostitutes, from the invading Japanese forces. The Flowers Of War is a big movie in every sense of the word, from its kinetic battle scenes to the beautiful photography and impressive performances from a mostly young and inexperienced cast. Director Zhang Yimou is no stranger to epic period films that meld action with artistry to often stunningly beautiful effect, but films like Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower exist far from the real world. They feature their fair share of drama and loss, but wuxia films as a genre also include physical and acrobatic exaggerations that firmly remove it from the realm of reality. The director’s latest film, The Flowers of War, does not allow itself that luxury. It’s 1937, and the Chinese city of Nanjing has fallen to the invading Japanese army. Amid the citizens rushing to escape what will soon become a concrete prison are a group of Catholic schoolgirls who literally missed the boat and are now trying to make it back to their convent. The majority of them survive the run through the city, and they’re soon joined by an American named John Miller (Christian Bale...

The latest feature from internationally heralded Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, The Flowers of War, is not a tale of soldiers and strategies, but rather of the women and children caught in the crossfire of war. Based on Geling Yan’s novel The Thirteen Flowers of War, this sweeping historical drama is set amidst the horrific backdrop of the Rape of Nanjing, the six-week period in which the Japanese invaded Nanjing, China, and killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians, then–as the weeks drew on–raped the survivors. Yimou, who has created such visually stunning features as House of Flying Daggers and Ju Dou, does not shy away from the brutal realities of this heinous moment in history. The film’s violence is unrelenting and yet beautiful, punctuated with the bold colors for which Yimou is known. For example, when a war-torn building is blown sky high, amid the gore and dust,...

Not too long ago the small outfit Wreckin Hill Entertainment picked up Us rights [1] to Zhang Yimou's new film The Flowers of War. That's the film in which Christian Bale plays a roguish American who ends up taking responsibility for a group of girls and women who take refuge in a church during Japan's siege of Nanking during World War II. The film is China's entry for this year's Best Foreign Language film (it is also the most expensive film produced in China) and has an Oscar-qualifying run set to begin December 21 in New York, with openings on Dec 23 in La and San Francisco. To promote that Oscar run there is now a Us trailer for the film, and it is far more coherent and story-oriented than the sales trailer [2] we saw some time ago. Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale, was going to be released in China long before it would hit state side, that was a given. The film is scheduled for a December 16th release. But there was no American distributor willing to pick it up.
But Wrekin Hill Entertainment in conjuction with Row 1 Productions have stepped up to the plate and will give The Flowers of War a limited release late December just in time for a Academy qualifying run. Eventually The Flowers of War will get an extended release in January.
In The Flowers of War, Christian Bale plays a priest in Nanking who must defend his church and it’s students from the Japanese forces who threaten them. You can check out the trailer here.

The Chinese release of Zhang Yimou's WWII film The Flowers of War is imminent in China, where the film will open on December 16. But its fate has been undecided in the States. Now Wrekin Hill Entertainment, in association with Row 1 Productions, will release the movie in a limited late December Academy qualifying run, and give the movie a wider release in early 2012. In The Flowers of War, which is set in 1937, Christian Bale plays "a salty mortician who apparently has come to town to bury the priest of a cathedral in Nanking," and ends up taking over for the priest when invading Japanese forces threaten the students of a girls' school that is also housed in the cathedral. We saw a Chinese sales trailer [1] not long ago, but with distribution set for the movie we can probably expect a trailer for Us audiences in short order. The press release is below.

After months of speculation that went hand-in-hand with talk of Oscars, the U.S. distribution contest for Zhang Yimou‘s The Flowers of War has ended a tad anticlimacticly. A press release announces that Wrekin Hill — the company recently behind Hesher, The People vs. George Lucas, and The Way Back — have picked up the Christian Bale starrer for an opening later this year. With Row 1, they’ll release it in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco “in late December 2011,” rolling it out to other markets at the start of next year.
Awards hope isn’t completely dissipated by this news — but it could very well be hurt. Wrekin Hill is a very small distributor who couldn’t find the proper method to support Peter Weir‘s The Way Back, a film that could have easily earned a nomination for something more technical — cinematography, perhaps — so long as it had the proper backing.

Were you aware that Judi Dench is awesome? You probably were, but if you'd like to know a little bit more about her awesomeness, you should read this biography. It's pretty interesting, but it does come with some caveats.
1. If you ever entertained any notions of a career in theater but went on to do something practical, like be a librarian, this book will make you regret this choice.
2. You will be forever regretful of all the amazing theatrical performances you had no opportunity of seeing. I'm not just talking about Dame Judi's (although, my god); she talks about seeing other performances as well. For instance: Did you know that Ciaran Hinds originated the role of Larry in Closer on the stage? Gah.
3. You will be sorely tempted to quit your job and spend the next six months reading all the plays that get talked about. You're still not all...
