Exclusive: Georgian Anti-Putin drama The Antique, which had its world premiere at Venice’s Giornate degli Autori temporarily suspended after Russian and Croatian producers issued an injunction claiming copyright issues, is back in the courts again.
The film’s Georgian producer Zurab Magalashvili at Tbilisi-based Cinetech Film Production and director Rusudan Glurjidze have revealed that the production has been hit by a fresh lawsuit, in what they call “an increasingly aggressive attempt to undermine this Anti-Putin film”.
The drama, which is Georgia’s Oscar entry this year, takes inspiration from the real-life illegal expulsion of thousands of Georgian nationals from Russia in 2006.
The deportations were part of the so-called 2006 Georgian–Russian espionage controversy, sparked by Georgia’s arrest of a number of Russian military officers on charges of espionage and terrorism, when Vladimir Putin was in his first term as Russian president.

First Weekend Of November Belongs To Sony With ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ & ‘Here’ – Box Office Preview
Sony will own the first weekend of November at the box office, with the second frame of the Culver City lot’s Venom: The Last Dance down around 60%, or $20 million, for No. 1, followed by the studio’s release of Miramax’s adult drama Here.
Here, which reps the Forrest Gump reteam of filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, scribe Eric Roth and stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, is expected to do around $7M with an eye on hopefully pulling older adults out again this weekend after they made a date for Focus Features’ Conclave last weekend ($6.6M opening).
It remains to be seen whether Here slots in second place, giving Sony the frame’s 1-2 punch.
The question is whether audiences will go along with watching a generations drama story about various families on the same property/house at a skewed-degree angle. Hanks and Wright are technologically de-aged to their former 1980s/1990s selves,...

Paul Morrissey, a fixture of New York’s cinema scene whose collaborations with Andy Warhol in the ’60s and ’70s reinvented the American underground and made local legends of amateur actors and transgender performers, died Monday at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 86.
Morrissey’s death was confirmed by archivist Michael Chaiken to the New York Times, which reported that the cause was pneumonia.
Warhol and Morrissey were first introduced in 1965, when the former had begun to tinker with experimental films in his infamous loft hub, dubbed The Factory. Working on budgets of under $10,000, the pair completed a series of features, reaching the most commercial success with a trilogy starring Warhol fixture and gay sex symbol Joe Dallesandro that consisted of “Flesh,” “Trash” and “Heat.” Warhol served as producer, while Morrissey’s cinéma vérité direction and largely ad-libbed scripts provided his leads, such as Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn and Viva,...

The Spanish guitar goddesses in Hinds have been through it lately, and they bet that you have, too. They begin their fabulously resilient Viva Hinds with “Hi, How Are You,” a garage-rock strut with some call-and-response about shaking off some bad luck. Ana Perrotte sings, “Hey, you okay?” Carlotta Cosials replies, “I’ve been better tbh.” Viva Hinds is their fourth and finest album, a joyful, brash half-hour of swaggering tunes about facing up to heartache by turning it into a sarcastic joke, with guitars cranked up all the way.

Fernando Arrabal’s Viva la Muerte is a mostly autobiographical account of the filmmaker’s youth during the Spanish Civil War that intermingles with disturbingly surreal dreams and fantasies. This alienation effect is rendered all the more unsettling since Arrabal opts to shoot the imaginal sequences on heavily color-filtered video, aligning them with Nam June Paik’s avant-garde video art. Another sort of alienation may stem from some unsimulated violence against animals, in particular a jaw-dropping scene in a slaughterhouse that combines the in-your-face verité of Georges Franju’s Blood of the Beasts with the dynamic writhing of Isadora Duncan.
Viva la Muerte opens at the end of the war, with a jeep full of fascist soldiers declaring the titular phrase and vowing to kill half of Spain’s population if that’s what it takes to cleanse the nation from the pernicious influence of atheism and communism. Young Fando (Mahdi Chaouch) looks on,...

Though the end of the year is mainly the mainstay of serious and somber award-seeking films, there’s almost always room for family-friendly flicks. After all, there has to be a break from all the hectic holiday preparations, and what better way to relax than getting off your feet in one of those swell reclining plush multiplex chairs? So, the “mouse house” will arrive shortly with a slick fantasy fable, but how about their “major ‘toon rival”? Well, the fine folks at Dreamworks are completing a trilogy begun seven years ago when they put a new spin on a beloved baby boomer toy. Much of that spin involves music, as the lil’ critters interpreted classic (and some brand new) pop tunes. This makes their third outing feel a bit foreshadowed as those Trolls Band Together.
This new outing begins with a flashback to the final performance of the huge Troll boy band BroZone.

Stop me before I pun again.
It’s a mantra that I dearly wish the creators of the third installment in the hugely successful animated Trolls series had taken to heart. Capitalizing on the fact that one of the film’s main voice stars, Justin Timberlake, was formerly a member of one of the biggest boy bands in pop history, Trolls Band Together is stuffed with so many groan-worthy punning jokes and one-liners referencing such bands from the ‘90s and other eras that you wonder whether the film was made for its target tyke audience or their parents. Many of the latter will at least enjoy the pop culture nostalgia while enduring the perfunctory storyline.
You have to admire Timberlake for being willing to make fun of his showbiz past. The plot involves the revelation that his character, Branch, was once the baby (literally) member of BroZone, a mega-successful boy band featuring his four brothers,...

It’s the school holidays, a time when parents across the UK prepare to pay over a healthy chunk of their salary to their local cinema’s snack counter, switch off their brains and sit in the dark while the latest family feature washes over them and their offspring. Occasionally, very occasionally, a worthy film rises above the flotsam to capture the imagination of every generation and bond them all in the warming glow of genuine enjoyment.
Trolls Band Together is not that film.
Poppy (Anna Kendrick) has never been happier. She’s attending the wedding of her best friend in the world, the Trolls and the Bergens are united and living in peace and she and Branch (Justin Timberlake) are officially a couple. Yay! But, despite their new closeness, Branch is holding back his true origin story; the mild-mannered Pop Troll used to be a legit pop star, a member of boyband BroZone!

In “Alma Viva,” Portugal’s Oscar entry which is currently screening in main competition at the Marrakech Film Festival, it’s Summer, time for Salomé to visit her beloved grandma Avo in North East Portugal.
Ever since they moved to France with her mom, she comes back every year. Avo is revered in the village, but also feared. Some consider her a witch. Grandma’s connection with spirits and the dead fascinates Salomé. But the summer idyll is over when Avo, a diabetic who for years self-medicated with herbs and spells, suddenly dies.
While raging fires enclose the area, the family and neighbors struggle to find unity in mourning.
Sold by Kinology Films, “Alma Viva” marks the feature debut of experienced documentarian Cristèle Alves Meira, shot in the village of her mother and maternal grandmother.
“It is a region [left] deserted by the massive exodus of its population abroad or to cities.

Shot one week at a time over the course of a decade or so, Linklater explores the formative years of a young man named Mason, played by Ellar Coltrane. In the wake of the wild success of Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the idiosyncratic French filmmaker was lured by Hollywood move to southern California to produce what would become Model Shop. With his wife and fellow cinematic genius Agnès Varda in tow, they moved to Los Angeles in 1967 where Varda would dive headlong into a series of expressively free form personal projects that would be begin with an adventure North to Sausalito where she would meet a distant relative and the subject of her first film included in Criterion’s wonderful new Agnès Varda in California Eclipse set, Uncle Yanco.

Many of those disappeared quickly, and this weekend could be similar as companies usher in about a dozen limited-release theatrical newcomers. Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything, however, has amassed a good amount of attention. Directed by Oscar winner James Marsh (Man On Wire), the Stephen Hawking biopic is opening two months after its Toronto debut. Two notable nonfiction titles also join the fray this weekend: Cinema Guild’s Actress, from director Robert Greene, and Zipporah Films’ National Gallery by nonfiction maverick Frederick Wiseman. Both deserve attention as the awards-race heats up. Two years after the theatrical bow of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, the 16th U.S. President is the focus of Amplify’s The Better Angels — though it focuses a very different phase of his life. Distrib Films is opening Italian political...
