Wes Bentley (American Beauty) and Dougray Scott (The Diplomat) star in the 2011 film There Be Dragons, which is based on the true story about the lift of saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of controversial Catholic institution Opus Dei.

Written and directed by Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields), the biography movie follows investigative journalist Robert Torres (Scott), who’s researching a book about Escrivá (Charlie Cox, Moby Dick). His work gets derailed when his father Manolo (Bentley), his most promising source, turns uncooperative.

Robert discovers that Manolo was a childhood friend with Escrivá, and they attended the same seminary. However, the two men took different paths in life, with Escrivá dedicating his life to his faith and Manolo getting involved in the brutal Spanish Civil War. The more Robert investigates, the more he finds out the lives of the two men overlapped.

As London-based investigative journalist Robert Torres (Dougray Scott) is researching a book about canonized priest Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer (Charlie Cox), the controversial founder of Opus Dei, he discovers that his primary source regarding the saint's past is his estranged and now regretful father, Manolo Torres (Wes Bentley). Manolo was not only born in the same Spanish town as Josemaria, but they were childhood chums and attended the same seminary. However, as adults, their lives went in different directions. While spiritual Josemaria preached the gospel, Manolo became embroiled in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), falling in love with a fellow revolutionary, Ildiko (Olga Kurylenko), who - in turn - adores their daring leader, Oriol (Rodrigo Santoro).

Last Friday in Spain we saw the opening weekend release for “There Be Dragons”, the new film from acclaimed and twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “The Mission” and “The Killing Fields”. Budgeted at $35 million, the co-production between Spain, U.S and Argentina the film proved to be a moderate success already before its release as it grossed an impressive 300 000 Euros in pre-sold tickets, although we have to take in consideration big part of these tickets were part of a charity campaign for Doctors Without Borders as well as other non benefit organizations, a clever marketing campaign no doubt benefited the film's tally. On May 6th, there's a very interesting film coming your way. There Be Dragons is a sweeping, historic epic, and it looks to have everything going right, including Roland Joffé as writer and director. The story looks wonderful and complex. It may just be some brilliant abilities behind putting together a trailer, but this one shot instantly to the top of my must-see list.
