If you're a fan of the long-running series "How I Met Your Mother," you know that pop star Britney Spears memorably pops up in the third season of the beloved CBS sitcom ... so how did that happen, and how did Spears' guest role basically save the show?
During a Reddit Ama (ask me anything) in 2013, Carter Bays, who created "How I Met Your Mother" alongside Craig Thomas, was asked if any of the show's guest stars had ever specifically asked to join the series. Apparently, Spears did just that. "We got a call a few weeks after the writers' strike [in 2007] ended saying that Britney Spears wanted to be on our show," Bays responded. "And she specifically wanted to be in the episode 'Ten Sessions,' which sent a chill down our spines, because that's the one where we meet Stella [Zinman, a love interest for Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby]."

The four male leads on "The Big Bang Theory" — Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper, Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter, Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz, and Kunal Nayyar as Raj Koothrappali — feel so synonymous with their roles on Chuck Lorre's sitcom that it's hard to imagine transplanting them onto any of the show's other competitors. As it turns out, though, Parsons very nearly played a very different TV character: specifically, Barney Stinson, the role ultimately portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris on "How I Met Your Mother" (which also aired on CBS).
In 2015, Parsons told daytime talk show host Kelly Ripa and her co-host at the time, Michael Strahan, that he read for Barney and found the character sort of baffling (via Yahoo!). "It was one of the stranger experiences of my life," Parsons recalled. "Because you know how it is to audition for things. They come out with character breakdowns and stuff,...

Barney Stinson, the lovable, suit-wearing, womanizing bro from How I Met Your Mother, has left an indelible mark on pop culture. His witty dialogue, clever antics, and suave personality made him a fan favorite, even years after the show’s conclusion.
However, few fans know that the character narrowly escaped a fate worse than death – becoming a one-dimensional joke, reliant on catchphrases and gimmicks. Matthew Perry also publicly expressed his disdain for his Friends catchphrase, even begging the show’s producers to remove it.
The catchphrase conundrum: How Himym avoided a common TV trap
Neil Patrick Harris‘s portrayal of Barney Stinson was ‘legend-wait for it-dary’ on How I Met Your Mother. Fans often remember the character by his popular catchphrase, but most don’t know the origin behind it.

Alyson Hannigan starred in How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons and is ready for a new spinoff.
In a new interview, the American Pie alum revealed she had an idea for a reboot that would focus on Jason Segel’s character, Marshall Eriksen.
“It’s like, ‘No, no, no, no kids. That’s not how it happened,'” Hannigan told People. “And then it starts out with, ‘We were a lot older, first of all …’ and then we can just do the show again.”
Hannigan played Lily Aldrin, the character who eventually marries Segel’s Marshall. The CBS sitcom, which premiered in 2005, followed Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as he tells his kids the story of how he met their mother. Bob Saget narrated the series throughout its run as older Ted.

New Girl is definitely one of the most heartwarmingly funny series about friends and love created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The Fox comedy series follows the chirpy and naive Jessica as she moves into a loft with 3 guys who are equally as quirky and weird. New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Damon Wayans Jr., Nasim Pedrad, and Megan Fox. New Girl lasted for seven seasons ending its run in 2018, so if you loved the unending optimism, quirky personalities, and a group of young friends trying to find their way here are some similar shows you should check out next.

The world let out a collective groan of disappointment when Ted Mosby showed up at Cobie Smulders’ Robin’s apartment in the finale of How I Met Your Mother. While the entire show led up to Ted finding the titular mother, the series finale did away with the mother quickly before making him return to Robin.
The makers also disappointed fans by chronicling Barney and Robin’s wedding for the entire ninth season before revealing in the final episode that they did not work out. However, Smulders reportedly had another pitch during the wedding sequence, which probably would have ended their marriage sooner.

How I Met Your Mother has been a long fan-favorite when it comes to sitcoms, and one of the greatest reasons why it was so enjoyable was none other than Neil Patrick Harris’s Barney Stinson. A literal beloved character, he just couldn’t deliver his lines without adding some unique, extraordinary touch to it with his notable – “Wait for it” – catchphrase.

However, while this very trait sets him apart from all the other characters in the world of sitcoms, the show’s creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, originally had no intentions of giving him this trait. If anything, they desperately wished to avoid adding this annoying feature to Stinson until one joke changed their minds and transformed the character into one of the most iconic ones of all time.

When How I Met Your Mother debuted in 2005, it became popular right away. Under the direction of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the show featured Josh Radnor’s character Ted Mosby as he narrated his children the story of how he met their mother, captivating viewers with its unique narrative technique. In addition to Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris’s portrayal of the well-known womanizer Barney Stinson gave the show the necessary comic edge.

How I Met Your Mother wrapped its run a decade ago, but its humor remains as crisp and timeless as one of Barney’s Italian suits. As the show returns to Netflix, we have a Slapsgiving gift for you: We caught up with executive producer and co-creator Craig Thomas to revisit his favorite episodes; reflect on the moments that best represent the sitcom; and update us on the Paul Shaffer–obsessed pride of Vancouver, Robin Sparkles.
What episode (aside from the pilot!) should viewers start with?
Ooh, fun thought exercise! Ok, if somebody were going to start How I Met Your Mother with an episode besides the pilot, another later Season 1 episode, “The Pineapple Incident,” is a solid entry point. It’s a fun mystery episode where the whole gang tries to figure out, piece by piece, in flashbacks, what the hell a very drunk Ted (Josh Radnor) got himself...

For nine seasons and 208 episodes (all of which are now streaming on Netflix), How I Met Your Mother left us wondering one thing: How in the world did hopeless romantic Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) meet the mother of his children? If you put the premise of your show right there in the title, there better be a big payoff at some point. When How I Met Your Mother wrapped up its tale of love, friendship, and legen — wait for it — dary long-running jokes in New York City, series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas left very few questions unanswered (including that one about the titular mother).
While that mystery certainly loomed large over the series, How I Met Your Mother became much more about the enduring friendships between five people during formative times in their lives. In the end, we wanted to know what would happen not...

Well, this sucks.
Hulu has canceled How I Met Your Father after two seasons.
The news broke Friday night, just months after the conclusion of the sophomore season.
The controversial decision means we'll be left on a cliffhanger because the show never got close to unmasking the identity of Sophie's baby daddy.
The series hinted at it with the second season's conclusion, with Sophie moving on with Jesse.
However, there were more key players in the mix, and there was the potential the show could pull the rug from under us to switch things up entirely.
How I Met Your Father picked up eight years after the events of How I Met Your Mother, taking us into a new circle of friends headlined by Hilary Duff.
The cast was rounded out by Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma.

“The. Fucking. Nanny.” That’s how Writers Guild of America West board member Liz Alper effectively summed up how members of the striking union felt about SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher’s impassioned comments Thursday afternoon when the guild formally announced plans to strike after contract talks with the studios and streamers broke down after four weeks of negotiations.
SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who joined Drescher at the podium at SAG’s Miracle Mile headquarters, said the national board “unanimously voted to issue a strike order” Thursday morning. The 160,000-member performers union will join the 11,000-plus members of the WGA on the picket lines starting Friday, marking the first dual strike in Hollywood in more than six decades.
“They’ve recognized, as writers have, that the studios have broken the business and are calling the studios to account,” one showrunner told The Hollywood Reporter following the SAG-AFTRA news conference.

When the Writers Guild strike began on May 2, it wasn’t just union members trying to anticipate what a months-long work stoppage might mean.
A number of industry and writer-adjacent organizations on both coasts had already begun discussions about the work stoppage’s potential impact in the weeks before negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ended on May 1 without a deal. With the memory of the three months it took to reach a deal during the last Hollywood writers’ strike in 2007-2008 on the mind, industry and entertainment-adjacent organizations were on alert.
The challenge, a few tell The Hollywood Reporter, wasn’t whether they’d respond, but to what needs, when and for how long alongside what the WGA was already offering its striking members.
As of last December, that was $20 million in strike funds, according to the union, with WGA West’s...

Suit up, it's time to discuss everyone's favorite self-proclaimed lady's man. The antics of Barney Stinson may not have aged particularly well here in 2022, but the "How I Met Your Mother" character somehow remains just as beloved today as he was when the show was on the air. There is one reason for that and his name is Neil Patrick Harris. This is not to say series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and their team didn't do an amazing job writing these characters, because they definitely did. However, the show's resident lothario wouldn't have been nearly as lovable if Harris hadn't imbued him with so much heart. Barney does one despicable thing after another, and yet the audience continues to root for him. Harris' performance brought so much depth to a character that could've very easily been little more than a caricature.
