Prime Video's The Rig features a star-studded cast, and it also serves as a reunion for a surprising number of stars from Game of Thrones and Line of Duty. The Rig follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo, an off-shore oil rig on the coast of Scotland. Unfortunately, the problems of deepwater oil drilling isn't even close to the biggest issue the crew has to face, as The Rig also heavily features supernatural elements. By the end of The Rig season 2, the entire fate of the world ends up hanging in the balance.
As with any show that heavily features supernatural elements, the crew of The Rig was extremely important to making those strange occurrences seem real. Once the Ancestor was revealed in The Rig, the show could have easily devolved into a pulpy sci-fi mess. Luckily, however, the show's star-studded cast held everything together and delivered a thrilling and dramatic story.

After two decades, one of Corey Feldman‘s lost roles is finally seeing the light of day.
The actor recently addressed the “million-dollar question” of why his 2004 Eugenio Mira-helmed film The Birthday is only now getting a release 20 years later, rolling out in select US theaters through October and November, and on VOD on Oct. 29.
“I have my own theories,” he told Salon. “The official answer is that the executive producer said he didn’t want to accept any offer that was not a full refund of his expenses to make it theatrical. We wanted it theatrical, but most distributors wouldn’t give money upfront, or would only give a little upfront, saving most [payment] for the backend. DVDs were fading out then, and times were changing. He held strong. We played at some festivals and got tremendous reviews. It was getting the buzz it needed, but he said, ‘No.

It only took 20 years for Corey Feldman’s critically acclaimed performance in indie horror film “The Birthday” to be seen by audiences — and the former child star turned musician is reveling in his long overdue praise.
The story of the long road to the big screen for “The Birthday” is almost stranger than fiction: While iconic filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro and Quentin Tarantino watched (and supposedly loved) director Eugenio Mira’s filmmaking debut back in 2004, the horror-comedy never was released in theaters. “The Birthday” was born at the Sitges International Film Festival in 2004, and later had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2005. And then it subsequently died. As bootleg copies circulated via DVD and later, YouTube, the lore surrounding “The Birthday” only propelled the film into cult status.

Twenty years later and Corey Feldman is back on the big screen for his iconic cult film “The Birthday.”
The feature, which counts Jason Blum and Jordan Peele among its fans, marked director Eugenio Mira’s filmmaking debut. Now, thanks to Drafthouse Films, “The Birthday” is celebrating its own b-day in a big way: with a 4K ultra high definition theatrical release, which will be its first time ever distributed in theaters.

Royal watchers the world over are hoping a Prince Harry-Prince William NYC run-in will make tabloid headlines next month.
Their reason for rooting for such a specific scenario is that both princes will be in Manhattan in late September.
As you’re probably aware, William and Harry have been estranged for quite some time now.
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Britain’s Prince William, Duke of Cambridge attend the unveiling of a statue of their mother, Princess Diana at The Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace, London on July 1, 2021, which would have been her 60th birthday. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the trouble began. But the situation certainly worsened when Harry and wife Meghan Markle decided to step down from their duties as working royals.
And it the rift deepened further with Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview.

Ship of the Damned opens with a brief prologue set on board a pirate ship in 1622. As the ship sails through a storm, the crew prepare for dinner. Which for them means rather tamely hacking a bound woman to death and eating her raw flesh. In the present, Elena has her martial arts training interrupted by a phone call from her ex, Michael. He hasn’t taken the breakup well and keeps finding reasons to call her, but this time it’s legit, even if it doesn’t sound like it.
The Coast Guard have found what appears to be a seventeenth-century sailing ship drifting off the coast and towed it into port. Since she’s an expert in such things, he’d like her to come down and be part of the investigation.

Corey Feldman’s cult classic feature is finally hitting the big screen.
Feldman stars in 2004 film “The Birthday,” directed by Eugenio Mira. The feature made its world premiere at the Sitges International Film Festival in 2004 but was essentially lost and never viewed in theaters after its initial festival circuit tour.
Now, 20 years later, “The Birthday” is getting a 4K ultra high definition theatrical release from Drafthouse Films.
“Way back in 2005, during the first-ever Fantastic Fest, we booked ‘The Birthday’ [for its U.S. premiere],” Alamo Drafthouse Founder and Fantastic Fest Director Tim League told IndieWire. “That movie and that now twenty-year relationship with director Eugenio Mira, in no small measure, crystallized the personality of the festival. Twenty years later, I am beyond thrilled to finally herald, ‘The 4K restoration is coming out this year!'”

Ruth Ashton Taylor, a pioneering TV and radio journalist who worked with Edward R. Murrow at CBS News and was a fixture on the air in Los Angeles for decades, has died. She was 101.
Taylor’s family confirmed her death to Kcal-tv Los Angeles. Taylor, who grew up in Long Beach, was the first woman to have an on-air news role in Los Angeles when she joined what was then CBS’ Kstl-tv in late 1951. At the time, she was hired to deliver a “women’s segment” for the station’s daily half-hour newscast.
Taylor bristled at the notion of covering only “women’s stories” and delivered stories produced with solid journalistic principles. Soon, she was hired to produce a similar segment for CBS’ Los Angeles news radio powerhouse Knx.

Ruth Ashton Taylor, the trailblazing journalist who was the first female TV reporter on the West Coast and an inspiration to generations of women covering serious news, has died. She was 101.
Ashton Taylor died Thursday in San Rafael, California, her daughter Laurel Conklin told The Hollywood Reporter.
After getting her start at CBS Radio alongside Edward R. Murrow in the 1940s, Ashton Taylor returned to her native Los Angeles and, in 1951, became the first woman on the West Coast to work in television news when she took a job with Knxt-tv (now Kcbs).
Ashton Taylor exited in 1958 to work as a college public information officer but came back to the station in 1962 to join a program produced by TV personality Ralph Story and to co-host The Ruth and Pat Show on the radio with comedian Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) for about a year.

Over six seasons, CBS’ “S.W.A.T.” has served up the kind of dynamic character-based action that used to be the bread-and-butter of theatrically released cop movies, eschewing the trend toward CGI and superheroes in favor of a more grounded approach that looks back to the urban action classics of Walter Hill and Richard Donner. “We really strive to do everything as real as possible,” stunt coordinator Austen Brewer told IndieWire. “There are cases where we have to lean on our VFX guys because a location won’t allow it, but if we can stage an explosion and not use CGI and it can be safely done, we will do that.”
That philosophy has served Brewer and his co-stunt coordinator Lance Gilbert well, as both of them are Emmy nominated for their work on “S.W.A.T.” For Gilbert, the striving for authenticity helps make the series not only visually dynamic but emotionally involving.

Hello, dear readers! August 10th looks to be something of a quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but one of this writer’s favorite films of 2021 is arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this week—My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To—so that makes me incredibly happy. Cult genre fans will be excited about the opportunity to add The Frenchman’s Garden and Jess Franco’s Angel of Death to their personal media collections, and if you missed it in theaters, The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2 is headed home on Blu and DVD this Tuesday as well.
Other releases for August 10th include re-releases for Friday the 13th (1980), The Haunting (1999), Disintegration, Day of the Reaper, Prison of the Psychotic Damned, and Dark Stories.

This month’s home media releases are off to a fun start as a few of my favorite movies from 2020 are headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week—Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter and Josh Ruben’s Scare Me. Beyond that, we have a pair of titles from Vinegar Syndrome that genre fans are going to want to pick up on Tuesday—Cthulhu Mansion and Dark Tower—and there are a few other titles being released on March 2nd, too, including Where is She?, Vampire Virus, and the Nicolas Cage Collection.

Icelandic production powerhouse Sagafilm and Germany’s Splendid Film are teaming on the major feature project “Operation Napoleon,” to be lensed mostly in English.
Budgeted at around €6 million ($7.2 million), the thriller is based on the eponymous best-selling novel by Iceland’s crime master Arnaldur Indriðason, whose earlier novel “Jar City” was successfully filmed by Baltasar Kormákur.
Published locally in 2009 and translated into English in 2011, “Operation Napoleon” was awarded a Crime Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association.
The story centers on a young Icelandic female lawyer who’s suddenly sucked into the vortex of an international conspiracy after being accused of a murder she didn’t commit. Her only chance of survival lies in uncovering the secret of an old German World War II airplane, recently discovered on Iceland’s largest glacier.

The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.
Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.
While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.
But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.
We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Glen has played two-fisted detective types before, having headlined Jack Taylor.
Here's the official character description (courtesy of Deadline):
“After decades of fighting crime as Batman, billionaire Bruce Wayne is just as driven to protect Gotham from evil as he was in his prime. Blood Hunger: The Films Of Jose Larraz will be available on Blu-ray March 26th From Arrow Video
One of the most underrated and oft-neglected genre filmmakers of his generation, Spanish-born director José Ramón Larraz (Symptoms) finally receives his due with this collection of his work, the first of its kind, bringing together a fascinating cross-section of films from the first half of his lengthy cinematic career.
In Larraz s debut feature, the hitherto ultra-rare Whirlpool (1970), Vivian Neves stars as Tulia, a young model invited to a photographer s secluded country home for what purports to be a quiet weekend retreat – but soon transpires to be anything but. 1974 s Vampyres – perhaps the best known and most widely-released of all José Larraz s films – sees a duo of blood hungry female vampires prowling the British countryside, from where they lure unsuspecting male motorists back to their imposing, dilapidated mansion for draining… in more ways than one.

Acorn TV launched in 30 new markets Tuesday, the biggest wave of international launches to date for the AMC-owned streaming service, which focuses on British and English-language drama.
The platform is now live in Australia and New Zealand, India, Spain, the Nordics, the Benelux countries and South Africa. The international rollout started in June, when Acorn TV launched in a plethora of markets in Latin America. More territories in that region were added as part of Tuesday’s wave.
AMC Networks has just closed a $65 million deal to buy Acorn TV parent company Rlj Entertainment, but the international rollout plans were being put into place ahead of that.
Rights deals mean that not every show from the service in the U.S. will be immediately available in every territory. Matthew Graham, Svp and Gm for Acorn TV, told Variety that the “strategy has been to start with a focused offering...

British reality format Love Island scored a peak audience of 3.4m viewers on ITV2 as the digital broadcaster cleaned up against its bigger rivals. The series, which follows a group of singletons including Danny Dyer’s daughter Dani Dyer who must couple up in a Majorcan villa, averaged 2.9m viewers across its 90-minute episode, more than double the 1.3m that tuned in to last year’s opener. Some 52% of its audience was aged between 16-34, a massive boon for the commercial broadcaster. The show helped the network beat major rivals including BBC One, which aired doc Suffragettes With Lucy Worsley in the timeslot, as well as The Queen’s Coronation In Colour on parent channel ITV, Versailles on BBC Two and C4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody. ITV bosses will hope that the increasing success of the format, a relative rarity in UK non-scripted formats, will help it sell the format into the U.

Are you a fan of television from faraway lands?
Maybe you don't even know how much you enjoy shows produced in foreign countries because it's not crossed your mind to think about it.
A lot of the shows we watch in the Us are (dare I say it?) reboots of programming that has already aired elsewhere. While we're lucky enough to get some shows (Downton Abbey, Rosehaven, The A Word, Doctor Who), many others are left across the seas.
Some very savvy people finally got wise to the fact that for every person in the Us who loved The Killing, another might have wanted to see the original. Today I'm talking about the first of three online networks that bring to you programming from around the world.

Fans of the genre should be incredibly pleased with the treatment given to this three disc collector’s edition. Let’s be clear from the outset, “Pieces” is not the best directed movie you’ll ever see. Director Juan Piquer Simón,...

Vampyros Lesbos screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (February 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)
I can’t believe after all these years I’m finally getting to see a Jess Franco movie on the big screen. This weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater, Andy at Destroy the Brain is offering up one the late Spanish director’s most noteworthy and beautiful films, Vampyros Lesbos, as part of the Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.
I first discovered the captivating allure of Jess Franco as a child when his Count Dracula (1970) and Attack Of The Robots (1966) would constantly air on the creature feature syndicate. Even as a kid, I was captivated by Franco’s hypnotic, dreamy style and I can remember being puzzled by a narcotic quality I wasn’t used to. It was when VHS tapes were introduced in the early ‘80s that I really sought out his work.

Back in 2009 we lost iconic Spanish actor Paul Naschy, who is best known for playing a handful of legendary monsters, including the Wolfman, Frankenstein's monster, Dracula and the Mummy. Five years after his death, Naschy is set to return to the screen in a film entitled Wax.
Per Bloody Disgusting, Victor Matellano's debut film will feature the voice of Naschy, which will emanate from one of the film's animatronic wax figures. The voice samples were taken from old theatrical recordings.
Jack Taylor, Geraldine Chaplin, and Jimmy Shaw also star in the film, and you can check out the teaser trailer, poster art, and a few stills below, the latter of which are loaded with tasty boobage!
Synopsis
Wax tells the story of a young journalist employed to spend a night at Barcelona’s Wax Museum, where paranormal activities are supposed to be taking place. He must record everything happening there.

Sad news from Spain. Legendary director Jesús Franco Manera, aka Jess Franco, aka Clifford Brown and a couple dozen more pseudonyms, often took from the names of the American jazz musicians he so admired, has died at the age of 82. Franco suffered a stroke last week from which he couldn’t recover.
His Erotic Rites Of Frankenstein featured a shrieking, silver-skinned Frankenstein’s monster relentlessly whipping a man and a woman tied together over a bed of spikes. It was but one of countless sublime images from the output of the most prolific Exploitation director of all-time (yes, that includes Corman). With a repertoire of over 200 titles, Franco enriched the world of Eurohorror/Exploitation by writing, directing, and scoring a vast variety of films, including masterpieces such as Female Vampire, Count Dracula, Faceless, Night Of The Bloody Judge, Eugenie De Sade, and Venus In Furs, an epic amount of art,...

“Horror of the Zombies” (1974)
Directed By: Amando de Ossorio
Written By: Amando de Ossorio
Starring: Maria Perschy (Lillian), Jack Taylor (Howard Tucker), Barbara Rey (Noemi), Carlos Lemos (Professor Gruber), Manuel de Blas (Sergio), Blanca Estrada (Kathy)
Oh the horror I experienced watching Horror of the Zombies though not as bad as I expected it to be. This movie is similar to other movies released around this time. The movie is commonly known under the name “Blind Dead.” It has also been released under the title “The Ghost Galleon” and in Spain under its original title “El buque maldito.” The other Blind Dead movies are seemingly better as this one has 1970s cheesiness woven into it. The other three movies in this set are “Tombs of the Blind Dead”, “Return of the Blind Dead”, and “Night of the Seagulls.” It was originally released in the...

Arrow Video may not be a company that we hear a lot of living in the Us, but this European distribution company has seen a steady rise to fame due to its consistent unveiling of quality products. Specializing in cult or European horror films, Arrow Video is the reason why such films as Mario Bava’s A Bay of Blood, George Romero’s Martin, and Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, have all been released on Blu-ray. Yet, these films are just a handful of the dozens of films that have seen the Blu-ray light of day. Typically you would have to own an all-region Blu-ray player to enjoy discs from across the pond. Arrow has fixed this though by releasing most of their films region free! Now the company is ready to remind you that “you don’t need to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre.” The 1982 splatter film Pieces is heading to Blu-ray.

"Agnosia," like "Julia's Eyes," which screens at the festival today, is the product of a Guillermo del Toro protege -- Eugenio Mira, whose first film, 2004's "The Birthday," caught the director/producer/force of nature's attention, if few others'. And it looks like it -- working off a screenplay by "The Devil's Backbone" writer Antonio Trashorras, Mira adeptly assembles lush, gothic visuals of the type that have become del Toro's signature. If only the film had the same amount of emotional impact. "Agnosia" is certainly the most lavishly beautiful film at Fantastic Fest, but it's structured around a story that doesn't seem to have enough to it to support a feature, either in what's at stake or in the characters.
The film starts with a group of investors arriving in the countryside to try out a new telescopic rifle, the joint product of German weapon manufacturer...
