World-renowned environmentalist David Suzuki is retiring from CBC series “The Nature of Things” after 43 years. The 86-year-old science host confirmed the news during an interview on Sunday night’s broadcast of “The National.”
“I have been fortunate to have been endowed with good health which has enabled me to remain the host of the series long after my ‘best before date’,” Suzuki said.
“Ageing is a natural biological process that creates opportunity for fresher, more imaginative input from younger people and for years, I have warned that to ensure the continuation of ‘The Nature of Things,’ we must prepare for the transition when I leave. That moment is now.”
Suzuki returns for the show’s 62nd season launch on Jan. 6, 2023, before stepping down next spring. CBC has confirmed it will announce new hosting plans in the coming weeks.

In an attempt to get teenagers and younger British Columbia citizens to stay home amid the Covid-19 pandemic, B.C. Premier John Horgan enlisted some of Hollywood’s most notable Canadians for help: Ryan Reynolds and Seth Rogen.
On Thursday Premiere Horgan posted a Twitter to his official page reaching out to the movie stars.
“I have been talking about the importance of making sure that younger demographics are hearing the message. This is a callout to Deadpool right now. Ryan we need your help up here,” Horgan says in the Twitter video. “Seth Rogen another upstanding British Columbian, we need to communicate to people who aren’t hearing us.”
While Rogen and Reynolds did not immediately respond to the Premiere’s call for aid, the two actors took to their own Twitter accounts to be of help. On Friday the Deadpool star left a “voicemail” for Horgan.

“Don’t kill my mom” is a pretty blunt statement, but it’s exactly the plea that Ryan Reynolds has made to young people who are considering partying in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. During an outbreak that poses such a high risk to the elderly, his statement holds plenty of weight, and like many others, he’s crossing his fingers that he’ll be heard.
The statement came as a response to British Columbia Premier John Horgan’s call for the Deadpool actor to speak up and entice young people to avoid partying. Reynolds – who’s also originally from Canada – had the following to say in his lengthy and humorous response:
Premier Horgan, Ryan Reynolds here, I got your message about the thing. I’m not sure it’s a great idea, frankly, I don’t think people want medical advice from guys like me. No sir,...

Environmentalist David Suzuki offers these facts about fracking, busting the myths surrounding natural gas / methane:
1. The rapid expansion of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, increases problems and adds new ones — excessive water use and contamination, earthquakes, destruction of habitat and agricultural lands and methane emissions among them. Oilsands mining, deepsea drilling and fracking are employed because easily accessible supplies are becoming increasingly scarce. The costs and consequences are even higher than with conventional sources and methods.
2. In 2015 and 2016, David Suzuki Foundation researchers joined St. Francis Xavier University’s Flux Lab under the supervision of David Risk, an expert in measurement, detection and repair of fugitive emissions. Using gas-detection instruments mounted on a “sniffer truck,” they travelled more than 8,000 kilometres in northeastern [British Columbia, Canada]. They found methane emissions from B.C.‘s Montney region alone are greater than what the provincial government has estimated for the entire industry! (Montney represents about 55 per cent of B.

In case you haven’t heard of it, Earth Overshoot Day is the day in the year when humans have used more from nature than the planet can renew within those 12 months.
“That is the definition of unsustainable,” says environmentalist David Suzuki, “and means we’re using up the biological capital that should be our children’s legacy.”
This year’s overshoot day was the earliest one yet, August 2nd. At this rate, we would need 1.7 Earths to supply our demands. Endless growth on a finite planet, whether in population, consumption or economy, cannot work. Nevertheless, growth is the prevailing business model, and the prevailing mindset is that the world revolves around human demands.
“In assuming the mantle of ‘dominant’ species,” says Suzuki, “we’ve shifted to thinking we’re at the centre of everything. This anthropocentric perspective leads us to imagine our needs and demands...

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

When filmmakers begin to work on a project they will usually have a vision of “who it is for”: their work, what section of society they want to enlighten, help and move forward on their thinking.
Then comes the overwhelmingly difficult job of making their dream vision into a completed film. This is always tough, hard work. Film is not easy.
One of the biggest problems filmmakers face is, that after spending blood, sweat, tears and years making a film, at the end of this difficult process they often have little or no idea of how to move forward and connect their film with the audience they made it for. They often fall back on the hopes of making it into this or that film festival which, in fact, is not a solution to the larger problem of distribution with specific marketing tactics. So, remember Tom Shadyac? He's the guy who was at one time a box office comedy titan, thanks to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Nutty Professor," "Liar Liar" and "Bruce Almighty." But then he decided after making millions upon millions of dollars that there was more to life and made a documentary. "I Am"was a lot of feel good, New Age-y mumbo jumbo, that found him talking with folks like David Suzuki, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Lynne McTaggart, Ray Anderson, John Francis, Coleman Barks, and Marc Ian Barasch about like the world, man. That was a couple of years ago, and while he briefly popped up as a contender to direct a remake of Arthur Lubin's 1964 film "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" that had Zach Galifianakis attached to star, it didn't happen. But now another remake might bring him back in the ring. Deadline reports that...

Too much to say, and too little time to say it, David Suzuki cheers for the global environment. Internationally reknowned author, lecturer and teacher Dr. David Suzuki has made many films. This one is his .Legacy Lecture,. the lesson that summarized his 75 years of experiences from the Ww II internment camps, through his growing up, surrounded by nature, and his final years developing his most important message. That message is that the earth is the only home we have therefore we should respect it. Suzuki hosts the CBC-tv series .The Nature of Things. that has run for some 51 seasons and, like the host, is still going strong. His past CBC radio milestones include .Quirks and Quarks. in...

Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (Fnc), which will be held from October 12 to 23, revealed to day its line-up of Canadian films. These films will be part of the Focus Québec/Canada category. The latter will be opened by the documentary Surviving Progress, by Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks, on October 13.
This documentary is based on the bestselling book A Short History of Progress, by Ronald Wright. It questions the bright side and the perils of progress through interviews with people such as David Suzuki, Margaret Atwood or even Stephen Hawking.
The film will also be accompanied by another documentary called Fortunate Son, which was directed by Montreal-based documentarist Tony Asimakopoulos. This documentary is an auto-biography about how a drug-addict almost destroyed his family.
As for feature films, the Fnc will screen some films that were at the Toronto International Film Festival. Among them is Amy George, a teen drama by Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas.

There are a couple of reasons for revisiting the Toronto International Film Festival's lineup for its documentary program, Real to Reel. One of them is Aj Schnack's interview with Thom Powers, Tiff's Documentary and Mavericks Programmer, posted just hours after the Mavericks lineup was announced on Tuesday. Discussing the highlights of both programs, they touch on another reason: Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory is making all sorts of headlines. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's third film chronicling the odyssey of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr, aka the West Memphis Three, through the labyrinth of the Us legal system, follows Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000). All three films deal with what Powers calls in his Programmer's Note "an 18-year-old murder case that has become an iconic example of a legal witch hunt." In 1993, when all three men were still teens,...

The City Dark Illuminates, Could Shine Brighter.
Austin, TX – The City Dark, recently had its world premiere in the Documentary Feature competition at this year’s SXSW film festival.
The environmental film explores the issue of light pollution, and the disappearance of starlight in the urban sprawl of industrialized nations.
Directed and narrated by filmmaker Ian Cheney (King Corn), the film follows his personal quest to answer the question, “What do we lose, when we lose the night.” By interviewing various astronomers, biologists, historians, photographers, and even boy scouts, we learn that there is quite a lot at stake in the ‘open 24/7’ culture of the world, and what better starting point for Cheney’s journey than in the city that never sleeps.
Moving from the natural beauty of Maine, to the concrete jungle of New York City, he soon discovers that his childhood fascination with observing stars becomes difficult amid...

Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie is a revolutionary documentary on the life of world renowned scientist, broadcaster and environmentalist Dr. David Suzuki. It's sure to be a powerful work with the man himself stating that it's "a distillation of my life and thoughts, my legacy, what I want to say before I die." The film showcases Suzuki's life's work, a career that aimed to make a change by compelling all to do their part to help sustain the environment. The film, however, also looks back at the now 75-year-old's life, including his traumatic experiences during World War 2 as a Japanese Canadian, and how such events shaped his character.

Film-maker who hated A-list success turns tables on industry in revealing documentary
Tom Shadyac had it all and was living the dream. Or at least that is what people in Hollywood told him. He was a hugely successful movie director with a string of comedy hits. He had earned himself millions of dollars and had an A-list lifestyle with all the trappings of excess.
Then, in 2007, an already disillusioned Shadyac had a bike accident and became gripped by a profoundly non-showbiz desire: to give his wealth away. Several years later, he has swapped his luxury jetsetting for economy class and his 17,000-square ft mansion in Los Angeles for a trailer park in Malibu.
He has not, however, stopped making films – even if his new one couldn't be more different from the goofball comedies of his big box office days. I Am, coming out in the United States next month, is...

So it seems fitting to launch our sixth awards by profiling the 20 global figures who'll exert influence in 2011. For those on our list, the coming year might best be described as "take your partners" time, as activists and corporates scramble for power – and we're predicting some unlikely marriages ahead. Luckily, I get to catch a lot of Canadian television. Seriously. One of the cooler things I get to partake of is George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. Just think "Strombo" if you aren't already familiar with the show. A "new" approach to late night, the show is more fun than the alternatives (imho), and goes a lot of places the U.S. counterparts don't. Also, cool Canadian commercials.
For the moment, I just want to give you a quick preview of tonight's show, wherein George interviews Director Peter Weir, who, in a sort of general sense, defends Mel Gibson. With one of the biggest controversies in recent memory fueling the fires against him, you don't often get to hear, "X defends Mel Gibson," so I thought it was worth a mention.
Check out a clip below, and find a way to check out this show. The episode are available internationally online a few days after air.

Check out the trailer for I Am, the upcoming 2011 documentary from Writer-Director Tom Shadyac.
I Am comes to theaters on February 8th, 2011.
About I Am:
I Am, a prismatic and probing exploration of our world, what’s wrong with it, and what we can do to make it better, represents Tom Shadyac’s first foray into non-fiction following a career as one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners, with such successful titles as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” and “Bruce Almighty” to his credit. I Am recounts what happened to the filmmaker after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged a changed man. Disillusioned with life on the A-list, he sold his house, moved to a mobile home community, and decided to start life anew. Armed with nothing but his innate curiosity and a camera crew, Shadyac embarks upon a journey to...

Last month there was an article in the L.A. Times [1] about director Tom Shadyac and his strange "spiritual awakening". The man behind such Jim Carrey blockbusters as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty had recently decided to turn his back on the Hollywood lifestyle by giving away all of his money and worldly possessions, eventually moving into a trailer park. After a cycling accident left him with post-concussion syndrome, he decided that it was time to make an honest movie about making the world a better place. When I first heard about it, it struck me that no one seemed to be taking him very seriously. Now that he has released the first trailer for his upcoming documentary I Am, I think it's clear that he is, indeed, serious about it. The movie finds Shadyac traveling the globe to talk to various well-known philosophers and philanthropists such as David Suzuki,...

I love films that are uplifting and inspiring, and Tom Shadyac's new documentary I Am gives us exactly that.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Shadyac, he is the director of several silly comedies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar, Liar, and Bruce Almighty. The director ended up getting into a terrible bike accident that changed his whole view of the world. He sold his mansion and gave away all of his possessions. He ended up moving into a trailer and started thinking about the world and how it could be changed into a better place. For those of you that want to learn more about Shadyac's experience, here's a great article from the La Times that gives a detailed description.

In the 1990s Tom Shadyac was one of the most successful directors in Hollywood. From Ace Venture: Pet Detective, to The Nutty Professor and Liar, Liar, he was making the kind of huge hit comedies studios dream of. Then Shadyac was in a bad bicycle accident that changed everything. His physical injuries healed but the experience changed his outlook on life. He sold his mansion, moved into a trailer, gave away his money and possessions and began thinking about a movie that would explore how we, as humans, can change the way we live and make the world better. That documentary, I Am, will be out in February. Check out the inspirational trailer and read the plot synopsis after the break. Here's the trailer for Shadyac's I Am. If you'd like to know about Shadyac's situation, the Los Angeles Times [1] did a great profile. That has Oscar 2012 written all over it,...

As profiled in a recent La Times article, Tom Shadyac – at one time the hottest comedy director in Hollywood, with hits like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar to his credit – had a brush with death after a serious bicycle accident, suffered from a post-concussion depressive state and gave away most of his possessions, including his 17,000 square foot mansion.

THR German Bureau Chief Scott Roxborough caught up with Unger en route to the country's leading independent film festival to talk festival hierarchy, the film business after the financial collapse and what exactly makes a film independent.

Toronto -- Canadian director Norman Jewison recalls a lunch last month at Pinewood Toronto Studios where facility boss Paul Bronfman, sitting next to Queen Elizabeth, pitched the British monarch on Pinewood Shepperton's North American beachhead.
"He not only charmed the Queen, but I think he sold her a part of the studio," Jewison said Monday night at the Toronto International Film Festival as Bronfman was inducted into the Playback Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame.
Bronfman, who started out in entertainment as rock band roadie, at Monday night's ceremony recalled a scene in the Mike Myers-starring movie "Wayne's World" where the two main characters, Wayne and Garth, get to go backstage at an Alice Cooper show by telling the rock star "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
"It's very humbling and very flattering to be recognized by your peers," he said just before accepting the industry tribute.

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. In the film Franco plays real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston who ended up trapped under a...
