Sabiha Sumar(I)
- Director
- Writer
- Producer
Sabiha Sumar was born in Karachi in 1961. She studied filmmaking and
political science at the Sarah Lawrence College, New York, and
international relations at the University of Cambridge. In 1992, she
founded Vidhi Films. Sumar has always conceived her work as a means of
social criticism, particularly to make audiences aware about the issues
of women. In this respect, we mention Who Will Cast the First Stone
(1988), focusing on the working class women's protest against Islamic
laws introduced in Pakistan in 1979, and Suicide Warriors (1996), a
documentary about guerrilla-fighting women in their struggle for a
separate homeland for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. Khamosh
Pani/Silent Waters (2003), her first feature movie, was presented and
awarded at numerous film festivals around the world.
